SUMMARY:Public Works: KOKOKO! presented by Public Works & White Crate
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 4th\, 8pm – 12am \nLoft / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nKALW Presents 91.7 FM. \nLINEUP: \n➩ KOKOKO! \n➩ Only Now \n➩ DJ Sep \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nKOKOKO! BIO: \nKOKOKO! Exploded onto the electronic music scene in 2018 and quickly rewrote the usual \nwestern narrative of what electronic music is and\, more importantly\, what “world music” isn’t. \nThe band’s colourful approach\, wild\, uncontrollable sounds and instruments rapidly tore up \nany perception\, pre-condition and performance of an African band of the past. \nKOKOKO! created the DIY instrument spectacle that has since forged a path for other \nbands to follow\, meanwhile KOKOKO! have become more electronic and percussive\, \nthey focus on the nighttime atmospheres of Kinshasa – filled with energy and everything \nfrom the equipment to the sound system pushed to their limit. With amps smoking\, wires \nmelting\, and the crowd losing it. It’s a huge truck coming forward at you..this is the new \nKOKOKO! sound. \nOnly Now Bio: \nOnly Now is the vision of Kush Arora\, based in Berkeley\, CA. His sound is an unremitting emission of razor cut rhythms\, primitive channeling\, and ritualistic electronics. There is wild abandon in his approach; from seething Indian tribalism to cold fronts of ambience that highlight Arora’s ability to juggle disparate sonics. Active in the Bay Area since the late 90’s\, Kush produces in scenes ranging from noise to dancehall as with his recent “Indian Unclassical” series. Arora’s work has been featured on the BBC and in The Wire\, The Quietus\, The Guardian\, FACT\, Resident Advisor\, and Bandcamp Daily. \nOnly Now \n \nInstagram.com/Kusharora \nOnlynow.Bandcamp.com \nKusharora.com \nDJ SEP Bio: \nDJ Sep is a long-time San Francisco Bay Area DJ/producer\, and the founder of Dub Mission\, one of the longest-running Reggae clubs in the world (1996-2019). She has produced more than 1000 shows\, and has performed at many festivals\, clubs\, alternative venues\, museums\, and private events. She spins dub\, reggae\, dancehall\, jungle\, DnB\, and Afrobeats dance music. For 22 years\, Sep was also on Bay Area radio\, first on the legendary college radio station KUSF\, and later on Berkeley’s public radio station\, KPFA. She has spun in London\, Vancouver\, Tijuana\, many cities in the U.S.\, and most clubs in the greater Bay Area. Sep has presented and opened for a long list of reggae and electronic artists (see below); and has performed both solo and as Dub Mission Sound System with various MCs and musicians. \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nWhen you purchase tickets to this event you’ll automatically be signed up for LOCAL 161\, Public Works’ SMS community where you’ll get special invites + guestlist + other perks as a thank you for your support. You’ll receive about 4 messages per month\, message and data rates may apply\, and you can text STOP to cancel at any time.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Art Show Opening: Kat Lopez-White
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the first Friday of the month as we celebrate our new May artist\, Kat Lopez-White! We will have live music\, delicious drinks\, and amazing vibes in the front cafe space so don’t miss out! \nAbout Kat Lopez-White \nKat is a Bay Area-based paper craft and collage artist. Born and raised in Manila\, Philippines\, she always had fascination in manipulating and creating with paper. She remembers growing-up using her dad’s swiss army knife to cut and cooked rice to paste paper dolls because her household never had proper craft scissors or glue. \nWhat started as a pandemic hobby in early 2021 turned into a passion project when Kat found her voice and style of using paper cutting\, collage\, and layering techniques to creatively envision anatomical body parts\, mixed with flora and fauna. \nThis series called: Anatomy of Emotions is inspired by her own parts work therapy\, Floriography – the victorian language of flowers and the hope that Spring brings. \nFor more of Kat’s work\, visit her instagram page: https://instagram.com/rock_papel_cuttings

