Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:
Nonprofits and supervisors warned that Mayor Lurie’s proposed cuts to civil legal aid would lead to more foreclosures, informal evictions, and homelessness. The city is facing an $818 million budget deficit.
SFPD officers made more arrests or citations for drugs in March than they have since 2018โand over a quarter happened within a block and a half of 16th & Mission. We look at the data, and ask whether increased police attention is lessening problems in the area.
Over in the Tenderloin, the SFPD says its curfew for corner stores is reducing “street loitering” and crime. Store owners, though, say they’re losing business, and that it’s unfair to exempt liquor stores from early closing.
Meanwhile, politicians continued to argue over the right words to use in a symbolic, non-binding ordinance about drug policy. Remember that the next time you hear “harm reduction” or “abstinence,” and ask what’s actually being done.
More soon,
Sara
