Following the AIDS crisis\, COVID-19 pandemic \, and the rise of online dating/hookup apps the necessity of a specific neighborhood for the community is not as important. \nThese changes have lead to many wondering what is the future of the Castro? \nHow can we ensure that this neighborhood doesn’t disappear? \nCan the future of the Castro be more inclusive for the LGBTQ community? \nJoin us for a powerful discussion IN the Castro (location TBD) as we unpack what the future holds for this important gayborhood. \nAbout the Speakers \nTerry Asten Bennett: \nTerry is the President of the Castro Merchants Association. Torres has called San Francisco home since 1999 and has worked in the city’s nightlife industry for over two decades. It was through working in the industry that he found community among the thousands of workers who support this great city’s historic\, vibrant\, and diverse nightlife. Like many queer people of color who arrive in San Francisco\, working in restaurants\, bars and clubs was an accessible\, sustainable way to establish and provide for himself in this city that is so close to his heart. \nSupervisor Rafeal Mandelman: \nSupervisor Mandelman represents District 8 on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. District 8 includes the Castro\, Glen Park\, Noe Valley\, Diamond Heights\, Mission Dolores\, and Cole Valley. Supervisor Mandelman is the only LGBTQ member of the Board of Supervisors. \nHe currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Rules Committee and as a member of the Government Audit and Oversight Committee of the Board of Supervisors. He serves as Chair of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority\, and represents San Francisco as a member of the Executive Board and Regional Planning Committee of the Association of Bay Area Governments and as Vice-Chair of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors. As part of the City’s COVID-19 response\, Supervisor Mandelman served on the Economic Recovery Task Force. SUMMARY:Creativity Explored: Eneight Vase (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Eneight Vase brings together works from a number of Creativity Explored’s past and present artists. An inquiry into chance\, repetition and translation\, the exhibition lays its gaze first and foremost on the artistic process. \nThe exhibited works possess a meditative scurry\, a quality of hand brought about through a concentrated and iterative style of mark-making. This technique is employed in various ways by the included artists\, whose uses of recursive marks chronicle their lives\, name objects and experiences\, and represent time and memory. The titular neologism (or a possible alternative spelling of the word “innate”) comes from CE artist Valerie Byrd\, whose often swiftly-applied language within the visual embodies the live and combinatory spirit of this exhibition. \nThe iterative nature of the included works is echoed in the design of the exhibition itself. Eneight Vase began with a core group of 22 artworks selected by teaching artist Laura Figa\, who\, alongside her colleagues\, worked with select studio artists to develop new pieces in response to the first group of artworks. All studio artists at CE were then invited to guide the installation of the exhibition\, translating these works one final time to the physical space of our gallery — a truly participatory experiment in the tune of reprise and chance.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Close to Vermeer
DESCRIPTION:Go behind the scenes of the largest Vermeer exhibition ever mounted\, now on view at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Capturing the imagination of the art world – with glowing reviews\, global publicity\, and tickets sold out through the entirety of its run – the Rijksmuseum’s Vermeer retrospective is nothing short of an historic event. Suzanne Raes’s film follows curators\, conservators\, collectors\, and experts in their joint mission to shine a new light on the elusive Dutch Master. This fascinating documentary reveals everything from the quiet diplomacy required to get the Vermeers to the Netherlands and the new technical knowledge gained by scanning the paintings layer by layer\, to the shocking news that one work may not be by Vermeer after all. In the process\, we discover how Vermeer was able to depict reality so differently from his contemporaries. But above all\, Close to Vermeer shows the infectious love Vermeer’s art inspires. As one curator lovingly puts it: “A good exhibition should change your view of the world. Vermeer can really do that.”

