Today from Mission Local

Good afternoon!

You thought it was news when Nancy Pelosi endorsed democratic socialist Dean Preston for supervisor in D5? At an unusually polite forum last night, opponents Scotty Jacobs and Bilal Mahmood praised Preston’s record, and said they agreed with him on tenant protections, rent control, and community ambassadors.

Oscar Palma talked with Carmen Marquez, an immigrant from Venezuala, who contracted meningitis while staying with her daughter at a family shelter, and wound up with her foot and nine fingers amputated. The city originally planned to have Marquez discharged from the hospital to another congregate shelter; after protests by Faith in Action, she was offered a temporary hotel room for six to eight months.

We’ve got a lovely obituary for Maria Refugio Vigil, the matriarch of Puerto Alegre ,who died at 91 in her Mission home. Refugio cooked for decades at the family-run restaurants “until she couldn’t anymore.” Her children made tacos paseados in her memory and distributed them to mourners.

More soon,

Sara
