Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

Crankstart, the personal foundation of billionaire Michael Moritz, has given $3.4 million to hire more immigrant defense attorneys at the San Francisco public defender’s office. Joe Rivano Barros looks at Moritz’s political and charitable donations.

But billionaires aren’t funding everything. Hundreds of people packed City Hall for public comment today, protesting Mayor Lurie’s proposed budget cuts to food, housing, and legal aid programs.

The chief of staff of the SF Sheriff’s Department was booked into the county jail yesterday, charged with a hit-and-run and filing a false report. Richard Jue was off-duty and driving a city-owned vehicle at the time of the alleged incident.

Jordan Montero has a lovely story from the Excelsior about the community built around the Central Drug Store, which is closing after 116 years.

More soon,

Sara
