SUMMARY:Randall Museum: Paxton Gate at Bug Day!
DESCRIPTION:There are more insects on Earth than there are stars visible in the night sky. More beetles alone than there are species of vertebrates combined. And yet\, somehow\, most of us walk right past them. Bug Day is the one day a year when we stop\, crouch down\, and give these tiny powerhouses the celebration they deserve. Paxton Gate will be there\, offering a rare up-close look at the craft behind preserving insect specimens. \nWe’re heading to the Randall Museum for their annual Bug Day\, and we’re bringing one of our favorite things: in-person insect pinning demonstrations. If you’ve never watched a specimen be carefully mounted and preserved up close\, this is your chance. Our talented Entomology Instructor will walk visitors through the process from start to finish explaining not just the how\, but the why behind each step. We’ll have display specimens on hand\, custom species info sheets\, and beginner pinning kits and frames available for purchase for anyone who leaves wanting to try it at home. If the day sparks something deeper\, we’ll also have information on our hands-on entomology classes back we host throughout the year. \nAnd the rest of the day? Not bad either. \nBug Day is a free\, all-ages event packed with live critters\, hands-on activities\, and some of the Bay Area’s most passionate bug people gathered under one roof. Expect pollinator relay races\, bug costume awards\, arts and crafts in every classroom\, and live music from the Luke Schwartz Trio. Randall bug hats will be available for purchase\, because obviously. \nAlso presenting at Bug Day: SF Zoo · California Native Plant Society · SF Microscopical Society · Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society · Planet Bee Foundation · SF Beekeepers Association · SF Department of Public Health · Alameda County Vector Control · Don Buggito Edible Bugs · Tree Frog Treks · and more \nBug Day is hosted by the Randall Museum. Paxton Gate is a participating presenter. Free admission — no registration required to attend.

SUMMARY:Community Music Center: Respighi\, Italian Serenade\, Madrigals and More!
DESCRIPTION:Join Michael Long (CMC violin faculty) and friends for a casual afternoon of beautiful Italian and Italian-inspired chamber music for strings. The program will open with two duos. Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima’s “Heimat-Terra” is inspired by a text concerning the ozone hole but also civilizations\, cultures\, languages\, sounds\, etc. by the anthropologist Edgar Morin. However the piece follows a more abstract path. \nIn Martinu’s Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola\, the core elements come from Renaissance madrigals\, which had a freedom from conventional forms\, a variety of textures including equal-voices counterpoint\, and rhythm that was free from bar lines. Combining those elements with Eastern European / Bohemian-Moravian folk music themes and dances and the use of the pentatonic scales\, Martinů created a modern version of the madrigal. \nRespighi’s Quartet in D\, composed in 1904 and published in 1921\, is a lush\, Romantic work structured in four movements\, featuring a “Tema con variazioni” slow movement\, a light Intermezzo scherzo\, and a galloping tarantella finale. This early chamber piece reflects his melodic skill prior to his famous orchestral tone poems. \nMichael Long and Aaron Keller\, violins\nCharlie Longtine\, viola\nSung Choi\, cello \nSollima – Heimat-Terra for Violin and Cello\nMartinu – Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola\nRespighi – String Quartet in D \nFree (donations gratefully accepted)

