As SF politicians increasingly lean on abstinence-0nly approaches to drug addiction, four UCSF experts warned that demanding abstinence without effective treatment can be dangerous. The physicians said that harm reduction, medication, and recovery programs used together are most effective in fighting addiction.

During his campaign, Mayor Lurie promised to build 1500 new shelter bedsโ€”but that number includes many beds already in the pipeline, some that replace existing shelter, and others that may not be built because of pushback. Xueer Lu reports on the real numbers.
