SUMMARY:Peacock Lounge: Fletcher Pratt\, Hen House\, Heco\, 100\,000\,000 Unread Messages
DESCRIPTION:All-ages\, $5-$15 notaflof \nFletcher Pratt\nDarkitecture of the mind’s inmost spaces\, that is Fletcher Pratt’s speciality. Boundless in abstraction yet never disjointed\, his sounds stretch like skin continuous across an impossible skeleton\, inexorable in motion\, shifting lithe and unseen. On this night\, an epidermal split leaks that bone darkness into the light\, the jugular tapped as video\, spilling in both digital and analogue synthesis.\n \nHen House\nWant in\, or do you want out? Which is the cage and which the escape? Forget the foxes\, evil arrives ever from within\, between\, behind\, below. Violence is already passe. It’s predator-free living that conjures the deepest darkness\, unhatched death denied\, an embrace that would keep and never kill. What is wanting? Behold as this hag-industrial duo measures out sound one mountain at a time\, pinning you beneath the monstrosity of intimacy\, the plangent abyss of an eternal interior. Let their “Her Thrown” album aquaint you with objectless terror\, no escape from what awaits inside that roost without rulers: the gold hold of the Peacock Lounge.\nhttps://hen-house.bandcamp.com/album/her-thrown \nHeco\nIf you think you know him\, there’s no way you do and if you think you don’t then likely you’re onto him like if ever you’ve realized the Christian war vets who just performed\, or the squirming aliens that burst from chrysalis right at your feet\, or the band that seemed to sing and move backwards til the stage was empty and no one clapped\, or whose soundcheck was actually lipsynched to a pre-recorded soundcheck\, or that one excruciating live birth at great american\, or the conlon nanacarrow records offspeed at a slew of shows up some stairs in the lower bottoms at… a certain palace\, running over himself with his own truck\, reminiscent of the legendary Mono Pause\, a master carpenter\, a jack of all attacks\, the anti-cheshirecat and leader of the Starvation Army Marching Band\, then you also know there’s no guessing what he’ll do this night\, or on any other. Just don’t miss\, and don’t get hit. \n\n100\,000\,000 Unread Messages\nThere exist unknowable things that you can’t know because they are so numerous they constitute a whole set\, the null set\, the abyss\, and yet it has your name all over it. Time to get started somewhere\, you aren’t alone in fact the number of minds who cannot know excede even the number of unknown things and when abysses overlap… well the duo of Isabelle Waldner Kalb & Conner Tomaka will take it from there.

SUMMARY:Mirus Gallery: Travis Gillan solo exhibition (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Mirus Gallery San Francisco presents Cyclical Snakes and Infinite Inward\, a captivating solo exhibition by Travis Gillan. This striking series of intricate paintings invite the viewer to explore consciousness through painted layers of colors with symbolism and shape that emanate a kind of transformation. Through this body of work\, Gillan has formed an emblem of visual language created to inspire unity in our presently fragmented collective psyche. Join us for the opening reception on Friday\, May 15th\, 2026\, from 6–10 PM. \nAbout the Exhibition: \nCyclical Snakes and Infinite Inward is a collection of paintings that bridge 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional planes through symbolism\, color and movement that evoke a reconciliation of the schism in the collective consciousness. Gillan’s paintings serve as a beacon of inner transformation\, in hopes of dissolving the illusion of separation while illuminating connection.. His work explores a duality that mirrors a fundamental paradigm of the human mind\, reflecting the reciprocal nature of reality\, where inner worlds shape the outer. It suggests a fluid exchange between dimensions of experience\, where higher forces may both rise from within and descend from above. \nAbout the Artist: \nTravis Gillan is a Colorado-based visual artist whose work is rich with layered symbolism\, each piece unfolding like a meditation. Gillan’s work offers deeper insights into the nature of human consciousness and glimpses of what may lie beyond.. The conceptual rigor of the work is grounded in a meticulously balanced synthesis of form and opulent color harmony. Each composition reflects a deliberate orchestration of chromatic nuance and structural precision\, revealing a thoughtful interplay between surface and depth. Through his use of flat\, saturated shapes that intersect with volumetric forms and generate a visual tension that both collapses and expands the perceived dimensional field.

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Beginning Beekeeping: The Basics and Mid-Season Colony Health
DESCRIPTION:So you’re thinking of becoming a beekeeper? This workshop is an introduction to bees and beekeeping practices whether you’re starting a backyard hive or are just curious about bees. We’ll cover some basics on bees\, their progress through spring and summer\, and what to expect as colonies expand in the warmer\, longer days. There will be a class outline\, suggested reading\, and additional recommendations provided. Instructors will bring an observation hive for you to see bees in action\, and you’ll also get to see GFE’s hives from a distance. \nThe class is designed for absolute beginners so no prerequisite knowledge is required. We will have more beginning beekeeping classes this year\, and each will emphasize what is happening in a beehive throughout the seasons. Keep checking our workshop schedule for more beekeeping workshops! \nInstructors: \nOur instructors are members of the San Francisco Beekeepers Association and experienced\, longtime beekeepers. \n Philip Gerrie: Philip is past president of the San Francisco Beekeepers Association and has kept bees in SF for 25 years. He maintains and average of ten hives.\n Dan DeCuir: Dan is an avid gardener and backyard hen handler who has been keeping bees since 2006. He has been fascinated by social insects since childhood\, when he dreamed of having a farm. He currently keeps three beehives in San Francisco: on a neighbor’s rooftop (at her request)\, at the Park Street Community Garden\, and at Alemany Farm\, where he has taught beginner beekeeper classes. He is a member of the San Francisco Beekeepers Association\, and on the swarm catcher list – his first hive was a re-homed swarm. When not tending to his bees\, Dan can be found planting vegetables and weeding in his plot at the Arlington Community Garden\, feeding his backyard chickens\, or trying to catch Dungeness crabs at local beaches. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

