Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:
A jury found Nima Momeni guilty of second-degree murder in the stabbing of Bob Lee; he faces a sentence of up to life in prison. For back story, take a look through Eleni Balakrishnan’s consistently insightful coverage, and read Joe Eskenazi on the highly politicized rhetoric around Lee’s death.
The City Attorneyโs office won a $1million settlement against gig-staffing company WorkWhile, which evaded overtime pay and tried to make its workers pay a “Trust & Safety Fee” instead of providing workers’ comp. The gig company will now have to reclassify its workers as employees instead of independent contractors.
Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie has appointed Ned Segal, a former Twitter executive, as one of four “policy chiefs.” He’ll oversee the departments for building inspection, planning, economic and workforce development, housing and community development, the arts commission, libraries, and the airport. Quite the portfolio.
