SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Tasting Seminar: Rosé & Cheese Pairing - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$90.00\nMember Price:\n$80.00 \nA 90-minute tasting seminar\, served with crackers to cleanse the palate. This class is limited to 24 students and all guests must be at least 21 years of age. See our registration policies here and our rules for in-person events here. \nCelebrate the season’s rosés and the cheeses that love them. This class is made for spring and summer sipping. New rosés are just being released\, it’s light and bright cheese season\, and goat and sheep milk cheeses are in their prime. Think pink and salmon-colored rosé or bubbles\, paired to bright\, freshly-made softies\, and a maybe an aged wedge or two. \nIn this class\, cheese and wine expert Kirstin Jackson will lead you through a delicious tasting of 4 wines and 7 cheeses that will leave you inspired for the season. \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to participate\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nAuthor of It’s Not You\, it’s Brie: Unwrapping America’s Unique Culture of Cheese\, Kirstin Jackson is a cheesemaking teacher\, wine and cheese educator\, and writer. She loves teaching people how to make ricotta and creamy burrata pillows as much as she adores pairing her new favorite local cheese with wine. She blames her parents who took her on trips to the California dairy country at a very young age for feeding her current obsession.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Scientist\, Titan Ups\, MC King Kanashi I\, Mad Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:$25 advance and $30 day of show \nSpotify | Soundcloud | YouTube | Instagram \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nThe Scientist \nHopeton Brown better known as The Scientist and sometimes known as Overton Brown\, from Kingston\, Jamaica was a protégé of King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock)\, one of the originators of dub music. The Scientist burst onto the reggae scene in the early ’70s with a reckless mixing style that seemed to outdo even King Tubby’s wildest extravaganzas. He began his career as an engineer at Tubby’s in the mid ’70s. Shortly afterwards\, he gained a reputation with a distinctive mixing style. \nHe left King Tubby’s studio at the end of the ’70s and became the principal engineer for Channel One Studio\, giving him the chance to work on a 16-track mixing desk rather than the four tracks at Tubby’s. He came to prominence in the early 1980s and produced many albums\, his mixes featuring on many releases in the first part of the decade. He mixed several albums featuring the Roots Radics\, many based on tracks by Barrington Levy. He also did a lot of work for Linval Thompson and Jah Thomas. In 1982 he left Channel One to work at Tuff Gong studio. \nHe made a series of albums in the early 1980s\, with titles themed around Scientist’s fictional achievements in fighting Space Invaders\, Pac-Men\, and Vampires\, and winning the World Cup. The music on these albums was played by Roots Radics\, his most frequent collaborators. \nFive of his songs from the album The Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires were used as the playlist songs on the K-Jah radio station in the 2001 video game Grand Theft Auto 3. \n“In the ’70s\, I started building sound system audio amplifiers. I would then test the amplifier with test instruments to determine how the amplifier was performing. Everything would look normal\, but when I played reggae music through the amplifier\, it would over heat and the plates of the KT88 would run red\, especially when I played a mix from the great King Tubby’s that had subsonic drum and bass frequencies as well as razor sharp high frequencies I would have to re -bias the KT88 and make other changes in order to accommodate reggae’s wide frequency response and high slew rate needs. I noticed when I played other types of music the amplifier would respond normal. I found that to be strange so I used King Tubby’s mixes as a platform to ensure that the amplifiers would not break down under extreme conditions. \nI was fascinated by his exclusive style of mixing and unique sound effects. It was the “Roots of Dub” dub album produced by Bunny Lee that became my favourite test album and also inspired me to want to meet him. One day\, I was repairing a television for a friend who had worked for King Tubby’s\, we needed a transformer and King Tubby’s was the only place who had those particular types of transformers I was so excited to meet this brilliant man and considered myself very lucky to have had this opportunity. After that\, it became a regular place for me to buy special made power and output transformers for the amplifiers that I was building. King Tubby’s became impressed with my electronic skills and abilities at such a young age. I told him I wanted to build a mixing console\, at first\, it sounded like a joke to him we joked about making mixing consoles with moving faders and automation. Years later it became a reality in Neve’s moving faders and SSL’s automation with total recall.”