SUMMARY:Public Works: Snakehips presented by PW
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 18th\, 9pm – 2am \nFull Space / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nWant free entry? Check out the PW Union where members get event access\, drinks\, skip the line\, and more: www.publicsf.com/membership \nCurious about more ticket options\, deals\, and ways to party? Check out our website at www.publicsf.com \nSnakehips touch down at Public Works for a night of sleek\, late-night dance music and low-key chaos. The London duo blend R&B\, house\, and pop into the kind of set that starts smooth and ends sweaty. Expect polished grooves\, heavy bass\, and just enough nostalgia to keep your phone in your pocket. Doors open\, good decisions optional. \nSNAKEHIPS BIO: \nSnakehips are a London-based production duo known for turning smooth R&B and house into chart-friendly trouble. Breaking through with the platinum hit “All My Friends\,” they built a reputation for glossy hooks\, club-ready bass\, and collaborations that read like a very well-curated Spotify playlist. \nEqually at home on festival stages and in dark rooms after midnight\, Snakehips blur the line between pop and underground without pretending it’s an accident. Their sets move fast\, hit hard\, and leave just enough melody behind to make the comedown sting.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Cybersentics Book Club April 2026: Sentics - A Predecessor of Affective Computing?
DESCRIPTION:Join us this April at Gray Area’s Cybernetics Book Club. \nThis month\, Cybersentics Book Club discusses the idea that emotions have fixed\, measurable shapes that transcend culture and can be induced through touch alone. Though contested\, Clyne’s theory of sentic shapes casts a long shadow\, most notably informing Rosalind Picard’s work on affective computing. \nThis Month’s Reading: \nClynes\, M. (1976). SUMMARY:Drawing Room ANNEX: threadbare Artist Panel
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITION DATES\nMARCH 21 – APRIL 26\, 2026\nOPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY\, MARCH 21\, 4-9PM\nARTIST PANEL SUNDAY\, APRIL 19\, 3-5PM \nA threadbare idea is one that is weak\, hackneyed\, or stale. This exhibition brings together 5 SF Bay Area quilt artists – Ora Clay\, Joe Cunningham\, Margaret Fabrizio\, Trisha Hickey and Lorraine Woodruff-Long – whose work challenges the threadbare narratives that are now pervasive in our country with respect to immigration\, gender\, free speech\, individual liberty and human rights. These arguments are set forth as the foundation of policies and power grabs that threaten our constitutional rights as Americans. The five quilt artists use imagery\, historical references\, text and complex materials to craft their messages in both subtle and overt ways. The stunning beauty of these quilts is a form of resistance against the very ugly ideas that are tainting our political discourse today. \nThreadbare will feature the Forbidden Words Quilt Project\, an international community quilt project led by Lorraine Woodruff-Long and Trisha Hickey highlighting the 384 words and phrases that have been banned or scrubbed from U.S. government communications as identified by PENAmerica.org. Throughout Fall 2025\, individual quilt blocks featuring the banned words were handmade by over 200 participant contributors representing every state in the U.S. and 6 countries around the world.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: SF Cinematheque presents: Constructions / Destructions / Instructions: The Films of Gordon Matta-Clark
DESCRIPTION:SF Cinematheque presents six films by Gordon Matta-Clark from 1971–1976\, showcasing his radical “building cuts” and experimental interventions that use film to explore boundaries and space. \nProgram introduced by Dylan Adamson & Jessamyn Fiore \nGordon Matta-Clark\, the artist\, urban explorer and “anarchitect” most famous for the “building cuts” he performed on various decomposing structures in the 1970s\, made eighteen short films before his untimely death from cancer in 1978. Aside from enabling “walk throughs” of the buildings Matta-Clark worked with (all of which have since been demolished)\, film provides the ideal venue with which to experience Matta-Clark’s singular artistry: the power of the cut to create strange new juxtapositions\, the epistemological faculty of an opening that introduces light to new planes; metaphorical connections between Matta-Clark’s work and the cinematic apparatus abound. This program collects six of his films completed between 1971 and 1976\, documenting three building cuts\, one site-specific intervention\, one formal experiment and one car crash. In all his work\, Matta-Clark sought to expose the thinness of the boundaries that divide people\, mediums\, spaces and ideas. With sledgehammer\, chainsaw and his own two feet\, he punched through these walls with an urgency that has been increasingly felt in the decades since his passing\, cutting new holes for light to pour in. (Dylan Adamson & Jessamyn Fiore\, program curators) Full screening details here.\nScreening \nFire Child (1971) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 10 minutes.\nFresh Kill (1972) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 13 minutes.\nBingo/Ninths (1974) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 10 minutes.\nSplitting (1974) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 11 minutes.\nConical Intersect (1975) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 19 minutes.\nCity Slivers (1976) by Gordon Matta-Clark; 16mm\, 15 minutes.\nTRT: 78 minutes. \nRelated publication: City Slivers And Fresh Kills: The Films Of Gordon Matta-Clark (Steven Jenkins\, ed)\, published 2004 by San Francisco Cinematheque.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: Tidal Transmissions: Navigation CROSSLUCID with Sayaka Botanic
DESCRIPTION:Tidal Transmissions: Navigation is a live audiovisual work by CROSSLUCID\, centered on T I D E (Tidal Intelligence Data Engine) — a self-evolving ecosystem of AI entities that process real-time oceanic data and adapt how they communicate in response to changing conditions. \nDrawing on Indigenous Pacific navigation practices\, particularly Marshallese stick charts that map wave interference patterns\, the work reimagines orientation not as a fixed position\, but as a dynamic relationship between forces. In this framework\, signals emerge from apparent noise\, and cognition is distributed rather than contained. \nFeaturing a live performance by experimental violinist Sayaka Botanic\, who instrumentalizes her body as the substrate of oceanic data\, her bow tracing the logic of Pacific stick charts through sound\, enacting an embodied wayfinding between ancient piloting traditions and tidal data streams. \nFollowing the performance\, Claire Isabel Webb joins Sylwana Zybura and Tomas C. Toth from CROSSLUCID and Sayaka Botanic for a panel discussion. \nThis event is presented by Future Humans\, a research initiative housed in the Berggruen Institute that examines how ideas of life\, intelligence\, and consciousness are being reshaped in the twenty-first century.

SUMMARY:Community Music Center: The Retraction
DESCRIPTION:A mad woman\, a proto-feminist\, and an icon of Wicca communities\, Isobel Gowdie\, a peasant woman tried for witchcraft in Auldearn\, northeast Scotland\, in 1662\, has been interpreted in many ways since her four lengthy and detailed confessions were re-discovered in 1833. Likely under torture\, she confessed to everything: twenty-seven spells\, carnal dealings with the Devil\, membership in a coven serving him\, meetings with the fairy queen and king\, murder\, animal sacrifices\, and changing into animals. The record of her sentence is lost\, but almost certainly she was put to death with someone named Dawglas\, Janet Breadhead and her husband John Taylor\, and many others implicated in her confession. The Retraction\, framed as a dramatic song cycle for soprano\, three-voice choir\, and mixed ensemble\, serves partly as a timely warning of the perils of irrational thought and unchecked power\, but mainly seeks to give a voice to Isobel—a young woman at the bottom of the social order\, destroyed by the wheels of a brutal and unjust society. \nFeaturing Musicians: Amy Foote\, soprano\, Emilio Peña\, tenor\, Tim Selva\, tenor\, Sideny Chen\, Bass\, Michael Long (CMC Faculty)\, violin\, Jessie Nucho\, flute\, Vicky Ehrlich\, cello\, Keisuke Nakagoshi\, piano. \nMusic and text by Davide Verotta (CMC Piano & Composition Faculty) \nFriday\, April 24 and Saturday\, April 25 at 8pm\nTickets: $25 General Admission; $15 Senior & Students\nPurchase Tickets Here https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1981524169131\nCMC Students\, Faculty and Staff get 50% off advanced tickets using the code CMC-THERETRACTION