SUMMARY:MCCLA: Mission Gráfica\, 46 years\, Community\, Culture\, and Politics (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Mission Gráfica\, 46 years\, Community\, Culture\, and Politics\nAn Art Exhibit curated by Juan R. Fuentes\nCurator Assistants: Calixto Robles & MCCLA Curatorial Team\nExhibition Dates: May 5 to June 25\, 2023\nOpening Reception: May 5\, 6pm to 9pm\nClosing Reception: June 25\, 2pm to 5pm \nOver a period of more than four decades\, Mission Gráfica has produced posters on a wide range of political and cultural events. It has made alliances with an astounding array of artists from around the world\, and especially across Latin America\, becoming the most significant political poster center in the San Francisco Bay Area. \nMission Gráfica was created in 1982 through the joint efforts of René Castro\, a political refugee from the coup in Chile\, and Jos Sances\, a Vietnam war draft resistor\, with a base in commercial printing. It was an outgrowth of the MCC Graphics Department\, which had produced artwork at the Mission Cultural Center since 1977. Castro’s brilliant graphic design melded with Sances’ technical mastery to create the expertise and graphic sensibility that came to define a new more aesthetically engaged form of screenprint. \nThe output of over forty years of screenprint posters and prints created at Mission Gráfica is uncountable. Early on poster collector and scholar Michael Rossman estimated that between 1982 and 1986 Mission Gráfica had produced some 500 editions. The Mission Gráfica archive of selected works numbers more than 1\,700 prints. Not included in these figures is the tremendous number of uncollected works and thousands of student works created as part of screenprint classes. \nDuring the 1990s Mission Gráfica was reformulated under the direction of Juan R. Fuentes who emphasized community projects and classes. He created a more open workshop that served artists exploring personal visions as well as political expression. Fuentes began the task of archiving the extensive collection of work that had been set aside at Gráfica. \nFuentes uses his broad knowledge of the archived works at Mission Gráfica to present this exhibition of prints reflecting an enormous variety of styles\, approaches\, and sensibilities. In addition to the principle artists that worked and taught at Mission Gráfica – Jos Sances\, René Castro\, Calixto Robles\, Alexandra Blum\, Juan R. Fuentes – the works of many other artists ranging from non-professional and emerging artists to well-known figures such as Nancy Hom\, Juana Alicia\, Ester Hernandez\, Michael Roman\, Jesus Barraza\, Isaias Mata\, Tirso Araiza and Josefina Jacquin and the San Francisco Print Collective are displayed in dialog with one another across the span of over forty years. \nThis exhibition was curated by Juan R. Fuentes with support from Calixto Robles and MCCLA Curatorial Team. With thanks and appreciation to Martina Ayala and the staff at MCCLA.\nArt Hazelwood\narthurhaz@sonic.net \narthazelwood.com \nCheck out the new book Mission Grafica: Reflections of a Community in Print\nhttps://arthazelwood.com/impresario/publications/mission-grafica-book.html \nClay Water Grass – An adobe wall \n\nJoin us for an incredible evening that honors the legacy of Mission Grafica community printmakers and artists.\nDoors Open: 5:30-6pm\n6pm-7pm:\nScreening of “Strawberry Picker” Documentary film about Juan R. SUMMARY:ATA: Diaries\, notes\, & sketches: Dicky Bahto & Mona Varichon
DESCRIPTION:This program presents recent video works by Dicky Bahto and Mona Varichon that variously utilize diary film making\, found imagery/sounds\, and collaborations with their parents. \nMark Toscano of Los Angeles Filmforum says of Bahto’s films: “His varied and complex engagement with moving image and photographic media is steeped in a deeply felt humanity and empathy\, manifesting through his inspired photographic eye and frequently direct interaction with and appreciation of the material vitality of film and cinema. His films achieve heightened emotional states of great intimacy and poetry\, often channeling the uniquely aleatory qualities of film to carry a sensuality and spirituality hovering in the space between loving depiction and vaporous abstraction.” \nMarion Vasseur Raluy says of Varichon’s: “Her works – whose approach can be compared to that of fan art – are certainly tributes to various personalities that she admires\, from her mother to Assa Traoré. In this alternation between popular public figures and anonymous individuals\, she tries to understand their motivations and desires by revealing their mechanisms of struggle as well as their political opinions. From English to French\, from the private to the public sphere\, or even social networks\, M. Varichon produces video collages that make it possible to ‘make people speak’ and ‘make them hear’ differently. In this way she is reviving a heritage that has partly disappeared: that of beginning with the voices of others rather than her own.”