They were detained in a Japanese American incarceration camp\, where Okada’s mother\, May\, wrote letters that are read aloud as part of the score. Through this work\, Okada conveys a deeply personal narrative filled with tales of bleak conditions\, indomitable spirit\, and also love\, humor\, and grace.\n Of May’s Letters Okada says\, “Her letters surface the timely issue of how we cope with the injustices of racism and the confines of imprisonment. While the piece explores the question of how one responds to a national betrayal\, it is ultimately about the power of community that allows each person to find a path to resilience.” \nInterconnected Humanity by Dexandro Montalvo\nDexandro Montalvo’s newest work\, premiering at this year’s Summer Sampler\, is a sextet set to ambient music by film score composer Cliff Martinez. The work\, in Montalvo’s words\, “explores the intricate interplay of human relationships with an eye to the forces that bring people together or cause them to drift apart.” \nC’est frette! by Sonya Delwaide\nSonya Delwaide’s newest work\, premiering at this year’s Summer Sampler\, is a sextet set to Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F minor. “With a playful nod to San Francisco’s famously cold summers\, the piece asks audiences to experience winter in Québec while right in the middle of summer\,” said Delwaide. “Wherever you go\, people love to talk about the weather. In its hardships and unpredictability\, it offers a shared platform for human connection.”

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Earth Mama
DESCRIPTION:Gia is a young mother fighting for her children. Her son and daughter are in foster care\, and now her unborn child could also be taken away. Struggling to work enough hours with court-mandated classes\, she’s barely making ends meet. Gia loves her children unconditionally\, but how will she give them the future they deserve? \nSavanah Leaf’s directorial feature debut is an intimate depiction of a mother’s fear and love. Leaf’s elegant visual language interjects lush visions of hope and visceral manifestations of Gia’s deepest fears into her everyday life. Moving performances root the film in authenticity\, including that of newcomer Tia Nomore\, whose Gia is tender\, conflicted\, and layered. The warm texture of the film envelops us in Gia’s reality\, while a knowing score smiles at the beauty of everyday moments. \nBetween the backdrops of Gia’s counseling classes and portrait studio job\, Leaf crafts a story that redefines perspectives and asks us to bear witness — to vulnerability and the desire to be seen. Leaf’s permeating vision brings fullness and complexity to Gia\, reclaiming her humanity and honoring the different forms love can take. – Sundance. \nWritten & directed by Savanah Leaf. With Tia Nomore\, Erika Alexander\, Doechii\, Sharon Duncan-brewster\, Dominic Fike & Bokeem Woodbine.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Inland Empire
DESCRIPTION:David Lynch’s labyrinthine Hollyweird freakout—his last feature to date—is his most uncompromising creation: a fugue-state trawl through the darkest realms of the subconscious that pushes his straight-from-the-id imagery and sinister dream logic to their extremes. When she accepts a role in a supposedly cursed production\, a movie actor on the verge of a comeback (Laura Dern\, in a fearless performance) finds herself tumbling down a series of increasingly disturbing rabbit holes (complete with literal rabbits) that lead her from the glittering heights of Tinseltown to the depths of human depravity. In his first feature shot on digital video\, Lynch makes visionary use of the medium’s smudged textures and murky chiaroscuro to enhance the hallucinatory\, nightmarish quality of what may be his magnum opus. \nScreening in conjunction with Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentary LYNCH/OZ\, The Wizard of Oz (35mm) and a number of Lynch’s most haunting films as part of this Summer’s You’re Not In Kansas Anymore series.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: New Ways with Chicken on a Weeknight - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nWhat’s for dinner? An especially challenging question on a weeknight\, with the daily grind chipping away at your time and the pressures of assignments looming. Take a step away from these distractions\, with a choice of quick\, simple\, and delicious chicken dishes. To begin\, we will learna new culinary technique AND a vocabulary word\, as we spatchcock a chicken and roast it in under an hour\, slathered with a maple and chipotle glaze\, and scooped up with sweet summer corn and tangy cheddar cheese! Then on to the Italian-American classic:a chicken parm sandwich/sub/wedge/grinder\, crispy and cheese bubblingly hot on top of “killer” garlic bread from Chef Mike’s misspent youth! Finally we will give drumsticks some oven-love\, crisping them up with science and magic in the oven and dipping them into yummy brown butter honey sweet potatoes. And then\, to wrap it all up\, a recipe for leftover chicken salad – because there are lunches coming! \nMENU \nMaple Chipotle Glazed Spatchcocked Chicken on \nCorn and Cheddar Spoonbread \nItalian-American Chicken Parm Sandwich on \nKiller Garlic Bread \nHerby Oven-Fried Chicken Drumsticks on \nHoney Brown Butter Sweet Potato Mash \nLeftover Chicken Salad with Tomatoes\, Avocado\, and Feta Cheese (recipe only) \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: wheat\, dairy\, eggs. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Twilight (1990)
