SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Visible Cloaks: Paradessence
DESCRIPTION:Paradessence\, Visible Cloaks’ third full-length\, is a work of emergence and illusion. The album’s fourteen songs shift\, heave\, and shimmer against a faintly luminous backdrop of night\, a cavernous space shaped by sparse hyperreal representations of the natural world. The arrangements are simultaneously grandiose and fragile\, both an inversion and culmination of what came before and as adventurous as anything they’ve produced so far. \nOpening the evening is San Francisco Bay Area based composer and performer Madalyn Merkey\, whose recent work observes the principles of acoustic instruments and material spaces to design real-time soundsynthesis programs for site-specific performances.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Immersive Story Club
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area presents Immersive Story Club: a new events series highlighting excellence and diversity in virtual reality narrative experiences from around the world. \nLed by Gray Area Cultural Incubator member Danielle Giroux\, this recurring gathering will feature a different short form VR film in each session. \nFollowing each screening\, the Immersive Story Club will follow an experimental and fluid format: each session aiming to uncover meaningful ways of moving from virtual immersion into discussion and craft rooted in physical world connection and camaraderie. Immersive Story Club is a work in progress\, currently incubating at Gray Area\, and will be conducted in an open format that welcomes participant suggestions. \nEach VR experience presented has travelled around the world to film festivals\, museums and other venues. Now\, many of these creative gems sit hidden on hard drives somewhere while the technology slowly becomes obsolete. As a participant in Immersive Story Club\, you will have the opportunity to view rarely accessed artworks that are notoriously resistant to conservation. Through Giroux’s selection of films\, the group will explore topics like censorship\, shared memory\, personal identity\, nostalgia\, and shifting social perspectives. \nCome ask WHY VR with us. Join in for a virtual story and stick around for conversation\, collaging\, and more! \nThere will be tea.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Waves of Change: A Night of Vocals + Electronics- San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Voices of Silicon Valley (VOSV) is pleased to perform contemporary vocal music mixed with electronics! This is a rare opportunity to witness and explore the relationship between choral-like singing and music production– electronic instruments\, software programs\, and live mixing. \nCome hear the Bay area’s leading electronic music artist Kris Grant in combination with VOSV’s director\, Cyril Deaconoff\, setting of “La rosa de Mexico”\, based upon poet Xavier Villaurrutia’s “Nocturna rosa”. We’ll also explore the page of words unread in composer Alexander Frank’s newest choral work “Lorem Ipsum”\, as well as revisit Peter Shin’s “Bits Torn from Words::VI. If __________ did happen\, how bad would it be?” \nWe’re excited to introduce talented young artist Nathan Zabaleta’s work\, Dream\, in combination with electronics by Kris Grant. Dream is a choral piece inspired by Georgian singing. Come witness these amazing premieres at the San Francisco performance! \nProgram: \n Kris Grant: They are Out to Get you\n Cyril Deaconoff: La Rosa de Mexico\n Alexander Frank: Loren Impsum\n Nathan Zavaleta: Dream

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: After Thought
DESCRIPTION:After Thought is a concert that occurs slightly after it has already happened\, where the memories of computers and humans blur into something you won’t quite be able to forget (or fully remember). What exactly does a memory disk remember\, and what does it choose to leave behind? Ten composers interviewed the transistors\, microchips\, and hidden circuitry inside of our electronic devices to ask them about their childhood memories. What is a microchip’s favorite song? What happens when a transistor undergoes a transistential crisis? \nThis concert features works by ten Stanford composers– Anna Golubkova\, Brian Brown\, Calvin Van Zytveld\, Lemon Guo\, Nicholas Shaheed\, Mercedes Montemayor\, Walker Smith\, Mohammad H. Javaheri\, Héloïse Garry\, Kimia Koochakzadeh-Yazdi– with wide-ranging composition and performance practices spanning electronic and acoustic music\, audiovisual compositions and installations\, live coding\, custom-built instruments\, field recordings\, film\, dance and more!

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Cybersentics Book Club May 2026: Ars vs. Techne - A False Dichotomy?