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Reimagining Community-led Conservation in Kenya
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we transport you to Northern Kenya to learn about the remarkable achievements of the Sarara Foundation across healthcare\, education and enterprise including the heartwarming story of the first indigenous community owned Elephant Sanctuary in Africa\, Reteti. \nSarara Foundation’s Program Director Terri Nderitu\, and Chief Administration Officer Andrew Smiles will share how the foundation’s partnership with the indigenous Samburu of Namunyak Community Conservancy\, that spans 850\,000 acres\, has been successful in preserving biodiversity and building thriving communities – creating a community-centric model of conservation that can serve as a prototype for modern conservation in Africa. \nABOUT THE SARARA FOUNDATION: \nThe Sarara Foundation is working to protect the 850\,000-acre Matthews Forest Range\, located within Namunyak Community Conservancy in Northern Kenya\, the wildlife and the indigenous Samburu who call this land their home. Working in partnership with the Samburu community to preserve their cultural independence\, build economic strength and foster a healthy foundation for the future\, our unique approach to conservation places a thriving indigenous community at the center of the ecosystem. Sarara’s programs cover three thematic areas including\, enterprise development\, a groundbreaking nomadic montessori education program\, and mobile medical unit focused on perinatal healthcare. \nThe Samburu have lived side-by-side with a healthy\, robust environment for generations and in order to navigate a rapidly modernizing world and changing climate we look to their traditional wisdom to ensure the historic wildlife and wild lands of the Matthews Forest Range continue to be preserved. In addition to community led conservation\, the Sarara Foundation is also the primary fiscal sponsor of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Dedicated to rescuing\, rehabilitating and preparing orphaned baby elephants for eventual rewilding\, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the first community owned and operated wildlife sanctuary in Africa. Currently over 42 elephant orphans reside at Reteti being looked after by community members who will eventually assist in their rewilding.

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: After Everything presents Four Songs To Cross The Threshold
DESCRIPTION:“I opened a window and daylight fell on my cheek. I fell to my knees\, immobile\, and wept… I looked at the sea’s horizon\, and saw the world …”\n-Utnapishtim from the epic of Gilgamesh \nAfter a storm so violent it kills the world and frightens the gods\, Utnapishtim sees what remains. Everything he sees is a new and empty world that Gerard Grisey attempts to realize in his piece Four Songs To Cross the Threshold. After Everything presents a concert which explores the themes of death and transition in this piece and others in the program. Death from a place of anxiety\, a place of love\, and a place of sympathy; from the deeply personal death of a friend\, to the powerful loss of an influential but unknown figure\, to the tragic\, long-terms disappearances and deaths of civilizations\, languages\, and worlds. \nJ.S. Bach BWV 60 O Ewigkeit\, du Donnerwort (“Oh Eternity\, You Word of Thunder”) \nDu Yun\, An Empty Garlic\, on text by Rumi \nAmbrose Akinmusire\, The Beauty of Dissolving Portraits \nGerard Grisey\, Four Songs To Cross the Threshold\nAnn Moss\, Soprano\nJessie Nucho\, Flute\nMatthew Cmiel\, Conductor \nSupport ODC\nODC Theater exists to empower and develop innovative artists\, but ticket sales cover just a portion of a show’s total cost. In addition to joining us for our fall programming\, your generous donation provides equitable space access and mentorship opportunities to those artists. It allows us to continue presenting dynamic in-person and virtual experiences to dance lovers everywhere. Make a gift today at odc.dance/support-theater

SUMMARY:ATA: Other Cinema: GOOD PUPPETS
DESCRIPTION:GREER/FACING WEST’s THE ENDLESS END + REINIGER + BICKFORD + \nFollowing up on their first major museum exhibition at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art\, Lydia Greer‘s shadow ensemble brings its “performative installation” up to big-City SF\, for us locals to get a look! In their immersive environment\, shadow puppets play with hand-made silhouettes\, rear-screen projection\, and a multi-dimensional soundscape. Here whole species live and die over the span of a half-hour of looping overlays. This marvelous sculptural environment situates homo sapiens as animals within a larger system\, with humans as the primary predator. Supporting Greer‘s shadow theater is The Art of Lotte Reiniger\, certainly one of her primary inspirations. ALSO: An opening cast call of hand-made mannequins\, including clips from DeeDee Halleck‘s doc on the Bread and Puppet outdoor pageant\, the premiere of Max Mueller‘s uncanny Strange Bedfellows\, a harrowing 10-min. excerpt from Bruce Bickford‘s Prometheus’s Garden\, and the Mission‘s own David Cox with his crafty Puppenhead. The luv-fest is festooned with delightful glimpses of German\, Hungarian and Slovakian puppetry. $10

