Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:
After years of scandals at the city’s last two public housing projects, the troubled Eugene Burger Management Corporation has been replaced—though on Potrero Hill, squatters still remain in a burnt-out building, and residents haven’t heard from the new management.
Mission Local has covered the Potrero Hill projects for years, with reporting that triggered city hearings on mismanagement and dangerous conditions. For back story, see Eleni Balakrishnan on the site manager who allegedly charged “rent” to squatters after a deadly fire.
Today’s Valentine’s Day, if you hadn’t noticed, and Naomi Beth Marcus has another lovely profile—this one about Harold Hoogasian, Jr., of the flower dynasty that’s sold blooms in the city since the 1920s. Apparently, kids who make corsages at their parents’ flower stands might eventually find romance there.
If judges allow Trump’s huge cuts to biomedical research funding from the National Institutes of Health, then UCSF will be in big trouble—as will patients in clinical trials, research labs, and the city itself. UCSF is San Francisco’s second-largest employer, and losing NIH money would mean massive layoffs.
More soon,
Sara