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Flavors of Andalucía - Online
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$75.00\nMember Price:\n$65.00 \nThis is a live\, interactive\, hands-on cooking class held online via Zoom. See our registration policies here. \nAndalucía is the largest region of Spain\, in the south\, typically known for its olive trees. However\, it’s also the birthplace of cold soups! Cold soups\, like gazpacho\, are generally known as Spanish food\, but they are actually specific to the south due to the hot temperatures\, and locals need a delicious way to cool down! \nWe’ll keep our cool in the Zoom room and make two soup recipes: one traditional\, one modern. Ajoblanco is a medieval recipe that is said to be the original cold soup. Ajoblanco showcases many aspects of the regional cuisine: recycling day-old bread\, using seasonal ingredients\, and originally made with a mortar and pestle\, a medieval technique if ever there was one! Our modern soup is the Cherry Gazpacho\, a twist on the traditional tomato-based soup. It is sure to delight the taste buds! Camila will also discuss some variations on these recipes\, to inspire your future cold soup creations. \nTo round out our vibrant summer lunch\, you’ll also make another Andalusian specialty: Tortillas de Camarones\, or baby shrimp fritters. It’s a traditional Andalusian tapa from the region of Cadiz\, served year-round but especially during Carnival. \nWe can’t think of anything better to eat when the temperatures rise. Stay cool and cook with us! \nMENU \nAjoblanco: Chilled Garlic and Almond Soup \nCherry Gazpacho \nTortillas de Camarones: Baby Shrimp Fritters \nEquipment and Ingredient list can be found here! \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Tree Nuts\, Dairy\, Wheat. Gluten free and dairy free accommodations are available for this menu with advance notice. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nIf you’re new to 18 Reasons Online\, please read this guide: How to Take an Online Class at 18 Reasons. Five calendar days before class\, 18 Reasons may decide to cancel this class if not enough tickets are sold. We will notify registrants by email about cancellations. \nCamila Loew holds a Ph.D. in Humanities and is a certified nutrition consultant. Having lived alongside the Mediterranean for almost two decades\, she believes that the best cooking relies on simple recipes with outstanding ingredients. That’s the Mediterranean way she conveys in her classes\, along with the concept of sobremesa\, which happens to be the name of the company she runs. Sobremesa is the leisurely time we spend gathered around the table. In addition to running Sobremesa Culinary Tours\, through which she offers delicious cultural and culinary experiences abroad for fellow food-lovers\, Camila founded and directs the Food Studies & Gastronomy program at the University of Barcelona\, and teaches academically about Mediterranean food culture to American students abroad. Since 2014\, Camila has been sharing her love of regional Spanish and Mediterranean cuisines at 18 Reasons. For more information visit her website www.sobremesa.life \nPhoto by Camila Loew

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Sean Hayes
DESCRIPTION:$25 advance and $28 day of show \nWebsite | Spotify | YouTube | Instagram \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nSean Hayes \nSean Hayes is a Bay Area singer-songwriter who makes music to dance to or cry to\, or maybe both at the same time. He was born in New York City\, raised in North Carolina\, and honed his earliest musical chops in a band playing Irish and old-time tunes — but his unique style of deeply felt\, R&B-inflected folk really matured during his two decades singing and playing in cafes\, bars\, and night clubs of San Francisco. \nHis voice layers wonder and heartache upon grit and gravel\, sex and soul. His lyrics carry an unpretentious wisdom. He’s dueted with Aimee Mann; been covered by the Be Good Tanyas; and toured with Anais Mitchell (performing songs from Hadestown\, before it was an award-winning Broadway show). His songs have appeared on NPR\, NBC and HBO.

Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”\nClick to make a donation to support this life-saving show\nAbout the Performer \nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. Copeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, opening in November 2013. His first network special\, NOW BRIAN COPELAND will air in NBC in January 2015.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Five Ingredients: Chinese Malaysian - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nIn the “Five Ingredients” series\, our aim is to make Asian recipes accessible to anyone intimidated by unknown ingredients\, a lack of storage\, or a lack of time. In this class\, we will make some comforting dishes from Linda’s Chinese Malaysian repertoire of recipes – simplified to reduce complexity\, but still full in flavor! Many of Malaysia’s Chinese diaspora have roots in Southern China\, including the island of Hainan. Perhaps Hainan’s greatest food export is Hainanese Chicken Rice where perfectly poached silky smooth chicken is balanced by the sauces\, making it a perfect candidate for your weeknight meal rotation. Through this menu\, you’ll learn key chicken butchery techniques\, along with essential cooking techniques like steaming\, stir frying\, cooking rice\, and how to make a few simple (but flavorful!) sauces. \nYou will use a pantry of salt\, sugar\, sesame\, soy sauce\, and a high-heat neutral oil (ex. grapeseed\, rice bran) and add to it no more than 5 other ingredients per recipe. If you’re looking for new weeknight meal ideas or feel overwhelmed by the breadth of Asian pantry ingredients and don’t know where to start\, join us! \nMENU \nChee Cheong Fun – Fresh House Made Rice Noodles with House Hoisin \nHainan Chicken Rice – Poached Chicken and Fragrant Rice\, with Ginger Scallion Sauce and Chili Garlic Sauce \nSalted Fish Bean Sprouts \nSai Mai Lo – Cantaloupe and Sago in Coconut Milk \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Fish\, Soy\, Tree Nuts\, Sesame. SUMMARY:The Chapel: The Clientele
