Good afternoon!
Filmmaker and journalist Kevin Epps, convicted of manslaughter for a 2016 shooting in his home that he said was self-defense, was sentenced to six years in prison today. Eleni Balakrishan reports on the scene in the courtroom packed with Epps’ tearful supporters.
For back story, see Eleni’s reporting on the case.
The powerful statewide SEIU California has un-endorsed State Senator Scott Wiener in the congressional race to succeed Nancy Pelosi, over his opposition to San Francisco’s Prop D, the “Overpaid CEO Tax,” reports Io Yeh Gilman. Supervisor Connie Chan, always endorsed by S.F. SEIU, is now the state group’s sole endorsee.
The Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, which closed abruptly in January, could re-open by summer. Oscar Palma writes that funding could be restored if the center complies with guidelines that would allow it to receive grants under new fiscal sponsorship.
As rents rise and art spaces close around the city, Bayview‘s sprawling, isolated warehouses make an ideal location forย low-rent artists’ studiosโand massive parties. Marina Newman visits Sucka-Free Collective and the hand-built music venue it hopes will become permanent.
More soon,
Sara