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on lectures Lewis Mumford delivered at Columbia University in 1952\, “Art and Technics” maps a tension between two seemingly disparate ways of navigating the world — one oriented toward efficiency\, the other toward meaning — and argues that modern society’s fixation on technics has deprived daily life of symbolic concerns. \nThis divide is rather visible in the Bay Area\, where the worlds of aspiring tech entrepreneurs and embattled humanists exist in parallel\, with strikingly little overlap in values and an ever-widening gap in socioeconomic power. With Mumford as a guide\, we will also consider AI and surveillance systems as technologies increasingly deployed not as tools of knowledge\, but of control.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Breadboarding Modular Synthesizers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on DIY Breadboarding Modular Synthesizers Workshop\, you’ll learn how to design your own modular synthesizer from scratch. Using basic electronic oscillators\, integrated circuits\, and discrete components\, you’ll explore the fundamental principles of sound synthesis. We’ll create and arrange melodic and rhythmic patterns\, building musical sounds from the ground up. \nOver the course of two days\, we will focus on two circuit typologies: square wave oscillators for synthesizing pitched instruments and sine wave oscillators for emulating percussive sounds. After learning how to build these circuits out on breadboards\, we’ll explore two ways of interacting with our circuits – one a button-based system for actuating sounds\, and another an automated circuit for sequencing them. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have built your own unique\, playable instrument capable of generating synth melodies and sequencing drum patterns in real-time.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Good Modeling Picture!! Curated by Molly Soda
DESCRIPTION:Gray Area presents a special night of artist-made films\, selected by internet artist performer Molly Soda. Soda will be present to introduce the films\, and afterwards will participate in a Q&A moderated by Gray Area Associate Curator Wade Wallerstein. \nBringing together a diverse group of artists\, Good Modeling Picture!! offers a variety of perspectives on digital culture over the last 25 years. More specifically\, the selected films explore fame and fandom\, self and other\, and the power dynamics of perception in screen-mediated spaces. Livestream gifting culture\, online encounters with strangers\, and digital photography from Y2K-era party circuits are just a few of the techno-social phenomena through which these films offer insight into modern identity formation and self-perception.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: William Basinski with Kelly Moran
DESCRIPTION:On April 30\, William Basinski brings his signature approach to experimental music to Gray Area. A classically trained composer who has worked in experimental media for over 30 years\, from New York City to California\, Basinski uses obsolete technology and analog tape loops to shape haunting\, slow-moving soundscapes that linger on memory\, impermanence\, and the passage of time.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Tidal Transmissions: Navigation CROSSLUCID with Sayaka Botanic
DESCRIPTION:Tidal Transmissions: Navigation is a live audiovisual work by CROSSLUCID\, centered on T I D E (Tidal Intelligence Data Engine) — a self-evolving ecosystem of AI entities that process real-time oceanic data and adapt how they communicate in response to changing conditions. \nDrawing on Indigenous Pacific navigation practices\, particularly Marshallese stick charts that map wave interference patterns\, the work reimagines orientation not as a fixed position\, but as a dynamic relationship between forces. In this framework\, signals emerge from apparent noise\, and cognition is distributed rather than contained. \nFeaturing a live performance by experimental violinist Sayaka Botanic\, who instrumentalizes her body as the substrate of oceanic data\, her bow tracing the logic of Pacific stick charts through sound\, enacting an embodied wayfinding between ancient piloting traditions and tidal data streams. \nFollowing the performance\, Claire Isabel Webb joins Sylwana Zybura and Tomas C. Toth from CROSSLUCID and Sayaka Botanic for a panel discussion. \nThis event is presented by Future Humans\, a research initiative housed in the Berggruen Institute that examines how ideas of life\, intelligence\, and consciousness are being reshaped in the twenty-first century.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: SF Cinematheque presents: Constructions / Destructions / Instructions: The Films of Gordon Matta-Clark
DESCRIPTION:SF Cinematheque presents six films by Gordon Matta-Clark from 1971–1976\, showcasing his radical “building cuts” and experimental interventions that use film to explore boundaries and space. \nProgram introduced by Dylan Adamson & Jessamyn Fiore \nGordon Matta-Clark\, the artist\, urban explorer and “anarchitect” most famous for the “building cuts” he performed on various decomposing structures in the 1970s\, made eighteen short films before his untimely death from cancer in 1978. Aside from enabling “walk throughs” of the buildings Matta-Clark worked with (all of which have since been demolished)\, film provides the ideal venue with which to experience Matta-Clark’s singular artistry: the power of the cut to create strange new juxtapositions\, the epistemological faculty of an opening that introduces light to new planes; metaphorical connections between Matta-Clark’s work and the cinematic apparatus abound. This program collects six of his films completed between 1971 and 1976\, documenting three building cuts\, one site-specific intervention\, one formal experiment and one car crash. In all his work\, Matta-Clark sought to expose the thinness of the boundaries that divide people\, mediums\, spaces and ideas. With sledgehammer\, chainsaw and his own two feet\, he punched through these walls with an urgency that has been increasingly felt in the decades since his passing\, cutting new holes for light to pour in. (Dylan Adamson & Jessamyn Fiore\, program curators) Full screening details here.\nScreening \nFire Child (1971) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 10 minutes.\nFresh Kill (1972) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 13 minutes.\nBingo/Ninths (1974) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 10 minutes.\nSplitting (1974) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 11 minutes.\nConical Intersect (1975) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 19 minutes.\nCity Slivers (1976) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 15 minutes.\nTRT: 78 minutes. \nRelated publication: City Slivers And Fresh Kills: The Films Of Gordon Matta-Clark (Steven Jenkins\, ed)\, published 2004 by San Francisco Cinematheque.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: OOIOO with Lightning Bolt
