SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Basquiat
DESCRIPTION:Now in black and white and newly restored! \nNo painter electrified the 1980s art scene like Jean-Michel Basquiat\, a New York street kid whose visionary blending of expressionism\, pop art\, and the radical new aesthetics of hip-hop and graffiti propelled him to international fame before a tragic early demise. Julian Schnabel’s stunning debut charts Basquiat’s dizzying rise and fall with an insider’s eye for authentic details of the downtown arts demimonde as well as a fellow postmodernist’s interest in the dream-like and surreal. Jeffrey Wright’s brilliant introductory performance provides trenchant insight into the artist’s creative passions and personal demons. Cemented by David Bowie as a spot-on Andy Warhol\, Basquiat’s supporting cast is a murderers’ row of Hollywood legends and art lovers (Dennis Hopper\, Gary Oldman\, Benicio del Toro\, Parker Posey\, Christopher Walken\, Willem Dafoe) lending their talents to one of the high points of 90s independent cinema\, an intimate elegy for a once-in-a-generation artistic phenomenon.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: In the Summers
DESCRIPTION:Siblings Violeta and Eva live in California with their mother\, but every summer they travel to Las Cruces\, New Mexico\, to spend time with their loving but unpredictable father\, Vicente (René “Residente” Pérez Joglar). Over the course of four formative summers that span adolescence to early adulthood\, Violeta and Eva learn to appreciate their father as a person\, his flaws and limitations inseparable from his passion and tenderness. Lovers come and go\, the backyard goes to seed\, but the idea of home remains knotty and elusive. This powerful and deeply personal directorial debut from Alessandra Lacorazza offers a nuanced study of young people questioning their place within their families\, their communities\, and their identities.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Les Misérables
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTED IN THREE PARTS: A Storm in a Skull • The Thénardiers • Liberty\, Sweet Liberty\nLes Misérables (1934) \n5:30 PM The novel\, the film\, the musical\, the video game\, the cookware set: everyone knows at a little something about LES MISÉRABLES\, even if no one has seen every adaptation of Victor Hugo’s sprawling tale of the labors of Jean Valjean in nineteenth-century France. Director Raymond Bernard mixes the expressionism of silent film with the tilted angles of film noir\, making his 1934 version of the “ur-noir novel” into a triumphant distillation of the new form of dark cinema that emerged in France in that decade. \nThe great homely “actors’ actor” Harry Baur is Valjean\, carrying the three-part\, four-hour epic on his shoulders\, pursued by the unshakable Javert (Charles Vanel)\, and raising his stepdaughter even as he is continually forced to remain on the run. \nThe superb photography is by Jules Kruger\, one of the key collaborators with Abel Gance on his 1927 silent masterpieces NAPOLEON. You will see the connective tissue between the two works when you surrender yourself to the rarest of all screenings in the FRENCH series—a once-in-a-lifetime experience! (1934\, dir. Raymond Bernard\, 287m). *There will be two intermissions.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: The Time Masters
DESCRIPTION:Restored in 4K in 2023 at the initiative of CITE FILMS in collaboration with the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and with the support of the CNC \nDirected by visionary science-fiction animator René Laloux (Fantastic Planet) and designed by the legendary Jean Giraud (a.k.a. Mœbius) The Time Masters is a visually fantastic foray into existentialist space adventure. After his parents are killed on the dangerous planet Perdide\, young Piel (voiced by Frédéric Legros) survives by maintaining radio contact with Jaffar (Jean Valmont)\, a pilot transporting the exiled Prince Matton (Yves-Marie Maurin) and Princess Belle (Monique Thierry) from their former kingdom. Jaffar seeks the help of Silbad (Michel Elias)\, a cheerful old-timer who knows how to circumvent Perdide’s hazards\, including brain-devouring insects and watery graves. Along the way\, Jaffar and company encounter a pair of impish homunculi stowaways\, identity-less angels controlled by an amorphous hive mind\, and the Masters of Time\, mysterious beings who can bend reality and perhaps reveal to the heroes their secret origins and destinies. Based on the 1958 science fiction novel L’Orphelin de Perdide (The Orphan of Perdide) by Stefan Wul. \nBased on the French novel L’Orphelin de Perdide written by Stefan Wul. Bring your copy of the book at any of the screenings of The Time Masters and get a free small popcorn! \nThe Time Masters kicks off our ongoing animation series Page to Frame: Animated Adaptations Abound.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: A Friend Will Come Tonight + Not Guilty
