Good afternoon!

San Francisco scientists using AI have developed a new tool for detecting malaria that could radically speed up testing. We talk with scientists whose “Remoscope” is being tested in Uganda, where malaria is the leading cause of death.

Tech innovation is one part of the story of the fight against Covid; another is the power of community. You can do your part by getting vaccinated at Unidos en Salud at 24th and Capp, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The new boosters are free to everyone over 12, and help protect against long Covid. Get a flu shot, too, while you’re at it!

Then enjoy the weekend: A Cultural Mission talks with comedian Margo Gomez, whose one-woman show about the world’s oldest lesbian cruise ship is at the Brava Theater this weekend. Tom Heyman’s new acoustic album, “24th Street Blues,” focuses on the Mission, its struggles, and its residents. Catch him at the Makeout Room on Sunday.

More soon,

Sara