DESCRIPTION:After discovering the murdered body of a young girl deep in a mountainous forest\, a hardened homicide detective pushes himself to increasingly obsessive ends in his quest to catch the serial killer — known only as “The Giant” — responsible for the crime. A much admired but long unavailable masterpiece by influential Hungarian auteur and regular Béla Tarr collaborator György Fehér\, Twilight (Szürkület) is at once an existential murder mystery and an expansive meditation on time and space. Stunningly lensed in rich blacks and cascading grays by DP Miklós Gurbán (Werckmeister Harmonies – Starts 7/7!)\, TWILIGHT’s first-ever U.S. release is being presented in a brand new 4K restoration by the National Film Institute – Hungarian Film Archive and FilmLab\, supervised by Gurbán. \nPart of the Three in the Key of Tarr series. \n1990 / dir: György Fehér / 101 min / New 4K Restoration

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Beginning Beekeeping: The Basics and Focus on Urban Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re already keeping bees or simply curious about what beekeeping involves\, there will be something for you in this class. We’ll cover the basics on bees\, the progress of bees through the seasons\, how to keep bees healthy\, and what to look for at this time of year. We’ll also talk about swarming\, pest management\, and more. \nThe class will also address special concerns of urban beekeeping. Are there city or county restrictions on beekeeping where you live? How can you be the best bee steward possible in an area where bees and people will inevitably meet? \nThe class is designed for beginners so no prerequisite knowledge is required. You will get to see live bees and will most likely be able to get into a bee suit and see the bees in a hive. \nFor your safety\, please wear long sleeves\, long pants\, and closed-toe shoes. \nInstructors: \nMarc Johnson and Pilar Leano completed GFE’s Get Up! (Gardening and Composting Educator Program) in 2010 and have volunteered at the garden ever since. They first put hives at GFE in early 2015 and manage about a dozen hives\, mostly in Western San Francisco. Marc is on the board of the SF Beekeepers Association and volunteers his time and energy to promote urban beekeeping. \nMark Carlson served in El Salvador in the Peace Corps from 2005 to 2007. During that time\, he kept bees as part of his community agriculture extension work. In 2019\, he graduated with the inaugural class of the California Master Beekeeper Program. He is the co-chair and “honey guru” for the Good Food Awards and has been a mead maker for many years. He works and keeps bees in the Bayview. \nCOVID-19 information: \n GFE Mask Guidelines: Masks are optional for vaccinated visitors (workshop participants\, volunteers\, students etc.) and required for unvaccinated individuals. Our staff is fully vaccinated and boosted. Thank you for continuing to keep the garden a safe and open space for everyone!\n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Japanese Temple Cuisine: Shojin Ryori - Online
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$75.00\nMember Price:\n$65.00 \nThis is a live\, interactive\, hands-on cooking class held online via Zoom. See our registration policies here. \nThe essence of Japanese temple cuisine or shojin ryori is about making the most flavor out of the least ingredients. Subtle yet complex in its simplicity\, monks in Japanese temples spend plenty of time mindfully preparing these recipes. Vegan and without overpowering flavors such as garlic or onion\, a meal in a Japanese temple usually consists of soup\, a side\, and rice. In this class\, we will emulate the Japanese monks as we cook together wholeheartedly and prepare this simple meal with care and attention\, to put a smile on the face of those we serve it to\, as we pour the spirit of the earth into every dish. Camila\, who runs culinary tours in Japan through Sobremesa Tours\, will have just returned from a month in Japan doing research. She’s excited to share stories with you! \nMENU \nGoma Dofu—Sesame Tofu\, the king of shojin ryori \nMiso Soup with Silken Tofu \nGinger Rice \nCucumber with Wakame and Peas with Miso Dressing \nEquipment and Ingredient List for the class can be found here; please review before buying a ticket. \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Soy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nIf you’re new to 18 Reasons Online\, please read