Good afternoon! We’ve got another chilly, rainy, windy day. Just a couple quick notes:
A three-year-project by local artists to splash color onto a hotly contested development site has a new tribute to artist Yolanda Lopez. The wall of the adjacent Parque Niรฑos Unidos has been painted by artist Josue Rojas, whose new mural celebrates Lopez’ own iconography and tells the story of her Mission activism. Rojas, like many other Mission artists, was inspired directly by the celebrated Chicana painter and activist, who encouraged his art in times when he doubted himself. โShe told me never to apologize for being a painter,โ Rojas said. Soon after Yolanda Lรณpez died of cancer in 2021, Rojas took a younger artist under his wing to keep the lineage going. Read our lovely story about the power of art in community.
The Mission has one of the highest accidental overdose rates in San Francisco. Narcan (naloxone) reverses opioid overdoses, and can be used by friends or bystanders to save lives. Our map shows the bars, clubs, and organizations where you can find free Narcan and fentanyl test strips. Learn how to use them, and how to keep yourself and others safer.
A reminder: ODC performs at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Wednesday through Sunday, with ODCโs โDance Downtown.โ Two different programs feature a mix of dances, including a world premiere by ODC artistic director Brenda Way. Saturdayโs performance celebrates queer communities--arrive in drag April 1 and attend the show and after-party for free!ย Simply show up in drag and go to the box office.ย Information here.
Stay warm, watch out for falling branches, and keep safe,
Sara
