Today from Mission Local

Good morning!

It’s relatively early in the 2024 election year, but we’re already seeing partisan attacks on the press for reporting facts. Joe Eskenazi writes about the case of D5 supe candidate Bilal Mahmood and his backers, who railed against the Chronicle for noting that Mahmood had scrubbed his website of false claims to be a neuroscientist.

At least 447 new immigrants, mostly from Latin America, have come to the SFUSD’s Enrollment Center since Janaury, looking for schools for their kids. Staff there have become the city’s de facto “one-stop shop” for newcomer families, helping them connect with health care, shelter, and legal aid.

Over 50 Uber and Lyft drivers drove in a caravan from the 16th Street Safeway to Uber headquarters yesterday demanding fair pay, improved driver safety, and an end to unfair termination by ride-share companies. Uber and Lyft have threatened to withdraw from the area if a minimum wage law for drivers is passed.ย

Hope to see you tonight at Manny’s with Joe Rivano Barros, Joe Eskenazi, and Will Jarrett, who’ll present their latest reporting on big money in San Francisco elections. Bring your questions!

More soon,

Sara