SUMMARY:Shaping SF: Wide Open Town
DESCRIPTION:Author Nan Alamilla Boyd journeys with us through the 20th century San Francisco of gay men and lesbians\, examining the culture that developed around the bar scene and homophile activism when the “City That Knows How” became a town where anything goes. Boyd’s Wide Open Town is a vivid re-creation of bar and drag life\, an absorbing portrait of central figures in the communities\, and a provocative chronicling of this period in the country’s most transgressive city. Learn about early history of the gay and lesbian civil rights movement prior to 1965 as we walk together along Polk Street and into the Tenderloin. \nRSVP to shaping@foundsf.org

SUMMARY:Great Star Theater: 13th Jing Ying Cantonese Opera Festival
DESCRIPTION:During the upcoming AAPI Heritage Month\, San Francisco will welcome a cultural event that bridges tradition and modern expression. The Jing Ying Cantonese Opera Institute will present its 13th Cantonese Opera Festival on May 16–17 at the Great Star Theater in Chinatown. Through live performances and community engagement\, the festival highlights the enduring vitality of Cantonese opera as an intangible cultural heritage in contemporary society. \nAs one of the few organizations in Northern California dedicated to promoting Cantonese opera\, Jing Ying has long been committed to expanding access through bilingual productions\, educational programs\, and public dialogue. By breaking down language and cultural barriers\, the organization enables audiences of diverse backgrounds to experience and appreciate this traditional art form. Organizers hope that through more interactive and accessible presentations\, this centuries-old performance tradition will continue to evolve and thrive within American society. \nThe festival will take place over two days\, with a special program on May 16 featuring State Senator Scott Wiener\, former Mayor Willie Brown\, Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman\, and Supervisor Danny Sauter\, joining community members on stage for a shared performance. \nJing Ying notes that as the performing arts landscape rapidly evolves\, traditional opera faces challenges including shifting audience demographics and cultural distance. Through cross-linguistic and cross-cultural innovation\, the organization aims to bring more young people and non-Chinese-speaking audiences into the theater\, offering new ways to engage with this historic art form. \nOrganizers emphasize that Cantonese opera is not only a legacy of the past\, but a living tradition that continues to be reinterpreted and renewed. Looking ahead\, Jing Ying will continue to promote the development of Cantonese opera in the Bay Area through performances\, education\, and community engagement\, allowing it to flourish within a multicultural environment. \nTickets range from $30 to $100. For more information and ticketing\, please refer to the organizer’s website or event materials.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Monthly Chocolate Club at Manny's - Let's Explore Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Monthly discussions exploring and enjoying the wonders of chocolate! Bring curiosity and a chocolate to share! \nVenture with us into this endless and delicious topic. \nEach club session is a round table discussion in the Living Room\, at the back tables. \nWhat you bring to the conversation is curiosity and chocolate to share. Your contribution may be a bar or a confection\, a nostalgic favorite\, a sample of a rare cacao\, or even something you dislike and want to learn more about. Everyone please bring something to contribute to this beautiful community! \nHere are a few infrequently asked questions about chocolate: \n What actually is chocolate?\n Why does chocolate resonate so vividly with us in body\, mind\, and spirit?\n Cacao is called the “Food of the Gods” and is highly nutritious. What is science showing us about phytonutrients that benefit our health and well-being?\n How might we think about chocolate in contemporary culture and our shared human history? The oldest confirmed evidence of cacao use by our ancestors is approximately 5\,000 years ago. Our history and future with chocolate are worth discussing.\n We have a complex language for discussing wine—why not cacao and chocolate? \nWho is David? \nDavid has fifteen years of professional experience and a lifetime of enthusiasm for chocolate. As a chocolatier\, he makes delightful creations with amazing chocolate in micro-batches and offers them online and at farmers markets. His career in chocolate is rooted in pastry and chocolate production. Working with farmers\, researchers\, chocolate makers\, chefs\, and fellow chocolatiers\, he continually explores and enjoys the culture of chocolate. \nSpace is limited. Please reserve a seat at the table. \nMore information about David and chocolate can be found on his website: https://www.duchocolatier.com/

SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Petits Pas presents: Here & Now
DESCRIPTION:An Original Dance and Theater Experience by Virginie Personne & Marie Walburg \nHere & Now celebrates 10 years of Petits Pas through a heartfelt mix of theater and dance — the school’s signature artistic language. \nSet during a joyful anniversary dinner\, the show brings together guests from the past whose encounters awaken memories of previous creations and open conversations about our modern world. Through a playful and poetic journey\, Here and Now explores imagination\, connection\, and transformation. The dance sequences blend highlights from past performances into something new and vibrant\, reflecting the creative spirit that defines Petits Pas. In the end\, the performance becomes a celebration of community\, growth\, and presence — a reminder that what truly matters is being here and now.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Cybersentics Book Club May 2026: Ars vs. Techne - A False Dichotomy?
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on lectures Lewis Mumford delivered at Columbia University in 1952\, “Art and Technics” maps a tension between two seemingly disparate ways of navigating the world — one oriented toward efficiency\, the other toward meaning — and argues that modern society’s fixation on technics has deprived daily life of symbolic concerns. \nThis divide is rather visible in the Bay Area\, where the worlds of aspiring tech entrepreneurs and embattled humanists exist in parallel\, with strikingly little overlap in values and an ever-widening gap in socioeconomic power. With Mumford as a guide\, we will also consider AI and surveillance systems as technologies increasingly deployed not as tools of knowledge\, but of control.