this guide: How to Take an Online Class at 18 Reasons. Five calendar days before class\, 18 Reasons may decide to cancel this class if not enough tickets are sold. We will notify registrants by email about cancellations. \nCamila Loew holds a Ph.D. in Humanities and is a Certified Nutrition Consultant. Originally from Buenos Aires\, she grew up in California and has lived alongside the Mediterranean for over two decades. She believes that the best cooking relies on simple preparations with outstanding ingredients. Her love for teaching in all formats runs deep: Camila founded and directs Sobremesa Culinary Tours as well as the Food Studies & Gastronomy International Program at the University of Barcelona. Camila has been sharing her love of cooking at 18 Reasons since 2014. Camila’s specialties include regional Spanish and Mediterranean cuisines\, though she has a soft spot for all things Japanese and is an Omotesenke tea practitioner. Her cookbook The Sobremesa Cookbook was published in 2020.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Memento (35mm)
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of the upcoming OPPENHEIMER\, we propose Christopher Nolan’s first certifiable mind-twisting crowdpleaser\, wherein Guy Pearce stars as a man who suffers from anterograde amnesia and is searching for the men who attacked him and raped and killed his wife\, Catherine. The film’s non-linear narrative is presented as two different sequences of scenes interspersed during the film as it follows Leonard Shelby\, who employs an elaborate system of Polaroid photographs\, handwritten notes\, and tattoos to track information he won’t remember. \nAlso starring Carrie-Anne Moss\, Jorja Fox\, and Joe Pantoliano\, this neo-noir mystery psychological thriller is Christopher Nolan’s second feature film and breakthrough that catapulted the writer and director to Hollywood blockbusters with complex storytelling. The United States Library of Congress deemed MEMENTO “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2017. \nThis screening of Memento is co-presented by McEvoy Foundation for the Arts\, in conjunction with their exhibition What are words worth?. Leonard’s unusual relationship to language extends the exhibition’s themes of the power of words to communicate specific information but also act as a symbol for complex emotional experiences.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: After Bergman
DESCRIPTION:A SMALL PROGRAM OF NEW AND CONTEMPORARY SCANDINAVIAN CINEMA. \nImmerse yourself in the mesmerizing world of Scandinavian cinema as we present three thought-provoking films that provide an immediate overview of the dynamic developments in contemporary Scandinavian filmmaking. \nDiscover how the heritage of Dreyer\, the sin of Bergman\, and the morality of von Trier resonate in the cinematic works of today. \nThis screening will give you a glimpse of the festival highlights from Scandinavia over the past four years\, showcasing films that not only delve into the complexities of modern Scandinavian society but also push the boundaries of what is creatively achievable on the big screen. \nThe Roxie presents this program together with producer Claes Hedlund. \nThe program consists of: \nThe Ridge 72 min (SWEDEN) – Director John Skoog \nWon main award on CPH:DOX in 2019. \n”If Tarkovsky had played video games and was a Swedish farmer\, this might be what his films would have looked like.” \nA story composed of fragments of lives lived in the periphery. Based on stories gathered and formed among the people who live in the region\, Ridge turns the setting into the film’s node and main character. But like shadows over the landscape\, some protagonists are distinguished: Beata\, a seasonal worker who comes to Sweden for the first time\, Aaron\, a young man with a broken heart returning to the place where he grew up\, and Billie\, a girl lost in her first summer vacation. As the film follows their lives\, which slowly merge with the landscape\, a map is drawn of the confusion between machines\, people and animals. It becomes clear how they all depend on each other\, in this era where the future is obscured by man’s violent imprint on the planet. \nNest 22 min (ICELAND/DENMARK) – Director Hlynur Pálmason \nPremiered in Berlinale 2022. \nThe director of the fantastic feature films ”Godland” (2023) and ”A White\, White Day” (2020) made this short-film on his backyard during the years of needing to stay home. \nA story of siblings building a tree house together over the course of a year. We experience the beauty and brutality of the seasons\, as we follow them through their struggles and moments of joy. \nWhere to Land 14 min (FINLAND) – Director Sawandi Groskind \nPremiered in Locarno 2020. \nThe beauty of Where to Land lies in the tenuous mystery that is stated at the beginning and never ceases to tint the story. What happens between a woman who has lost her speech and has chosen to take refuge on an island in solitude and a young man who could well be her son?
