Good afternoon!

Michael Levine, a Massachusetts Medicaid executive who worked with public health head Daniel Tsai, is the sole candidate tapped to lead San Francisco’s homelessness department. Commissioners pointed to his redesign of Massachusetts’ behavioral health system to reduce emergency room visits, and tenancy preservation system to keep people in their housing.

Meanwhile, San Francisco says it wants to end street homelessness and drug use, but the city is closing homeless shelters that house over 450 people, including 85 beds that offered opioid addiction treatment. Eleni Balakrishnan reports that Mayor Daniel Lurie has been shifting away from long-term shelter to short-term programs, often run by law enforcement.

Junyao Yang reports that Sunset Youth Services, opposed by neighbors 34 years ago, is now part of the community and planning to purchase a Sunset church for its permanent home. Read what happened with young people from across the city, cops, and residents who said Black youth didn’t belong in the neighborhood.

Update: Supervisor Jackie Fielder has sent a letter to the Board of Supervisors clerk requesting to be excused “for personal reasons” through the end of June.

More soon,

Sara
