Through laughter and tears\, he compares and contrasts trials of single parenting in the 1970s and the dawn of the 21st century as he tries to answer the question…What does it truly mean to be a father?\nAbout the Performer & Creative Team \nBrian Copeland (performer/writer) has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. \nIn 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. \nIt’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. The play is currently in development with Rob Reiner’s Castlerock Entertainment for television. \nCopeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, THE SCION\, and THE GREAT AMERICAN SH*T SHOW with Charlie Varon. \nHe has also appeared in the films THE BUCKET LIST and the Marvel’s VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE. \nDavid Ford (director) has been collaborating on new and unusual theater for three decades and has been associated with The Marsh for most of that time. The San Francisco press has variously called him the solo performer maven\, the monologue maestro\, the dean of solo performance\, and the solo performers’ best friend; a week rarely goes by when residents of the Bay Area can not enjoy one of his productions. Recent work includes Echo Brown’s long-running Black Girls Are Not For Hipsters\, Charlie Varon’s extraordinary collaboration with cellist Joan Jeanrenaud Second Time Around (the latest in Charlie and David’s twenty-five year partnership)\, Geoff Hoyle’s Lear’s Shadow and Geezer\, all of Brian Copeland’s solo shows including the longest running solo show in the Bay Area\, Not A Genuine Black Man. Other work of note includes\, with storyteller-holy-man Ron Jones and Michael Rice\, a mentally disabled performer\, Say Ray. He also worked with Bill Talen on the original creation of Reverend Billy\, the Obie award-winning theater/political action piece. \nDavid’s work has been seen regionally at the Public Theatre\, Second Stage\, St. Clement’s\, Dixon Place\, One Dream Theatre and Theatre for the New City (NY)\, Highways (LA) and Woolly Mammoth (Washington DC).

SUMMARY:ATA: Other Cinema: WAR REFUGEES
DESCRIPTION:THREE MINUTES: A LENGTHENING + SACHS’ ALL ELSE FAILED \nA book release evening that focuses on the victims of war and those who struggle to provide humanitarian care. Dana Sachs is an old neighbor of ours\, who has published some half-dozen books\, and we are honored that we can launch this brand new one with her in person! Her brief reading/Q&A is followed by Elabdi/Graversen‘s Ghosts of Moria\, a finely made doc on a burnt down Syrian refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. Though the hour-plus anchor of the show is the Bay Area debut of Bianca Stigter‘s Three Minutes\, an utterly astonishing filmic achievement—almost a materialistic approach to the medium that stretches out the duration of a single 100′ roll of 16mm to a wide and deep history\, tracing back very many individual human stories. A whole world is revealed through interviews\, narration\, music\, and jaw-dropping post-production—an entire milieu that was surely no more within a year of the 1938 filming. Steve McQueen and Helena Bonham Carter were among the principals who oversaw the “deconstruction” of this home movie\, shot by a Polish-American tourist visiting relatives in East Europe\, just before hostilities broke out. Some 3000 of the town’s inhabitants were Jewish\, and only six survived the War. $8-100\, benefiting Dana‘s Humanity Now.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: The Future of the Transamerica Pyramid
DESCRIPTION:The Transamerica Pyramid is easily the most famous building in San Francisco. Built in 1972\, it has come to define the city’s skyline and its spirit. Some have even said that it’s a metaphor for the city by the Bay. \nCities around the country face huge questions about what to do with their downtowns and office buildings. San Franciso\, and many cities like it\, seem to have more questions than answers when it comes to the future. There are lots of uncertainties around commerical office space\, the impact of WFH and whether offices can make for good housing. \nOne person who isn’t uneasy is real estate developer and new owner of the Transamerica Pyramid\, Michael Shvo. As he said in a Chronicle op-ed\, he’s betting big on San Francisco. His company\, SHVO\, has committed $400 million to transforming the skyscraper and its surrounding neighborhood into a destination filled with beautiful redwoods and unique experiences. \nJoin us for a fireside chat with the Michael to discuss his vision for the Transamerica Pyramid and what it means for the future of San Francisco. \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nABOUT MICHAEL SHVO: \nMichael Shvo is the founder\, Chairman\, and CEO of SHVO\, a leading real estate owner\, investor\, and developer of unique and innovative luxury and landmark properties. SHVO currently oversees a portfolio of more than $8 billion\, including residential\, hospitality\, and commercial space. Michael draws from his diverse background in real estate – from brokerage to marketing and sales to development – to guide his firm in creating and reimagining one-of-a-kind properties at some of the most important and sought-after locations in the world. In the world of luxury real estate\, Michael Shvo represents a rare combination of business acumen and aesthetic sensibility. \nMichael leads the firm’s investment and transaction strategy\, capital markets\, site selection\, design and conceptualization. He anchors a team of some of the world’s most respected investors including pensions funds\, insurance companies\, financial institutions\, and other leading