Good morning!

We’ve got a lovely piece by Maria I. López remembering Juan Pablo Gutiérrez Sánchez, the founder of El Colectivo del Rescate Cultural, who died in 2021. Tonight’s Dia de los Muertos procession owes its spirit to him, and to all who worked with him over the decades to keep it independent.

Among the dead remembered tonight will be Sean Monterrosa, a 22-year-old Bernal Heights native killed by a Vallejo police officer in 2020. A new mural by Josué Rojas on 24th St. commemorates Monterrosa’s life and activism.

Yesterday, the Police Commission asked the SFPD to explain the skyrocketing racial disparities in SF cops’ use of force. Following Mission Local’s reporting, Commissioner Jesus Yánez demanded answers— but he didn’t get them from police brass. Eleni Balakrishnan breaks down the data and the arguments.

More soon,

Sara
