Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

We’ve been documenting the city’s campaign to stop vending and drug use on the 16th St BART plaza and nearby streets for almost a month. As we reported yesterday, the vibes can change from hour to hourโ€”no police or a pair of officers, a handful of vendors or a crowd, alleyways swept empty or jam-packed with drug users.

Today, a number of sheriff’s deputies were at the plaza, issuing citations to at least two people, fingerprinting and photographing them before letting them go. The reason? “He was smoking as we drove by.”

Are the city’s efforts working? Is it enough to simply move people from one block to another? Does the police “Mobile Command Unit” actually stop crime? This Thursday, Joe Eskenazi will moderate a panel on the situation at Manny’s with Julian Ave. resident Rob Young and SFPD veteran Al Casciato. Get your tickets today.

More soon,

Sara
