Good afternoon!
The death of Melvin Bulauan, a mentally-ill resident at a Tenderloin halfway house run by the for-profit prison operator GEO Group, has sparked charges of overcrowding and negligence at the facility. Bulauan’s family says “institutional failure” is responsible for his death, and D5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood called for an investigation of GEO Group.
The owner of Bissap Baobab, Marcos Senghor, is in negotiations to buy the Muddy Waters cafe on Valencia. Hisham and Elham Massarweh, who’ve run Muddy Waters since 1990, were mentors to Senghor when he arrived in the city.
And in another of our stories about small businesses around the city, we visit Aprรจs Vous, an “affordable and approachable” deli and catering shop on Taraval.
More soon,
Sara
