DESCRIPTION:Show off your skills and maybe learn some new ones while translating poems from all over the world. No need to be a poet. No second language required. Equipped with a glossary\, guided by a local translator\, and with the encouragement of friends (bring your own!)\, you’ll dismantle and reassemble the poem in a new language. Translation of poetry by its nature offers multiple possibilities: since there is no single “correct” rendering of a poem\, be prepared to share and defend your language choices. Who knows? Maybe it will change your entire relationship with language? With collaboration? With creation? Local writer and translator JiaJing Liu will host this casual workshop and spontaneous performance.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we honor the creativity and brilliance of our student authors while supporting our mission to provide free writing\, tutoring\, and publishing programs to over 7\,000 students in San Francisco. \nWe’ll hear from poet\, playwright\, and educator Chinaka Hodge\, one of the first 826 Valencia scholarship recipients who now works as a screenwriter (Marvel Studios’ Ironheart\, AMC’s Snowpiercer). \nWe will also be joined by acclaimed cartoonist\, author\, and educator Gene Luen Yang. Gene was the Library of Congress’ fifth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and his graphic novel American Born Chinese was made into a television series for Disney+. DESCRIPTION:A seven week workshop\nTeachers\nEmily Lam\nFor who\nOpen to 12 students\, grades 4-6\nWhen\nWednesdays\, March 20th to May 8th\nTime\n3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.\nLocation\nCommunity Room @ 626 Mission Bay Blvd N\n826 Valencia Mission Bay is holding a 7-week multimedia workshop centered on food and culture as seen through the lens of the youth. In collaboration with Kain Na\, a nonprofit focused on food insecurity\, students will explore the connection between food and community and showcase their food culture through writing\, collaging and drawings. The workshop aims to amplify and share the diversity of food cultures and practices as experienced and exposed to our youth. SUMMARY:826 Valencia: Worlds and Heroes: Fantasy Storytelling through Dungeons & Dragons (Ages 13-18)
DESCRIPTION:A four-session workshop\nTeacher\nMiranda Bumstead\nFor who\nOpen to 12 students\, ages 13-18\nWhen\nSundays\, March 24-April 21 (skipping April 7)\nTime\n12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.\nLocation\n826 Valencia Mission Center Writing Lab\nDo you dream of fighting dragons\, casting powerful spells\, and trawling through dungeons full of traps and intrigue? If you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings\, Harry Potter\, Alice in Wonderland\, or fantasy books in general\, then this might be the workshop for you. Using the lens and structure of the popular tabletop role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons\, students will explore how to write for a fantasy setting\, and implement their writings into a real game. They will practice creating complex\, relatable\, and compelling characters\, building a fantasy world of their own imagination\, and learn how to create an interesting plot. At the end of the workshop\, students will have a draft of at least one main character\, an outline for a fantasy world\, and a general understanding of how to play Dungeons & Dragons. Students\, will you answer the call and begin your quest? SUMMARY:826 Valencia: Picture Book Workshop with Dave Eggers (Ages 10–12)
DESCRIPTION:An eight-week workshop\nTeacher\nDave Eggers\nFor who\nOpen to 14 students\, ages 10-12\nWhen\nWednesdays\, 3/13\, 3/20\, 3/27\, 4/17\, 4/24\, 5/1\, 5/15\, & 5/22\nTime\n4:00 – 6:00 p.m.\nLocation\n849 Valencia (across the street from 826 Valencia!)\nThis class\, for kids ages 10-12\, allows students to create their own finished\, professional-looking picture books. Over 8 weeks\, the class will write\, revise\, and illustrate their own picture book. Newbery Medal-winner Dave Eggers will teach the class\, which is loosely based on how he himself was taught in fifth grade\, by his beloved teacher Mrs. Dunn. Students who would like to join the class should send a quick/funny note to Dave (in interest form). \nThe work will be serious\, so students must commit to the 8 classes\, and they should be ready to follow through. No homework\, though! All work can be done in class. And duos are welcome!
