Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:
Well, it’s Inauguration Day in San Francisco, and Joe Eskenazi has a detailed look at the multiple problems Daniel Lurie, our new mayor, is facing— and what he can do about them. For starters, Joes’s hoping for some extremely un-sexy, plain old, boring, good management.
You can see what Lurie said at his swearing-in about his plans to tackle the fentanyl crisis, which would remove the Board of Supes’ ability to review and approve nonprofits’ contracts, and give that power to city departments.
Lurie’s plans will need support from the new president of the Board of Supervisors, D8 Supe Rafael Mandelman. After several days of deal-making, Mandelman ended up the sole nominee, endorsed by both progressives and moderates. Joe Eskenazi explains what it means for city politics.
Meanwhile, the California Department of Justice has ended its seven-year oversight of the SFPD, citing “substantial compliance” with reforms . The state warned, though, that Prop E’s changes in use-of-force policies could slow progress.
More soon,
Sara
