Good afternoon!
Eleni Balakrishnan tells the tragic story of Alberto Vargas Quero, 23, an immigrant who arrived in San Francisco last Wednesday, hoping to make enough money to buy his mom a house. Two days later, Vargas started a job at Modern Hair Cuts on Mission Street, where he was shot dead that afternoon.
Xavier Becerra, Secretary of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, visited the city ahead of a potential run for governor. He talked trash about insurance companies, dwelt on the lessons of the Covid pandemic, and said that a coherent federal healthcare system “should not be commoditized.”
And speaking of the lessons of the pandemic, here’s some back story from 2020 on what it took to create a coherent response to Covid in the Mission.
If you’ve got a supervisorial race in your district, Mission Local is covering it. Keep an eye out for updates on where to meet up with our reporters.
More soon,
Sara