DESCRIPTION:PART ONE of FRENCH ’24 comes to a rousing conclusion with two films featuring one of the most unique actors in film history—Michel Simon\, the towering epitome of that uniquely French creation known as the monstre sacré (sacred monster).\nA Friend Will Come Tonight / Un ami viendra ce soir \n7:00 PM Just what is going on in that strange insane asylum located on the outskirts of Paris? What kind of misdirection is afoot as rumblings of a knockout punch to the occupying Nazis begin to circulate? Could there be a method behind the madness that Michel Simon and others (among them Madeleine Sologne\, Paul Bernard\, Louis Salou\, and Saturnin Fabre) continue to foreground until a certain time on a certain evening? Is this liberation\, or is this lunacy? Director Raymond Bernard\, past his top-of-the-mountain achievements with LES MISÉRABLES\, proves he still has plenty left in the tank as he promises you that A FRIEND WILL COME TONIGHT… (1946\, dir\, Raymond Bernard\, 92m)\nNot Guilty / Non coupable \n9:00 PM Feigning madness is one thing—but going mad is something else entirely! And there is no one who can go mad the way Michel Simon does it in NOT GUILTY. A dissolute drunk of a doctor in a dismal part of the French provinces\, Simon’s character accidentally kills a pedestrian one night as he and his mistress (Jany Holt) are driving home. When he fails to confess and the murder goes unsolved\, something snaps inside him and he enters a “serial killer fugue state” where he believes he can kill with impunity…but then he starts to crave recognition for his series of unsolved crimes! \nDirector Henri Decoin and scenarist Marc-Gilbert Sauvajon devise one of noir’s strangest (and strangely exhilarating) excursions into the dark pit of lunacy with this one. Only its third screening in America…and guess who screened it the other two times! (1947\, dir. Henri Decoin\, 95m)

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Pulse (35mm)
DESCRIPTION:Part of You Are So Cursed: J-Horror Classics \n“In turn-of-the-21st century Tokyo\, youths are attracted by the promise of connection offered by the explosion of internet access. Yet the downside of this technological shift hits a small group of young coworkers hard when one of their own seems prompted to suicide by strange images he has found online. Soon\, these images are popping up everywhere and death spreads like a virus throughout the city and eventually the world. Kurosawa’s master class in alienated dread spawned a U.S. remake\, but the original remains the best of the internet-horror subgenre and one of the most terrifying movies ever made. “Ultimately\, this is a film about apocalypse\, and Kurosawa replaces the usual auguries of panic and fear with a slow\, creeping realization that the world is being emptied of human life.” – Michael Koresky\, Reverse Shot

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: SF Black Film Fest presents: Black Boys Don’t Talk
DESCRIPTION:Attending Filmmakers: Writer Cat Brooks\, Director Elizabeth Carter\, and Actor Margo Hall from the film Bottled Spirits and Director Marc Stallion from the film Black Boys Don’t Talk. \nSan Francisco Black Film Festival’s mission is to celebrate African American cinema and the African cultural Diaspora and to showcase a diverse collection of films – from emerging and established filmmakers. This is accomplished by presenting Black films\, which reinforce positive images and dispel negative stereotypes\, and providing film artists from the bay area in particular and around the world in general\, a forum for their work to be viewed and discussed. SFBFF believes film can lead to a better understanding of and communication between peoples of diverse cultures\, races\, and lifestyles\, while simultaneously serving as a vehicle to initiate dialogue on the important issues of our times. \nSF Black Film Festival has selected the following films: \nFilm: Bottled Spirits\nDirected by: Elizabeth Carter\nStarring: Margo Hall\nRuntime: 34m\nSynopsis: 50-something Louise is a native of West Oakland\, California; a community once known as the