Mission Local’s been covering the crackdown on 16th Street for 80 days now—and we’ve heard from readers that visiting once a day doesn’t give the full picture. Lydia Chávez goes back at night to see what’s up.

Mayor Daniel Lurie unveils his budget tomorrow, and Joe Eskenazi looks at the millions the Feds want to take away —and how thinking about the budget differently could help the city make the deficit a bit less painful.

Meanwhile, the SFUSD said it would cut 205 central office positions to address its budget deficit. But the cuts are actually hitting some school staff —including a school nurse and a special education teacher at John O’Connell in the Mission. Read Kaitna Shankar‘s full report.

Federal funding cuts are reaching San Francisco, and nonprofits are scrambling to fill the gap with private philanthropy. But foundations say they can’t fill the role of the public sector, and are just “doing their best to stop the bleeding.” 

Well, the petition for a recall of D4 Sup. Joel Engardio has been certified, with over 10,000 valid signatures. A special election for D4 residents will take place on Tuesday, September 16.
