Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

Beya Alcaraz, the new D4 supervisor appointed by Mayor Daniel Lurie, wrote in a series of texts that she paid some of her former pet shop workers “under the table,” and wrote off personal spending as business expenses, thus skimping on taxes. Joe Eskenazi has the texts, and more questions about Lurie’s vetting of the political newbie.

After Theris Coats II died in San Francisco jail, his cousins wrote a play about his life, hoping to reach other familes dealing with mental illness and drug addiction. The play, opening this month, received grants from Chris Larsen‘s foundation Avenue Greenlight and Neighbors for a Better San Franciso.

For the back story, see Eleni Balakrishnan’s heartbreaking piece from March on Coats’ death, and his father’s struggle to track his son down and get him treatment.

See what’s happening right nowโ€”and what’s up nextโ€”in museums and galleries around the city.

More soon,

Sara
