SUMMARY:Community Music Center: Renegade Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The Renegade Orchestra is the bay area’s most rock and roll symphony. Is it a rock band? Is it an orchestra? Who knows? But it’s definitely the best of both worlds. The pure unbridled fury of some of the bay area’s top orchestra players unleashed on classic rock songs backed up by a hard-hitting rhythm section. \nFor the 2025 – 2026 season\, the Renegade Orchestra will present a revolving set of music all based on the sounds of San Francisco…and the Bay Area\, featuring pieces written by famous Bay Area rock bands or even just recorded in the Bay Area. These are classic tunes reimagined like Jefferson Airplane’s Somebody to Love\, It’s a Beautiful Day’s White Bird\, and even some orchestral punk by the Dead Kennedys. \nAt this show\, the Renegade Orchestra will present a comfortable\, but lively show featuring around 15 musicians\, all committed to having a relaxed and rocking time. If there is something you hate about orchestra concerts\, this is the opposite. \nTickets: $25 in advance\, $30 at the door. Purchase tickets here or available at the door.\nAlways chairs provided.\nDoors open at 6:30 pm \nAbout the Renegade Orchestra: \nRenegade Orchestra – The Beauty of a Symphony\, the Soul of a Rock Band\nWelcome to the Renegade Orchestra – it’s time to throw out all the old conventions of a quiet\, sleepy\, stuffy show of musicians locked in straight jackets of tradition. \nClap your hands\, tap your feet\, and yell all you want – the Renegade Orchestra embraces the virtuosic skills of top bay area musicians and turns them loose on songs orchestras have never or maybe shouldn’t do. No sleepy pop songs\, no overly-lush jazz standards\, but the pure unbridled fury of what an orchestra can truly do. \n“Classical Rebels.” The Bohemian \n“The Renegade Orchestra would rather tackle Hendrix than Handel.” Mercury News\n“If there’s one piece of advice I would give to anyone interested in seeing this group perform\, it would be to expect the unexpected\, or better yet\, leave your expectations at the door and go in prepared for a ride. If there’s one thing that’s for certain\, it’s that this writer will be catching them again the next time they perform in town.” Napa Valley Register \n“…Under the baton of co-founder\, guitarist and conductor Jason Eckl\, [the Renegade Orchestra] turn Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman” into a shimmering string-centric odyssey\, capture the classic helter-skelter vibe in Paul McCartney’s and John Lennon’s “Helter Skelter\,” find the funk in “What’d I Say” by Ray Charles and crash with vibratory verve through Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze.” East Bay Express

SUMMARY:Community Music Center: Sylvan Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Sylvan Trio–a chamber ensemble of Michelle Chang\, soprano\, Tom Reicher\, horn\, and David Neuman\, piano—is dedicated to the exploration and performance of songs\, principally “art songs\,” that were composed or arranged for this unique combination. A simple definition of an “art song” is that it is a poem set to music\, and it may be distinguished from songs in general because typically the words of the poem are at least the equal of the music of the composer. It has been said that the composer’s task in an art song is to give the poem a “heightened existence” through not only the song’s melody but also through the accompaniment of the piano and\, in the case of the Trio\, the horn. \nThe Sylvan Trio takes its name from the forest associations of the horn. Called “Waldhorn” (“forest horn”) in German\, the horn traditionally has been the voice of the hunt\, of the forest\, of the mountains\, and\, more broadly\, of rural life. A number of the songs in the Trio’s repertoire exploit these associations. \n$20 suggested donation

SUMMARY:Community Music Center: David James’s GPS Album Release - Mission Rebel No. 1: Looking for Rev. Jesse James
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of the release of the recording by David James’s GPS of “Mission Rebel No. 1: Looking for Rev. Jesse James”\, composed by David James. \nThe culmination of a years-long project of research and composition\, the release of “Mission Rebel No. 1” is an occasion worth celebrating. And what better way than by performing the music – a suite that musically examines the life of a Mission District activist\, Rev. Jesse James – in the Concert Hall of the Mission’s own Community Music Center. \n“Mission Rebel No. 1: Looking for Rev. Jesse James” is the newest album from San Francisco composer\, guitarist and singer David James and his ensemble GPS. Part song-cycle\, part personal history\, the suite of compositions is a kaleidoscopic tour through a half-century of Black musical forms. This highly-anticipated recording is James’ musical examination of the life of his father\, a preacher and activist in San Francisco in the 1960s and 70s. Augmenting his long-running sextet with vocalists\, James draws inspiration from music contemporaneous with the life of Rev. Jesse James\, combining elements of early jazz\, 1960’s and ‘70s soul\, Afrobeat and more. \n“Mission Rebel No. 1: Looking for Rev. Jesse James” is the tenth release in a series of 12 recordings featuring SF Bay Area creative composers and musicians\, released from February 2025 through February 2026 by bassist Lisa Mezzacappa’s micro label Queen Bee Records. \nDavid James’s GPS is a rhythm-horns-and-strings sextet led by composer-guitarist David James (Afrofunk Experience\, the Coup\, Spearhead)\, and includes Beth Custer (Club Foot Orchestra) on clarinets\, Alan Williams (Afrolicious\, Big Star Third) on trombone\, Keith Lawrence (Cosa Nostra Strings) on viola\, Lisa Mezzacappa (Fred Frith\, Jordan Glenn\, The Electronic Lover) on bass\, and John Hanes (Chrome\, Actual Trio\, Henry Kaiser) on drums. Here\, the sextet is joined by mezzo-soprano Allegra Bandy and tenor Sòlás Burke-Lalgee. \nwww.heydavidjames.com \nTickets: $5–$50 donation.
