DESCRIPTION:In this engaging workshop\, learn about how to grow your own edible plants year-round in San Francisco’s mild climate. \nIn this in-person workshop\, learn to take full advantage of the unique gardening climate in San Francisco\, where you can grow your own fruits and vegetables year-round! Join us throughout the seasons for our Grow Your Own Food workshop. \nSome topics that will be covered in the months the workshop is offered: \n    January: Soil fertility\, weed management\, and what to plant now.\n    March: Growing your own transplants\, what seeds to start indoors and outdoors\, and successful transplanting of seedlings.\n    May: Warm weather crops and plants that attract beneficial insects and watering needs of your spring garden.\n    July: Planning for your winter garden and summer pests and diseases to look out for.\n    September: Preparing your garden for the cool and rainy season and harvesting the fruits of your summer garden.\n    November: Taking advantage of the rainy season by planting cold hardy crops such as garlic\, peas\, and edible perennials. \nOur expert instructor Carey Craddock is a garden coach\, consultant\, and horticultural enthusiast. She has been teaching at Garden for the Environment since 1998\, first as a Get Up! intern and then as a staff member until 2003. She trained in both CCSF and Merritt College’s landscape horticulture programs and loves to combine her passion for art and horticulture into creative projects. She runs Carey Craddock Gardens where she specializes in ecological garden design and growing food. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Beginning Beekeeping: The Basics and Mid-Season Colony Health
DESCRIPTION:So you’re thinking of becoming a beekeeper? This workshop is an introduction to bees and beekeeping practices whether you’re starting a backyard hive or are just curious about bees. We’ll cover some basics on bees\, their progress through spring and summer\, and what to expect as colonies expand in the warmer\, longer days. There will be a class outline\, suggested reading\, and additional recommendations provided. Instructors will bring an observation hive for you to see bees in action\, and you’ll also get to see GFE’s hives from a distance. \nThe class is designed for absolute beginners so no prerequisite knowledge is required. We will have more beginning beekeeping classes this year\, and each will emphasize what is happening in a beehive throughout the seasons. Keep checking our workshop schedule for more beekeeping workshops! \nInstructors: \nOur instructors are members of the San Francisco Beekeepers Association and experienced\, longtime beekeepers. \n    Philip Gerrie: Philip is past president of the San Francisco Beekeepers Association and has kept bees in SF for 25 years. He maintains and average of ten hives.\n    Dan DeCuir: Dan is an avid gardener and backyard hen handler who has been keeping bees since 2006. He has been fascinated by social insects since childhood\, when he dreamed of having a farm. He currently keeps three beehives in San Francisco: on a neighbor’s rooftop (at her request)\, at the Park Street Community Garden\, and at Alemany Farm\, where he has taught beginner beekeeper classes. He is a member of the San Francisco Beekeepers Association\, and on the swarm catcher list – his first hive was a re-homed swarm. When not tending to his bees\, Dan can be found planting vegetables and weeding in his plot at the Arlington Community Garden\, feeding his backyard chickens\, or trying to catch Dungeness crabs at local beaches. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

The Jing Ying Cantonese Opera Institute will present its 13th Cantonese Opera Festival on May 16–17 at the Great Star Theater in Chinatown. Through live performances and community engagement\, the festival highlights the enduring vitality of Cantonese opera as an intangible cultural heritage in contemporary society. \nAs one of the few organizations in Northern California dedicated to promoting Cantonese opera\, Jing Ying has long been committed to expanding access through bilingual productions\, educational programs\, and public dialogue. By breaking down language and cultural barriers\, the organization enables audiences of diverse backgrounds to experience and appreciate this traditional art form. Organizers hope that through more interactive and accessible presentations\, this centuries-old performance tradition will continue to evolve and thrive within American society. \nThe festival will take place over two days\, with a special program on May 16 featuring State Senator Scott Wiener\, former Mayor Willie Brown\, Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman\, and Supervisor Danny Sauter\, joining community members on stage for a shared performance. \nJing Ying notes that as the performing arts landscape rapidly evolves\, traditional opera faces challenges including shifting audience demographics and cultural distance. Through cross-linguistic and cross-cultural innovation\, the organization aims to bring more young people and non-Chinese-speaking audiences into the theater\, offering new ways to engage with this historic art form. \nOrganizers emphasize that Cantonese opera is not only a legacy of the past\, but a living tradition that continues to be reinterpreted and renewed. She found David Ford’s class at The Marsh in the fall of 2020 and won a 2021 TITAN Award from Theatre Bay Area to support the development of her first full-length solo show. Oy\, does he wonder! So he asked a bunch of couples what brought them together and keeps them from pulling apart. Meet a Jewish couple who met on Craigslist\, an interfaith pair who met at a Halloween party\, and more. Budd plays close to a dozen characters\, using their own words taken from hours of interviews\, and weaves in his relentless\, heartfelt\, and hilarious search for “the one.” Oy\, What They Said About Love (Best of the 2024 SF Fringe) is the newest mashup of personal storytelling and documentary theater from an award-winning solo performer who “sparkles with manic and irrepressible charm” (Theatrius). \nArtist Biography \nSteve Budd (Writer & Performer) has performed with such Bay Area theaters as the San Francisco Playhouse\, New Conservatory\, Custom Made\, Central Works\, and Marin Shakespeare. Budd’s previous solo show\, Seeing Stars\, enjoyed a 6-week run at The Marsh in 2024 and delighted audiences in San Diego and Fresno. What They Said About Sex\, created from interviews\, proved a crowd-pleaser in Washington\, DC; San Diego; and Kansas City. His award-winning solo show What They Said About Love (Best of the 2016 SF Fringe\, among other accolades)\, also built from interviews\, has performed to packed houses in San Francisco\, LA\, Indianapolis\, New York\, Boston\, Ottawa\, and London. \nSince Oy\, What They Said About Love ran at The Marsh in Sept. and Oct. 2025\, it has played to packed houses in San Miguel de Allende\, Mexico; Israel; Santa Monica; and New York City. \nMark Kenward (Co-Director) is an award-winning director\, producer\, writer\, and performer of solo theater. The story is told by inhabitants of the city who lived through this. This “human safari” is currently ongoing in Kherson\, with drone attacks occurring to this day. \nThe film’s director\, Zarina Zabrisky\, has been a San Francisco resident since the ’90s and has been based in Ukraine as a war correspondent since the full-scale invasion. This film has been screened more than 100 times all over the world\, but this is the first screening in Zarina’s home town! \nAdmission: We kindly encourage a donation of $20 (or whatever you are comfortable with) for admission at the door (cash/Venmo/PayPal/Zelle). Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”
