SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Noise Pop Festival 2025 presents Parra for Cuva
DESCRIPTION:Noise Pop Festival 2025 Presents \nParra for Cuva \nGray Area \nSan Francisco\, CA \nFebruary 21\, 2025 \nParra for Cuva \nIt’s an amusing paradox how Parra for Cuva’s new album Juno\, containing recordings of the South American ronroco\, an Indian flute player\, and the hammered dulcimer\, an ancient Persian instrument\, was almost entirely produced within the four walls of the artist’s studio in Berlin. Back in 2019\, the German musician found himself in a sort of pre-pandemic lockdown—his girlfriend was pregnant at the time\, and the couple’s activities were mostly confined to their home. Still\, Nicolas Demuth managed to fit the world into Juno—explorations with new instruments and languages\, tracks named after African animals and exotic destinations. Interestingly\, the album itself\, Juno\, borrows its name from a child that lay safe inside a womb and hadn’t yet experienced the world at all. \nThat’s the beauty of the 21st century; one barely has to leave a room to travel far and wide. Parra for Cuva’s previous\, highly acclaimed album\, Paspatou\, titled after the butler of Jules Verne’s Around The World In 80 Days\, already hinted at the musician’s worldly outlook. It also carved a unique position for Parra for Cuva as an artist who brought a truly original sound to electronic music by mixing emotional dance floor experimentations with acoustic and ethnic soundscapes. Juno takes this global interaction further with the participation of seven musicians from around the world\, many of whom Nicolas met online and worked with remotely. For the artist\, music-making isn’t about converging ideologies and worldviews; rather\, these multicultural collaborations were forged solely on the basis of a mutual love of music. \nIn his studio\, the diverse display of instruments—from bells to flutes to kalimbas and hang drums of all kinds—makes evident just how much Nicolas is an explorer of sound: “I don’t believe in spirituality in music\, but there’s definitely something when you take these traditional melodies and put them together with synths and beats—it takes you on a trip\,” he says. Juno’s aptly named opener\, Her Entrance\, which features recordings of an Indian flute player Nicolas met somewhere in the desert of Rajasthan\, indeed feels like an entryway into the world in all its different colors\, cultures\, and creeds. \nParra for Cuva has no problem mixing it all up—vocals might come in the form of Ordel’s catchy English lyrics sung by the Australian Kyson\, or by South African singer Bongeziwe Mabandla singing in his mother tongue isiXhosa in Kamara. While the former track uses gentle guitar melodies by British neo-soul guitarist Beau Diako to inspire wander\, the latter uses electronic grooves—provided by German analog synthesizer guru Moglii—to do just the same. Genre-wise\, Juno spans downtempo to house with pit stops in hip-hop and pop rhythms. It’s part of Parra for Cuva’s style to surprise listeners: “I always want to have something weird that you wouldn’t expect in my music\,” explains the musician. Manila Palm\, which starts off as the album’s more accessible and straightforward track\, suddenly reveals itself through an unpredictable chorus of heavy bassline and a James Brown–style drum set. \nSomehow\, having this many influences and styles in the album doesn’t make Juno one bit incoherent—the tracks fit and flow into one another perfectly. It’s music that’s in constant movement\, seeping slowly and carrying you along with it. Despite being based in the city of techno\, Parra for Cuva’s music stands in sharp contrast to Berlin’s distinguished hard electronica. Nicolas is making music much more akin to contemporaries such as Christian Löffler and Max Cooper\, who are unafraid of infusing their electronic productions with warm\, oftentimes melancholic\, analog sounds: “As a musician\, I see myself as more mature. My sound is calmer\, wiser\, I think\,” reflects Nicolas. \nJuno is an entrance into a world that’s multicultural and teeming with diversity\, but it’s also a serene and peaceful space. Given the year at hand\, this entry might also be seen as an escape from our current limited and at times polarized reality. Juno is a meditative and dreamy journey\, ever challenging the listener with subtle twists that interrupt the hypnotic groove. “Forget language and all of that and just listen. That’s how I want people to listen to the songs\, not thinking about it too much\,” says Parra for Cuva.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: THIRST with Franck Vigroux & Werktank
