Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon! Here’s the latest:

San Francisco’s police staffing is at a historic low—but so is its crime rate. Joe Eskenazi and Kelly Waldron look closely at SFPD’s numbers, what they mean, and what San Francisco really wants its cops to do.

Some people want cops to stop the vending on Mission Street, but right now DPW workers are in charge of enforcement. Sen. Scott Weiner, backed by Mayor Lurie, is reintroducing a state bill to allow police in San Francisco to act against fencing operations of suspected stolen goods.

Just minutes after Weiner and Lurie gave their press conference this morning in the Mission, a shooting broke out across the street; no injuries were reported. We’ll update with any news.

We’ve got an intro interview with new D5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood. He talks with Eleni Balakrishnan about, yes, street vending and safety— as well as transit, housing, and the Fillmore Safeway.

More soon,

Sara
