Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

Junyao Yang has a heartbreaking story about Gerardo de Avila Garcia, the man killed at a Mission gas station on New Year’s Eve after telling a customer not to “talk bad” to an employee. Garcia, who worked at Limรณn as a server, was remembered by his colleagues as a consistently kind person who “always stands up for somebody.”

Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie announced the last of four new deputies who will streamline reporting from department heads. Kunal Modi, a McKinsey partner who serves on the board of St. Anthony’s Foundation, will coordinate health, homelessness, and family services.

Kevin Ortiz is back as president of the Latinx Democratic Club after an internal investigation cleared him of allegations of sexual assault. The women who made the allegations did not participate in the investigation.

More soon,

Sara