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area and Recombinant Media Labs are excited to have Franck Vigroux back with the world premiere of THIRST . \nA concert featuring pulsating live electronic music\, THIRST transcends the boundaries of traditional audiovisual performance by utilizing multi-projections of images. Drawing inspiration from the lexicon of road movies\, Americanized iconography\, and hyper-colored\, image-saturated aesthetics\, it offers a sensory journey that prompts reflections on past symbols of transgression\, picaresque adventures\, and romanticism. These symbols are now challenged by contemporary societal\, digital\, and environmental developments.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Mélanie Courtinat - The Siren (exhibition opening)
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area presents the US premiere of The Siren\, a new video game by French artist Mélanie Courtinat. \nExhibition Opening\nMélanie Courtinat: The Siren \nWednesday\, February 12\, 2025\nDoors: 6PM \nGray Area is pleased to present Mélanie Courtinat: The Siren\, a solo exhibition and the US premiere of a new video game work by French artist Mélanie Courtinat. Join us in the Gray Area Gallery on February 12 for an opening reception and guided playthrough with curator Wade Wallerstein. \nAbout The Siren \nThe Siren (2024) is an interactive experience built with Unreal Engine that questions the traditional conventions of video games. \nIn the game\, players embody a heroine wearing a shining suit of armor who wanders aimlessly along a beach at dusk. Once in control\, players explore this beautiful and austere world under the watchful eye of an omniscient narrator. The narrator prompts players to undertake the seemingly arbitrary task—or side quest—of collecting bioluminescent seashells scattered across the sand. Only by collecting all of the shells can the player advance to the main quest: rescuing a damsel in distress. \nThough rendered in ultra-high definition fidelity\, resembling the hyperrealistic outputs of mass market AAA game studio productions\, The Siren’s unique mechanics make it a distinctly different experience. The work elides a blockbuster main storyline and instead hones in on the droll imperatives and mundane taskings present in most video games. In this way\, The Siren probes the meanings we assign to actions within gamespace\, our relationships to the worlds we inhabit\, and the motivations behind our playful engagements. \nThis experience is designed to be accessible to all visitors\, including gaming newcomers\, while also providing an additional meta-level of understanding for seasoned players. \n“The Siren” is presented in San Francisco with support from Villa Albertine\, in partnership with the Albertine Foundation\, the Institut Français\, and the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. Gray Area is proud to be a 2025 French Immersion Laureate institution. \nThe Siren was originally commissioned by the Pully Art Museum as part of their exhibition “Vivre l’œuvre / Voyage aux frontières de l’art immersif contemporain”.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Gretchen Andrew: Facetune Portraits (Opening Night)
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of SF Art Week 2025\, Gray Area is pleased to announce an exhibition of newly commissioned oil paintings by Gretchen Andrew.\nOpening Night: January 23\, 4 – 8PM \nFacetune Portraits contemplates the near-ubiquitous contemporary practice of digital\, AI-enabled body modification. Weaving conceptual and practical threads from traditions in both generative art and traditional portraiture\, Gretchen Andrew creates oil paintings that examine changing perceptions of beauty in the algorithmic age. \nAlgorithmic filters—readily available on social media platforms and video communication tools—promise a more ‘appealing’ version of ourselves. Gretchen challenges this ideal by employing custom-built robotics to physically apply ‘beautifying’ algorithms on to wet oil paintings. \nFor her portraits at Gray Area\, Gretchen conducted sittings with prominent Bay Area figures. After painting each subject’s likeness by hand\, Gretchen uses her custom robotics to transform the image—applying a machinic stroke to paint algorithmic ‘beautifying’ changes to the subject’s appearance. The resulting Facetune Portraits render visible the dissonance between our natural state and the technologically-perfected image\, coexisting uncomfortably on the canvas. \nEach unique\, one-of-one painting is available for sale. Please direct all inquiries to wade@grayarea.org

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: DENTAXUVIA by Antigoni Tsagkaropoulou & Huntrezz Janos