DESCRIPTION:For the first time since 2015\, Japanese art rock quartet OOIOO\, led by YoshimiO (Boredoms\, myriad other projects) since 1996 as a vehicle for experimental\, fluid and evolving “rock” group compositions comes to the USA for a brief tour anchored around the inaugural Open Melody Festival in Los Angeles. 8 albums into their career\, OOIOO never stay sonically stymied with each record its own little world overflowing with playful\, wildly inventive songwriting\, sounds\, and textures. \nThey are joined by equally-legendary Providence\, RI sonic warriors Lightning Bolt in their first Bay Area appearance since 2022. For over 30 years\, the duo of Brian Gibson (bass) and Brian Chippendale (drums/vocals) have toured the world delivering their often-imitated\, never-replicated onslaught of frenetic drum ‘n’ bass\, heavy as a ton of bricks but always awash in chirping\, clamoring melodies and hooks. \nAn extremely special and rare co-headline performance to celebrate their new split LP “The Horizon Spirals/The Horizon Viral\,” out 4/24/2026 on Thrill Jockey. \nGumby’s Junk\, Oakland’s finest herky-jerky prog-pop shredders\, opens this mind-expanding\, ear-crushing evening.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Ruaridh Law 'Triadic Paths' solo exhibition
DESCRIPTION:For version 3.0 of the Algorithmic Art Assembly\, Gray Area is pleased to host a solo exhibition of work by Scottish-born artist Ruaridh Law\, curated by Thorsten Sideboard. \nTriadic Paths is a collection of three works Law’s oeuvre\, each tripartite in some way. Having previously exhibited outdoors\, in clubs\, in group gallery shows and more unusual locations\, this marks the first time that a collection of his works have been brought together inside. Each has a deep connection to memory\, the psyche and the intangibility of thought. \nI Like To Remember Things My Own Way was originally conceived as a live performance piece\, looping clips from David Lynch’s Lost Highway over and over again until they degrade and corrupt. This then evolved into a narrative film (screened here) for Repeater Books in 2022\, with the voice of Luke Hansbury charting a spiral of lost memory and decaying cognition – an abstract horror\, with neurological failure as the villain\, split into three sections. \nBare Windows\, Many Shades has previously been exhibited in clubs as well as gallery spaces. Three tripod mounted screens display heavily processed footage of clubs that had a profound impact on the artist. Locking the viewer in via headphones and small screen\, the nostalgia and often inaccurate memories become shared\, with hazy\, reverb-drenched reimaginings of the music filling the ears. \nAnd lastly 44: A Tarot For Sietse Van Erve presents a custom made tarot deck and control interface to explore the image\, sound and narrative in the cards. Having been performed outside in the Forest Of Galloway as a participatory piece\, and used in several performances as a live instrument\, this iteration brings it into the gallery space as a standalone installation\, allowing the participants to deal their own cards and create audio and visual stimulus over the three cards.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Cybersentics Book Club - March 2026: The Medium Is Still the Message
DESCRIPTION:Join us this March at Gray Area’s Cybernetics Book Club. \nMarshall McLuhan was by no means a prophet\, but he was certainly a pioneer in the study of the ways electric media transform society. How are people changed by the instruments they employ? What do media do to the people who use them? These are the core questions that provide a framework for evaluating our current state of culture at large. \nTaking up a recent book by Grant Havers on McLuhan for our book club session\, we will attempt to synthesize previously explored concepts of biological feedback\, external conditioning (“mind control”)\, cognitive liberty\, and brain media with the theory of the transformation of society\, applying them to thinking about the digital age. Viewing technology not as an antithesis to nature but as a second nature\, we will focus on a few questions: \n– How innovation leads to organized ignorance (McLuhan)\, or\, in other words\, how new devices leave those without access or knowledge behind; \n– When the crisis of literacy began (in the US)\, and whether reading books remains relevant amid the technology-driven shift to post-literacy; \n– Why (if at all) digital media and ubiquitous large language models impede our capacity to think freely.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: The Stack Decade (Told You So) Lecture by Benjamin Bratton
DESCRIPTION:In 2016 MIT Press published The Stack: On Software and Sovereignty\, a book that clearly mapped the emergence of planetary computation and imagined the next decade with rigor\, humor and precision. It established a new kind of philosophy of technology\, integrating computer science\, design\, and cultural theory into a deeply influential new synthesis. \nFrom chip wars to culture wars\, from Carl Schmitt to cybernetics\, from platforms becoming state-scale actors to states evolving into cloud platforms\, from cities as software substrates to interfaces as models of reality\, from addressable and tokenizable everything to the cohabitation of human and non-human users\, the book showed how all these dizzying transformations actually add up to a new totality: an accidental megastructure we call The Stack. \nJoin author\, Benjamin Bratton\, Director of Antikythera\, for an exclusive public lecture and book signing to celebrate the 10th anniversary paperback edition of the book. He will revisit the six layers of The Stack—Earth\, Cloud\, City\, Address\, Interface and User—and will provide a glimpse into the next decade of their development. Marek Poliks\, co-author of Exocapitalism\, will introduce the author and host a Q&A.