institutional investors\, who share SHVO’s vision of creating extreme value by elevating how people live and work. \nMichael founded SHVO in 2004 and built a reputation for groundbreaking residential lifestyle concepts inspired by\, and frequently in partnership with some of the world’s leading luxury brands. That included collaborations with world-renowned architects\, designers\, and fashion brands\, including Lord Norman Foster\, Peter Marino\, Renzo Piano\, Herzog & de Meuron\, Rafael Vinoly\, Jean-Michel Gathy & Philippe Starck. \nMichael pioneered the marriage of fashion and real estate with Armani Casa at 20 Pine Street\, a concept that continues to be emulated throughout the world. \nMichael also has great passion for art and is known for creatively marrying the art and real estate worlds. In 2013\, SHVO created the renowned public art installation “Sheep Station” in Manhattan\, which transformed an empty former gas station in Chelsea into a whimsical scene of grassy hills and epoxy stone and bronze sheep sculptures by François-Xavier Lalanne. In late 2019\, SHVO opened Les Lalanne at The Raleigh Hotel Gardens in Miami Beach.

Rather than butchering a whole hog for traditional porchetta\, we will do ours in a weeknight-friendly version. Still some butchering\, as we learn to butterfly and roll a pork tenderloin\, then stuff it with porchetta flavors of garlic\, lemon\, and fennel. Wrapping it up in bacon and then roasting it will give us a chance to learn the secrets of roasting meat. Then onto the science of mashed potatoes for the best version ever\, and some produce-butchery as we prep broccoli rabe and even learn how to pronounce the name of this versatile vegetable! \nOur second dish will take us north to Germany. We will take apart a pork butt\, find out why it is located in the shoulder\, and sear it into a stew with apples and cabbage. More apples and cabbages outside the stew as a finishing gesture slaw to top off the dish. Then Chef Mike will teach us how to craft his favorite easy dumplings as we make a delicious pile of spaetzle to serve under our delicious stew. Not a drop to be wasted! \nMENU \nPorchetta-Flavored Pork Tenderloin Wrapped in Bacon\, Mashed Potatoes\, Broccoli Rabe \nPork Shoulder\, Cabbage\, and Apple Stew on Spaetzle \nThis menu contains the following common wheat\, egg\, dairy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Community Dinner: Just for Pun
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$18.00 \nA one-plate dinner with beer and wine available for sale. This is not a cooking class. This seating is limited to 40 guests. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nPop in for April’s Community Dinner\, where our very own Chef Mike and Community Programs Manager\, Elise\, are teaming up to welcome Spring in the only way they know how – with tasty food and terrible jokes. Mike and Elise have been joyfully cooking together since 2017\, creating menus that range from unintentionally burnt oranges\, uncomplicated happy hour bites\, to daily online classes. You may have seen the two of them having a grate time bantering over Zoom while sharing puns and always questioning when the salt went into a recipe. Grab a spot at either seating as we open our doors for you to join in the shared love and respect that Mike and Elise have for our 18 Reasons community and each other. \nNote: this ticket page is for the first seating from 6-7 pm. We do not have reserved seating and dining will take place at communal tables. We also have an option for guests who prefer to take their meal to go: click here to reserve a plate for pick-up only. For our second seating at 7:30 pm\, please click here. \nMENU \nTwice Baked Goat Cheese Souffles \nSalad of Chicories with a Burnt Orange Dressing \nFava Bean Tartine – featuring Peter’s Peck of Pickled Peppers \nPecan Tart with Miso Caramel \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Dairy\, Eggs\, Wheat\, Soy\, Tree Nuts. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to attend\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. Because we are cooking in large batches\, we are very limited in accommodating allergens and dietary restrictions. \nBorn and raised in Colorado\, Elise Hayashi grew up in a family where knowing how to use a paring knife was more important than riding a bicycle. This sparked her passion for food and cooking at an early age\, and she enthusiastically relocated to the Bay Area to pursue a BA in Nutrition Science at UC Berkeley. Outside of the classroom\, Elise helped implement childhood obesity and exercise research with the Nutrition Policy Institute\, and also worked as a pastry assistant to fill her free time with galettes and mousses. After graduation\, she spent time abroad working on an organic farm where she gained an appreciation for the labor and commitment that goes into producing food everyday. Now\, she is excited about being a part of 18 Reasons to merge her gastronomic backgrounds and to share her love of food with the Bay Area community. During the rare moments when she is not eating\, Elise can be found trying out new sports\, playing and listening to live music\, or wandering the aisles of grocery stores and farmers’ markets. \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching\, he tends to his backyard garden\, helps his wife to can and preserve food\, and loves to cook for his friends and family. \nABOUT COMMUNITY DINNER \nOnce a month\, we open our doors to friends new and old\, welcoming all to our share a table and a delicious meal. Every month is something different\, but tickets are always $18 and always tasty. Wine and beer are for sale at the event. Kids welcome!