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 10 for a live mixed reality performance experience that fractures the boundary between the virtual and the physical. \nThrough a cyber-feminist tale of dreams\, post-apocalyptic cities\, and queer love\, DENTAXUVIA follows the supernatural journey of a duo and their avatars into the quantum and vast depths of the infinite potential of the future. \nThe performance fuses the unique artistic visions of Huntrezz Janos and Antigoni Tsagkaropoulou\, utilizing technology\, sculpture\, and poetry to conjure a fragmented futuristic scene of cyberpunk insurgents. \nIn this sci-fi explosion of visuals\, the tangible meets the intangible as Huntrezz and Antigoni perform in wearable sculptures and as avatars in their virtual world. The result is an act of queer resistance that sheds their old skins and identities\, empowering them to reclaim agency in the face of oppression and igniting belief that anyone can do the same. \nThis performance is organized as an off-site activation for Janos and Tsagkaroupoulou’s solo exhibition DENTAXUVIA – Chapter 1: Corporeal Conversations—on view November 16\, 2024 – January 18\, 2025 at Telematic Media Arts in San Francisco’s SoMa District—in which the artists have transformed their theatrical performance into an interactive installation. \nThe development of DENTAXUVIA was supported by TRANSFER\, a fiscally-sponsored research & development project of Gray Area\, and Onassis ONX.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: ML Buch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive journey into the sonic world of Danish composer and producer ML Buch as she performs music from Suntub.\nSuntub is the second full length album from ML Buch\, a double record of 15 pieces by the Danish composer and producer\, entering further into the realm of electric guitars and layered vocals along with exploring new instrumental expressions.\nSince 2021\, ML Buch has released windows into Suntub in the form of Fleshless hand (2021) and Somewhere / High speed calm air tonight (2022). Suntub unfolds this world in full with its tall skies\, river mouths and singing tracks. With an offset in open tunings on a 7-string Stratocaster\, slide and fretless tablet guitars and deep-sampled virtual guitars\, the album draws up narratives and locations in a distant time. Props like puddles\, well buckets\, bone barrels and flesh rags live in these scenes\, suspended in air\, drifting about\, climbing stairs and ladders\, all given life through guitar sensibilities and visceral vocals.\nLike ML Buch’s overall practice\, Suntub is both utterly precise and intuitively fluid. Vocal and instrumental pieces counterbalance\, giving the album its own unique pace. Some motives are disjointed\, others flaring\, oddly familiar and highly personal. It holds distractions and temperament with the same intensity\, perhaps a relic of the artist’s deep engagement with the record\, which was initiated five years ago and has since then been written\, recorded\, produced and mixed by ML Buch herself.\nGet tickets: https://grayarea.org/event/ml-buch/

SUMMARY:Gray Area: Breadboarding Modular Synthesizers
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, you will learn how to design basic electronic oscillators with integrated circuits and discrete components. These principals will allow us to synthesize musical sounds from the ground up and arrange them into melodic and rhythmic patterns. \nOver the course of two days\, we will focus on two circuit typologies: square wave oscillators for synthesizing pitched instruments and sine wave oscillators for emulating percussive sounds. After learning how to build these circuits out on breadboards\, we’ll explore two ways of interacting with our circuits – one a button-based system for actuating sounds\, and another an automated circuit for sequencing them. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have built your own unique\, playable instrument capable of generating synth melodies and sequencing drum patterns in real-time. \nNo previous experience is necessary and all materials are provided for you in this workshop.\nCourse Logistics \nDates: Saturday November 23 & Sunday November 24\, 2024 \nTimes: 1-4PM PT \nLocation: Gray Area / Grand Theater\n2665 Mission St\, San Francisco\, CA 94110 \nCost: $250 \nScholarship: We also offer Diversity Scholarships.\nApply by November 9\, 2024. \nExperience Level: Beginner \nRequirements:\n• No additional tools required \nAdditional Information:\n• No refunds or exchanges\n• View our FAQ here\n• Contact info@grayarea.org with any questions\nWorkshop Outline \nDay 1 \n Build out a basic square wave oscillator + amplifier\n Build out a basic twin-T sine wave oscillator\n Troubleshooting and Q&A with an explanation of both circuits \nDay 2 \n Using buttons and switches as an interface\n Build out sequencer with binary counter + multiplexer\n Circuit variations and discussion of further possibilities

