Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

Residents of streets and alleys around the 16th St. BART plaza say they’re overwhelmed by a enormous surge of new drug dealers and users—pushed into the Mission by a crackdown in SOMA, then into their streets by the police presence on the plaza. Neighbors say they’re afraid, and frustrated by a “cat-and-mouse chase” that doesn’t change anything.

Eleni Balakrishnan has the heartbreaking story of Theris “TC” Coats, whose family tried to get him off the streets for years, as he struggled with mental illness and drug addiction. His father got doctors, a city supervisor, the police, and a crisis team to help, but TC was arrested last Tuesday, and found dead in his S.F. jail cell Thursday. What happened?

We have an exit interview with former police commissioner Max Carter-Oberstone, ousted last month by Mayor Daniel Lurie. Read his thoughts on civilian oversight, police reform, and where the SFPD is going.

More soon,

Sara
