Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

First the news: Residents were evacuated from buildings, and four blocks shut down this morning, after construction workers struck a gas line near Hampshire and 24th. Follow Mission Local for updates.

The trial of Nina Momeni for the murder of tech executive Bob Lee has begun. The prosecution presented Momeni as an aggressor who stabbed Lee through the heart in a rage, while the defense argued that Momeni “stood his ground” against a drug-addled Lee.

There’s so much back story here. The 2023 murder drew inordinate attention, with many blaming “woke” San Francisco, rising crime, homeless people, Chesa Boudin and/or drug users for Lee’s death. Joe Eskenazi broke the story that Lee’s alleged killer was also a tech figure. And he wrote an impassioned piece about how Lee’s death was co-opted for political purposes. As this year’s election rhetoric about crime escalates, it remains uncannily relevant.

More soon,
