Today from Mission Local

Good morning!

The mayoral candidates are getting involved in the race for D5 supervisor against progressive incumbent Dean Preston. Breed has endorsed Bilal Mahmood; the tough-on-crime newcomer Scotty Jacobs is Mark Farrell‘s pick. Meanwhile, Preston’s endorsed by Peskinโ€”and by Democratic powerbroker Nancy Pelosi.

Who’s in charge? Joe Eskenazi looks at why Mayor London Breedโ€” in a “strong mayor” city where she has almost complete administrative control over departmentsโ€”is now pushing for “reformof the city charter.

And speaking of “strange and terrible,” did you see the DA’s office blast the MacArthur Foundation for withholding a grant for criminal justice reform until the city reduced the jail population? Brooke Jenkins’ chief of staff Monifa Willis (whose hiring was its own saga) accused the grantmaker of racism.

Hula hoops, a bookmobile, and puppies shared the Sunday Streets fair on Valencia yesterday. Crowds flocked to the mile-long car-free stretch, bopping to beats, blowing bubbles, and taking photos with real film. What a blast.

More soon,

Sara
