SUMMARY:Brava Theater: The John Santos Sextet & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Brava Theater is proud to present an electrifying night of Afro-Caribbean music with The John Santos Sextet & Friends on Friday\, May 2\, 2025\, at 8:00 PM. This special concert brings together an all-star lineup led by seven-time Grammy-nominated percussionist\, Mission district native and cultural historian John Santos\, whose artistry and deep-rooted knowledge of Latin music have made him a cornerstone of the Bay Area’s vibrant scene. \nJoining Santos on stage will be his powerhouse ensemble—Dr. John Calloway\, Marco Díaz\, David Flores\, Charlie Gurke\, Saul Sierra\, and John Santos—along with an extraordinary roster of special guests: Orestes Vilató\, Anthony Blea\, Destani Wolf\, Rico Pabón\, Christelle Durandy\, Pedro Pastrana\, Javier Navarrette\, Juan Luis Pérez\, and Marcel Joao Santos. \nKnown for their masterful blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms\, jazz\, and improvisation\, The John Santos Sextet delivers music that is both deeply rooted in tradition and refreshingly innovative. This one-night-only performance will be a celebration of Latin jazz\, Cuban rumba and son\, Puerto Rican bomba and plena\, and the rich rhythmic tapestry that connects the African diaspora. \nAbout their new album\, John Santos writes “As we continue to celebrate over 40 years of independent\, Bay Area record production with Machete Records\, Horizontes (Horizons) is our newest musical reaffirmation in the power of love to transform the violence of bigotry\, slavery\, colonialism\, berzerk capitalism and war into the as of yet unrealized unity and brotherhood of the human race. Dedicated to\, and inspired by all the world’s children.”

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: SFDFF: Last Dance at the Sundance Stompede
DESCRIPTION:SF Dance Film Festival: Last Dance at the Sundance Stompede \nWe’re proud to partner with the San Francisco Dance Film Festival and co-present the world premiere of “Last Dance at the Sundance Stompede”. This heartfelt documentary film explores community\, resilience\, and joy through the lens of queer country-western dancing at an iconic San Francisco gathering: the Sundance Stompede. Saddle up for a jubilant evening featuring live performances\, a Q&A\, and even an opportunity to dance yourself! \nPurchase Tickets https://www.eventbrite.com/e/last-dance-at-the-sundance-stompede-screening-tickets-1266456257759 \nABOUT THE FILM\nIn November 2023\, over 800 people from around the globe gathered in San Francisco for the final Sundance Stompede\, an LGBTQ+ country-western dance weekend that had been a cornerstone of queer culture for 27 years. What began in the early 1990s as a small grassroots fundraiser for AIDS blossomed into a cherished annual community gathering. Over the years\, the Sundance Stompede became a haven where queer individuals from diverse backgrounds united through their shared love of country-western dance and challenged the dance style’s traditional gender norms.\nThe final Sundance Stompede marked the end of a remarkable era. Last Dance at the Sundance Stompede captures its historic weekend\, chronicling the reflections of founder Ingu Yun and 15 participants as they celebrate the event’s enduring legacy and bid farewell with one last dance. More than a swan song of a beloved event\, this tender and intimate documentary is a tribute to a community that used dance as a powerful vehicle for survival\, celebration\, and change for nearly three decades.

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Indómitas: Live Podcast with guest Diana Lara
DESCRIPTION:Indómitas is a live monthly podcast series hosted by Chelis López of KPOO and Radio Bilingüe\, featuring untamable voices of fierce women artists and activists. For the February 2025 podcast\, Indómitas will interview Lucia Agudelo\, a gender equity\, healthcare and immigrant rights activist. \nPlease note that the live podcast will be conducted in Spanish. \nThis is a FREE community event supported by donations. To make a donation to Brava/Indómitas\, please click the button below. \nreserve tickets https://brava.my.salesforce-sites.com/ticket/#/events/a0SPa00000H1DXhMAN \nABOUT Diana Lara\nDiana Lara is an artist whose dance is a living testament to migration\, memory\, and resistance. The Honduran choreographer\, dancer\, and somatic educator invites us to explore\, through movement\, the traces left on the body by displacement\, colonialism\, and gender oppression.\nA 2002 graduate of the prestigious Center for Choreographic Research at Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts\, her career has bridged the gap between Honduras\, Mexico\, and the United States. Her work\, deeply rooted in Latinx culture\, fuses contemporary dance\, contact improvisation\, and somatic education\, creating pieces that have resonated on stages in Central America\, Berlin\, and the San Francisco Bay Area.\nBut her art transcends the stage. Her commitment to healing and community has led her to share her knowledge with survivors of domestic violence\, victims of forced displacement in Mexico\, and indigenous Lenca women in Honduras. Furthermore\, her training as a general practitioner allows her to approach the body not only as an instrument of expression\, but also as a territory of care and transformation.\nDon’t miss this interview to learn more about her inspiring work\, where dance becomes an act of resistance\, a space for healing\, and a powerful vehicle for cultural preservation.

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health presents The Turnaway Play
DESCRIPTION:UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health Presents: The Turnaway Play \nJoin the UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health for a staged reading of The Turnaway Play. Based on the groundbreaking study conducted by Bixby researchers\, the show tells the behind-the-scenes story of the study with humor and candor. It features the experiences of real women who received or were denied abortions across the United States. \nThe play is inspired and informed by the groundbreaking Turnaway Study\, conducted by Dr. Diana Greene Foster\, a 2023 MacArthur Fellow and researcher at the University of California\, San Francisco. Dr. Foster followed 1\,000 women from across the country for five years and obtained the first scientific results on the consequences people face when either having or being denied an abortion. The main finding of the Turnaway Study is that receiving an abortion does not harm the health and wellbeing of women\, but in fact\, being denied an abortion results in worse financial\, health and family outcomes. \nTICKETS\nChampion ticket ($250.00)\nSupporter ticket ($100.00)\nFriend ticket ($50.00)\nCommunity ticket ($20.00)\nhttps://ucsf.regfox.com/the-turnaway-play