DESCRIPTION:$27 advance and $30 day of show \nWebsite | Spotify | bandcamp | Instagram \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nThe Clientele’s I Am Not There Anymore follows 2017’s Music for the Age of Miracles (which arrived after a seven-year hiatus for the band)\, with new recording sessions beginning in 2019 and continuing piecemeal until 2022 —in part due to the pandemic and also because the band wanted the space to experiment. “We’d always been interested in music other than guitar music\, like for donkey’s years\,” vocalist/lyricist/guitarist Alasdair MacLean says. This time out\, he — alongside bassist James Hornsey and drummer Mark Keen — incorporated elements of post-bop jazz\, contemporary classical and electronic music. According to MacLean\, “None of those things had been able to find their way into our sound other than in the most passing way\, in the faintest imprint.” \nThis stretching out — what MacLean calls “a leap forwards and to the side” — can be heard clearly in “Blue Over Blue\,” with its percussive samples and its moments where the arrangement opens up suddenly into something cinematic in scope\, with horns and strings. \n“What happened with this record was that we bought a computer\,” MacLean explains. Under the old Clientele way of recording\, a tricky song like “Blue Over Blue” might’ve eaten up all their studio time\, as they worked out the time signature and the instrumentation. For I Am Not There Anymore\, though\, the trio would lay down a few tracks and then take them home to play around\, trying out different arrangements before returning to the studio to finish recording all the little instrumental enhancements. \n“Blue Over Blue” depicts MacLean’s scary adventure of being lost in the woods with his son\, he explains: “‘Blue Over Blue’ is about getting lost in the woods on Hampstead Heath on an autumn day with my two-year-old son on my shoulders—he loved it and wanted to play hide and seek. I knew he was a ticking time bomb as I had no food with me and was trying to find my way back to a path.” The accompanying video sees the band adorned in armor beneath beautiful and abstract artwork.\nOver the 32-year career of the pop band The Clientele\, critics and fans have often described their songs with words like “ethereal\,” “shimmering\,” “hazy\,” “pretty” and “fragile.” \nMacLean\, though\, has his own interpretation of the effect his music creates. “It’s that feeling of not being there\,” he says. “What’s really been in all the Clientele records is a sense of not actually inhabiting the moment that your body is in.” \nI Am Not There Anymore regularly evokes what MacLean calls “the feeling of not being real.” A lot of the lyrics were inspired by MacLean’s memories of the early summer in 1997\, when his mother died. Though the album functions as MacLean’s way of mourning\, he notes that he’s not the kind of songwriter who ever sits down with a theme in mind. It’s more that “the music will bring images and then those images link of their own accord.” It’s a general mood he’s chasing with these loosely connected recollections. (For more of MacLean’s impressionistic words\, spend some time with his book Exhaust Fumes\, Magnolias & Light: Selected Lyrics 1997-2021\, published by Edge of the Lane Press.) \nThe result is a 19-track journey that extends from light bossa nova beats to the Clientele’s classic chamber pop\, with Keen’s live drums weaving around programmed drum and bass samples to create something polyrhythmic and avant-garde. Keen is also responsible for the spare and lovely instrumental interstitials that appear throughout the LP — all called “Radials\,” as in “the spokes from the center of the wheel.” \nThey “change the focus in between songs\,” according to MacLean. “Without those tracks\, everything might be a bit too heavy. They make you look away for a little while so you can look back again later.” There’s a similar purpose to the cover image\, taken from the 1823 Kameda Bōsai painting Long Life. It’s both a beautiful piece of abstract art and a poem about\, in MacLean’s words\, “the distance and surprise of getting older.” \nAs MacLean says\, I Am Not There Anymore is all about “the memory of childhood but at the same time the impossibility of truly remembering childhood… or even knowing who or what you are.”

Never fear! Chef Meghna is ready with her tips and tricks so you can easily recreate these breads in your own home! In this class\, you’ll explore the flavors and techniques of North Indian breads and curries through four classic dishes: Saag Lamb\, Matar Paneer\, Poori\, and Tandoori Roti. Chef Meghna will share stories and discuss the regional differences and variations in Indian cuisine while you create an intricate curry base for the Saag lamb\, perfectly balance spices for a well-rounded tomato-based gravy in the Matar Paneer\, knead dough to make chewy and crispy Poori\, and turn the heat up on a cast iron pan as a home kitchen friendly way to cook the Tandoor Roti. \nJoin us to walk away with a deeper understanding of the flavors and techniques of Indian cuisine\, along with the confidence to recreate these dishes (yes\, even the fried Poori) in your own kitchen! \nMENU \nSaag Lamb – Tender Lamb stewed with Onions\, Whole Spices\, and Spinach \nMatar Paneer – Peas and Paneer in a creamy Tomato Sauce with Garam Masala and fresh Ginger. \nTandoori Roti – Whole Wheat Flatbread \nPoori – Fried Unleavened Bread made with Whole Wheat Flour \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nThrough her company\, Crimson Kitchen\, Meghna Agarwal teaches Indian cooking classes\, caters parties\, runs her private chef business\, and occasionally feeds the hungry souls of San Francisco’s numerous startups. When asked about her culinary background\, Meghna notes with a smile that she comes from a culture that has been focused on food for the past five thousand years! With a heritage of food as the epicenter of most occasions\, she is driven to find and replicate the countless traditional tastes of India – from Mumbai’s modern restaurants to the street food of tiny villages. \nMeghna regularly visits India\, where she works with Indian restaurateurs and chefs to keep abreast of their evolving cuisine. Upon return to her San Francisco kitchen\, she infuses the latest trends with ancient traditions and techniques to pass along to her students. Meghna can now be found teaching cooking classes in collaboration with 18 Reasons\, San Francisco Cooking School\, The Civic Kitchen and her own company Crimson Kitchen.