Even in the midst of this tragedy\, however\, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?)\, indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal\, and ultimately redemptive\, story will reach people who struggle with depression—often called the last stigmatized disease—as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers\, the play\, like so many Marsh stories\, also offers outsiders an insider’s view\, thereby expanding our understanding and\, hopefully\, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly\, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”\nAbout the Performer \nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. In 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. It’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. Copeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, opening in November 2013. His first network special\, NOW BRIAN COPELAND will air in NBC in January 2015.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Beyond Homeless: Finding Hope Documentary Screening + Talk
DESCRIPTION:We have all seen the impact of homelessness here in San Francisco. A lot of people are talking about the issue; but\, those San Franciscans who are directly impacted are often left out of the conversation. \nBeyond Homeless: Finding Hope is a documentary that gives voice to our community’s most vulnerable residents. Manny’s is proud to host a special screening of this film which we hope will in inspire and motivate you to take action to help those affected by homelessness. \nAfter the screening\, we will come together for a thought-provoking conversation about real actionable solutions that can make a real difference. By the end of the evening\, you will leave informed and ready to create real impact. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of the change we want to see in the world. \nBeyond Homeless: Finding Home is a project of the Independent Institute and a production of Emergent Order. Learn more at Beyond Homeless. \nABOUT THE FILM: \nSan Francisco is ground zero for a human tragedy sweeping cities across America. It’s a crisis that has vexed policy makers while it has left thousands of people stripped of their dignity. At the heart of this epidemic are human lives. These are unique individuals\, the majority of whom are suering with addiction and mental illness. Their story needs to be told. An intervention must be staged to save their lives\, save one of America’s most beautiful cities and provide a model of hope for people across the nation. \nOver the past decade\, the number of people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco has risen dramatically by more than 50%\, even as spending by the city and county has skyrocketed by over 130%. These are the numbers of an epidemic that has not been effesctively confronted. \nIn stark contrast\, in San Antonio\, the community has coalesced around a new model of human-centered\, 360 degree care and intervention that has over the same period produced a dramatic\, 80% decrease in its unsheltered homeless population— and\, in the process\, built compassion and understanding feeding continued success. Can San Francisco adapt this model to achieve dramatically different results? \nNow\, the Independent Institute\, based in Oakland California\, together with the Salvation Army are leading a coalition to change the direction of homelessness in the Bay Area and oer the people suering through this crisis\, and those in the greater community\, a way out—and\, in the process\, provide a proof of concept and inspiration for cities across the country to embrace and emulate. \nThrough a mix of interviews with experts and policy makers along with first-hand accounts from people experiencing homelessness as well as those who have successfully escaped it\, this 30-minute documentary takes viewers on an in-depth journey into the homeless crisis and how we can better address it. Beyond Homeless brings a unique mix of academic insight\, human connection and reason for hope to audiences hungry for solutions to one of our country’s most entrenched problems. \nABOUT THE PRODUCER: \nMary Theroux is the producer of Beyond Homeless: Finding Hope. She is currently Chairman and CEO of the Independent Institute\, a non-partisan academic public policy research organization\, and Executive Director of its Beyond Homeless initiative. She is the former chair and currently serves on the boards of the San Francisco and Alameda County Salvation Army Boards.