Harlem of the West\, and which gave birth to the Black Panther Party. Gentrification has turned her beloved community into unfriendly and unrecognizable territory and the weight of being Black in America now threatens to crush her. She straps on the daily armor of alcohol\, cigarettes and a sharp tongue to block out the constant ache of losing everything that ever mattered. On this day however\, a door she has been banging on for years magically opens\, an ancestor arrives to help and Louise battles her demons – and herself – in a desperate attempt to find the courage to walk the difficult path toward redemption. \nFilm: Black Boys Don’t Talk\nDirected by: Marc Stallion\nStarring: Jordyn Elaynee\nRuntime: 59m\nSynopsis: Lynn\, a rookie journalist\, gets assigned on her first week to do an exclusive with Duffman Brown\, a failed college football star. The narrative that her boss gives her to follow quickly falls apart as Duffman sees right through her attempts to make him look like a bad guy. Lynn learns who Duffman really is and changes the narrative of his article\, her boss isn’t happy about this or Lynn’s new attachment to Duffamn. After Duffman attempts to use Lynn as a suicide note\, the two of them build a friendship while he’s in recovery. They agree to embark on a journey together to ensure that this will not happen to any other black boys like Duffman\, suffering from mental health challenges. \nDirector Statement: I lied. When people ask me if this story reflects my life\, I’ve told them “no”—proving the very reason why I think that this project is vital. We don’t talk. This project is indeed a part of me. I wrote this film to shed light on the silence that plagues our communities. I have grappled with internal struggles\, battling suicidal thoughts and questioning the meaning of existence in my own life. However\, through my experiences\, I have become an unexpected voice of reason\, talking individuals out of hard decisions and suicide. This dichotomy has been my silent burden\, one that I’ve concealed for so long. This conversation is deep\, it’s sensitive\, it’s unfamiliar and fragile. Who wants to talk about this shit? No one! Especially in the black community\, and even worse… young black boys. The innumerable emotions and feelings that remain buried inside the minds of young black boys manifest through poor decision-making. Through this project\, I aim to break the stigma and silence surrounding mental health in the black community\, especially among young black boys. I want to foster a space where open\, honest conversations about our experiences\, flaws\, and emotions are not just welcome but celebrated. The character of Duffman Brown is not a reflection of who I am\, but a representation of the collective experiences and struggles within our community. I believe this film is a vital platform to encourage our younger generation to speak up\, to embrace their voices\, and to find strength in their stories. This project is not just an artistic endeavor but a call for growth and understanding.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: How The Women's Liberation Movement Transformed America
DESCRIPTION:The transformative and moving history of the Women’s Liberation Movement has never been more relevant in America. And the newest book by author and journalist\, Clara Bingham\, showcases this critical history in a fresh new way. Her new book\, The Movement\, is the first oral history of the decade (1963-1973) that built the modern feminist movement\, in which the Bay Area played a critical role. Her book brings readers into the rooms of pioneering women who insisted on being treated as first-class citizens and\, in the process\, transformed nearly every aspect of American life. Bingham will discuss her book\, which is already being hailed as both “stunning” and “indispensable.”: In it\, one can read the reflections of Shirley Chisholm\, Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, Gloria Steinem\, Margo Jefferson\, Billie Jean King\, and more as they confronted the legal\, political\, medical\, and economic limitations on women’s lives. Bingham will discuss many of the women in the book who come from across the political and cultural spectrum\, including the Black\, Native American\, Chicana\, and Asian activists who fought for women’s rights within their own social justice movements. Never has this history been so important as now in the final months of the 2024 election. Please join us for this critically important conversion/Speaker: Clara Bingham\, Author.