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: StoryScroll: Share your Life Story with AI Tools
DESCRIPTION:Sharing personal stories is a powerful way to express your perspective\, celebrate differences\, and uncover shared values. Across cultures\, gathering around a table for a meal often creates a warm\, trusting environment for storytelling. Inspired by the many dinners shared in lead artist Cheng Xu’s kitchen\, we’ve developed a virtual dinner host designed to encourage the exchange of life stories. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll be guided by StoryScroll (formerly Dragon Delusion)\, a custom AI tool that helps you visually tell your story. Acting as a virtual dinner host\, StoryScroll will guide you step by step to discover your story\, add details\, and bring it to life through visuals. We will also take a behind-the-scenes look at the popular AI tools that contributed to StoryScroll‘s creation. \nWhether you’re seeking self-discovery\, healing\, or simply a meaningful exchange\, this introspective journey offers something for everyone. \nThis workshop is offered through the BAVC Media VERSED program. VERSED is a series of hybrid workshops\, hands-on labs\, virtual and in-person trainings for media makers to skill up\, spark and sustain careers in the media arts on a free or below-market basis. This program is made possible by a generous donation from the National Endowment for the Arts.\nDates: Tuesday November 19 & Thursday November 21\, 2024\nTimes: 6:30PM – 8:00PM PT\nEnroll today: https://grayarea.org/course/storyscroll-share-your-life-story-with-ai-tools/

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: An Evening of Films by La Pocha Nostra
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of experimental films by artist collective La Pocha Nostra opened with a short introduction by Guillermo Gómez-Peña.\nOver the course of the pandemic\, interdisciplinary performance collective La Pocha Nostra got to work developing a collaborative filmmaking format\, drawing directly from our own performance methodology and responding to the immediate artistic constraints posed by the multiple pandemias and prevailing culture of fear. The process of making our performance films is de-centered\, experimental\, and collaborative\, defying traditional filmmaking practice – moviemaking against all odds and by any means necessary.\nThis special screening features a selection of experimental films completed during the past 4 years.\nGet tickets: https://grayarea.org/event/old-school-video-art-against-nostalgia-films-guillermo-gomez-pena-gustavo-vazquez/

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Xiu Xiu: 13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting performance of 13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips\, the newest record by experimental rock band Xiu Xiu.\nWith 13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips\, Xiu Xiu strove to create a record that felt unafraid\, pushing boundaries not only for the audience but the band itself. Mixed by John Congleton\, the nine-track album explores themes of existential despair\, disorientation\, and the struggle for significance. Despite its intense subject matter\, this record genuinely cares for its audience and is imbued with purpose. Ultimately\, it transcends the randomness of life and connects with its listeners on a profound\, authentic level.\nGet tickets: https://grayarea.org/event/xiu-xiu-13-frank-beltrame-italian-stiletto-with-bison-horn-grips/

SUMMARY:Gray Area: Cybernetic Countercultures Intensive
DESCRIPTION:What if there were a road less taken in the history of cybernetics — one with profound implications for how we understand technology today? \nAlongside the well-known cybernetics of command and control\, of informatics and machine intelligence\, in the 1960s and 1970s a more organic cybernetic mode also arose\, an ecological line of inquiry that foregrounded the complex internal and interactive behaviors of living systems. \nA 12-week online course led by Dr. Bruno Clarke and Dr. David McConville of Gaian Systems\, and co-produced by Gray Area\, the Cybernetic Countercultures Intensive will take this alternative ecological route through the larger history of cybernetics. Our aim is to recover and revive the organic and ecological lines of systems thinking and then to venture toward new ways of conceiving and building advanced technological systems — from machines that work in symbiosis with living processes to adaptive architectures and regenerative infrastructures. Join us on a voyage of rediscovery seeking not to imitate life but to integrate the technosphere with the biosphere\, to design a technological paradigm grounded in the sensitivity and sentience of the living world.
