SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Growing a Garden: Where to Start Workshops 2026
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a space that you would like to turn into a garden\, but don’t know where to start? This class is perfect for beginner gardeners or anyone looking for a refresher. We will guide you through the steps to transform your yard into a beautiful garden\, including maintenance tips and where to find support and resources. We will also include information and advice on container gardening. This workshop will focus on working with nature\, observing your space\, and demystifying San Francisco’s unique microclimate. With your newfound knowledge\, you’ll be able to create a manageable garden that aligns with the space you have. Bring your questions! \nPlease note that this workshop focuses on perennial plant gardening\, NOT edible food growing. If you are interested in learning about edible plant growing\, please register for one of our Grow Your Own Food 2026 workshops. \nOur expert instructor Carey Craddock is a garden coach\, consultant\, and horticultural enthusiast. She has been teaching at Garden for the Environment since 1998\, first as a Get Up! intern\, and then as a staff member until 2003. She trained in both CCSF and Merritt College’s landscape horticulture programs\, and loves to combine her passion for art and horticulture into creative projects. She runs Carey Craddock Gardens where she specializes in ecological garden design and growing food. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

DESCRIPTION:Learn the fundamentals of successfully growing food in your backyard in this engaging series taught by local gardening experts! \nDig In! — GFE’s Six-Part Edible Gardening Series \nSaturdays from 10am – 12pm on April 4th\, 11th\, 18th\, 25th\, and May 2nd and 9th. One registration enrolls you in all six sessions! \nDo you want to get your hands dirty? Learn how to garden this spring! \nThis six-part workshop series is designed to teach you everything you need to start growing food in your backyard in a supportive\, hands-on environment. \nSan Francisco provides a perfect climate for growing food year-round! Even a small backyard space can be enough to grow healthy vegetables. In this workshop series\, you will learn about the types of beds and containers in which to grow your plants and how to build healthy soil\, build a simple irrigation system\, plant and care for veggies\, and harvest your crops. \nAll materials and tools will be provided for the workshops at GFE. Please bring gardening gloves if you own them. \nPlease note that all refund requests need to be made at least three days before the first session on April 4th. \nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE \nPart I: Site Assessment– April 4th. Instructor: TBA \nLearn about the reasons you may want to grow your own food and choose how and where you want to plant. We’ll walk you through a site assessment exercise and cover different ways to grow crops\, from in-ground to raised beds and containers\, helping you choose what is appropriate for your space. \nPart II: Growing Healthy Soil — April 11th. Instructor: Emillie Winfield \nLearn about soil types and how to create and maintain healthy soil for vegetable growing\, and then add and amend soil in a GFE raised vegetable bed. \nPart III: DIY Drip Irrigation — April 18th. Instructor: Ellyn Shea \nLearn about basic home drip irrigation systems\, how to put drip irrigation parts together with hands-on practice\, and see an assortment of irrigation configurations in use at GFE. \nPart IV: Planting Calendars & Crop Rotation — April 25th. Instructor: Ellyn Shea \nLearn about what vegetables you can grow at each time of year and how to alternate crops to prevent disease and keep your soil healthy\, then make a planting plan for a GFE vegetable bed. \nPart V: Planting Your Edible Garden — May 2nd. Instructor: TBA \nLearn tips and techniques for planting seeds and seedlings and then practice by planting out some GFE veggie beds. \nPart VI: Care & Harvest of Your Backyard Garden –May 9th . Instructor: Carey Craddock \nLearn how to maintain your veggie plants as they grow\, keep them healthy and free of pests\, and when and how to harvest different types of vegetables. We will celebrate the end of the course by harvesting from the GFE veggie beds so you can test San Francisco-grown produce!

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Urban Chickens
DESCRIPTION:Did you know you can raise chickens in cities? You can! \nWhen you raise urban chickens\, you can increase your garden’s health and produce even more of your own food. In this workshop\, we’ll walk you through the steps to setting up your flock\, review different coop designs\, and provide an overview of chicken husbandry so you can keep your birds healthy. You also get to meet our expert instructors’ very own backyard chickens! \nInstructors Jamie & Blas are natives of San Francisco. They tend a small homestead in San Francisco with their two girls\, complete with honey bees\, chickens\, greenhouse\, mini orchard and vegetables. Blas has a degree in environmental studies\, a certificate in sustainable design from the Urban Permaculture Institute of San Francisco and currently is teaching high school science in the Jefferson Union School District. Jamie has an MS in science and a doctorate in educational leadership from SF State University. She is a certified UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and currently Executive Director of Planet Bee Foundation. In their free time you can find them volunteering at their local community greenspace Sisterhood Gardens and running their garden education company @FogCityGardener. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

DESCRIPTION:In this engaging workshop\, learn about how to grow your own edible plants year-round in San Francisco’s mild climate. \nIn this in-person workshop\, learn to take full advantage of the unique gardening climate in San Francisco\, where you can grow your own fruits and vegetables year-round! Join us throughout the seasons for our Grow Your Own Food workshop. \nSome topics that will be covered in the months the workshop is offered: \n    January: Soil fertility\, weed management\, and what to plant now.\n    March: Growing your own transplants\, what seeds to start indoors and outdoors\, and successful transplanting of seedlings.\n    May: Warm weather crops and plants that attract beneficial insects and watering needs of your spring garden.\n    July: Planning for your winter garden and summer pests and diseases to look out for.\n    September: Preparing your garden for the cool and rainy season and harvesting the fruits of your summer garden.\n    November: Taking advantage of the rainy season by planting cold hardy crops such as garlic\, peas\, and edible perennials. \nOur expert instructor Carey Craddock is a garden coach\, consultant\, and horticultural enthusiast.
