SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Cybersentics Book Club May 2026: Ars vs. Techne - A False Dichotomy?
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on lectures Lewis Mumford delivered at Columbia University in 1952\, “Art and Technics” maps a tension between two seemingly disparate ways of navigating the world — one oriented toward efficiency\, the other toward meaning — and argues that modern society’s fixation on technics has deprived daily life of symbolic concerns. \nThis divide is rather visible in the Bay Area\, where the worlds of aspiring tech entrepreneurs and embattled humanists exist in parallel\, with strikingly little overlap in values and an ever-widening gap in socioeconomic power. With Mumford as a guide\, we will also consider AI and surveillance systems as technologies increasingly deployed not as tools of knowledge\, but of control.

SUMMARY:Great Star Theater: 13th Jing Ying Cantonese Opera Festival
DESCRIPTION:During the upcoming AAPI Heritage Month\, San Francisco will welcome a cultural event that bridges tradition and modern expression. The Jing Ying Cantonese Opera Institute will present its 13th Cantonese Opera Festival on May 16–17 at the Great Star Theater in Chinatown. Through live performances and community engagement\, the festival highlights the enduring vitality of Cantonese opera as an intangible cultural heritage in contemporary society. \nAs one of the few organizations in Northern California dedicated to promoting Cantonese opera\, Jing Ying has long been committed to expanding access through bilingual productions\, educational programs\, and public dialogue. By breaking down language and cultural barriers\, the organization enables audiences of diverse backgrounds to experience and appreciate this traditional art form. Organizers hope that through more interactive and accessible presentations\, this centuries-old performance tradition will continue to evolve and thrive within American society. \nThe festival will take place over two days\, with a special program on May 16 featuring State Senator Scott Wiener\, former Mayor Willie Brown\, Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman\, and Supervisor Danny Sauter\, joining community members on stage for a shared performance. \nJing Ying notes that as the performing arts landscape rapidly evolves\, traditional opera faces challenges including shifting audience demographics and cultural distance. Through cross-linguistic and cross-cultural innovation\, the organization aims to bring more young people and non-Chinese-speaking audiences into the theater\, offering new ways to engage with this historic art form. \nOrganizers emphasize that Cantonese opera is not only a legacy of the past\, but a living tradition that continues to be reinterpreted and renewed. Looking ahead\, Jing Ying will continue to promote the development of Cantonese opera in the Bay Area through performances\, education\, and community engagement\, allowing it to flourish within a multicultural environment. \nTickets range from $30 to $100. For more information and ticketing\, please refer to the organizer’s website or event materials.

SUMMARY:Mission Comics & Art: Fred Noland Signing!
DESCRIPTION:Join us is welcoming local artist Fred Noland and his new book OUR LITTLE WILD TIME!\n“The first collection of short graphic stories by the veteran cartoonist\, this volume features the best of the author’s short works.\nA dark corner of a rail car\, on the underside of a motel mattress\, find the spot where the depraved and the absurd bump lyrical uglies. In this collection of short stories\, portraits\, and graphic biography and commentary\, Fred Noland embarks on a tour through the unreal\, hilarious\, and often very real dimensions of the seedier side of human nature.\nIn the lead story “Midnight Creep\,” a supernatural southern gothic steeped in blues folklore\, the devil is hot on a killer’s heels. Angel dust is in the air in the cyclical and comedic “Dusted.” Other attractions include an ode to the iconoclastic expressionist George Grosz\, cholos playing putt putt\, and more.”\nFred Noland’s specialty is visual storytelling\, whether in animation\, comics\, or illustration. Noland’s comics have appeared in the New Yorker\, Popula and the East Bay Express. His illustrations have appeared in LA Weekly\, Nickelodeon Jr.\, Xbox Magazine\, Revolver\, Canoe & Kayak and more. He was the chief artist on the animated short series “Priced Out” which has been shown world-wide. His graphic novel biography about turn-of-the-century champion cyclist Major Taylor is scheduled for release from Drawn & Quarterly in 2026.\nFred lives in Oakland\, California\, where he is an avid but unremarkable cyclist and a proud poppa.\nhttp://www.frednoland.com/