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Ahead of the Curve: Celebrating Lesbian Visibility
DESCRIPTION:With a fist full of credit cards\, a lucky run at the track\, and a drive to connect her community\, Franco Stevens launched Curve\, the best-selling lesbian magazine ever published. When Franco learns that Curve will fold within the year\, she faces a crisis. She’s been away from the helm for 10 years due to a disabling injury which she kept largely secret. Franco now questions the relevance of the magazine and her own voice in the face of accelerating threats to LGBTQ community. To forge a path forward\, Franco reaches out to women working in today’s queer spaces to understand what’s at stake. Ultimately\, Franco’s story offers inspiration as we face an uncertain future for LGBTQ rights where visibility remains one of our most powerful tools to combat discrimination. \nThis will be a special screening of the film followed by a powerful conversation with those who helped create Curve. To top it all off\, join us at Mother (the newest lesbian bar in SF) afterwards for a fabulous evening of lesbian joy and connections. What more could you ask for! \nManny’s never turns away people due to lack of funds. SUMMARY:SOMArts Cultural Center: Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power
DESCRIPTION:What is power? Who wields it? How can it be owned\, contested\, and exercised? For Asian women whose embodiment of power has culturally been limited to either Dragon Lady\, Lotus Blossom or Tiger Mom\, these questions are ever more prevalent. The true definition of power remains elusive and open to inquiry. \nCurated by Yeu Q Nguyen\, Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander woman agency and resilience in a multitude of manifestations. Jade is a rare mineral imbued with different metaphysical and cultural meanings\, used since prehistoric times to adorn objects associated with power such as ceremonial daggers\, jewelry\, and crowns. Using jade as an allusion to more diverse definitions of power\, the exhibition pays homage to overlooked figures in our history and establishes new legacies of leadership for a more equitable future for AAPI women everywhere. \nPresented by Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) and the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) as part of their 26th annual United States of Asian America Festival: REIMAGINING HORIZONS \nCurator\nYeu Q Nguyen \nExhibiting Artists\nAnh Lee\nAJ Schnettler\nChoppy Oshiro\nIna Kaur\nIS/LAND Asian American Performance Collaborative\nJoanna L. Leading Tones tells the stories that make up Jon Jang’s lifelong pursuit of racial equity and social justice through his chosen “instrument” of musical expression. Influenced profoundly by the revolutionary politics of the Black Arts Movement and the nascent Asian-American Consciousness Movements of the 60s and 70s\, Jang has integrated artistic creativity and community organizing in order to advance messages of resistance and healing in the face of complex challenges of our society from the Reagan/Bush eras to today. Using musical examples\, historical narrative\, and personal reflection\, Leading Tones will provide attendees with a sense of Jon Jang’s shared value and practices. Jang may give a short performance to ground the presentation in how he has engaged with “the work” of change-making. \nThis event will be conducted online via video conferencing. RSVP to receive the link to join\, emailed prior to the start of the discussion. \nAbout the Artist: \nFor four decades\, the trajectory of composer-pianist Jon Jang’s work mirrors the development of a multiracial democratic New American Majority from his unique perspective. Inspired by the music from the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s\, Jang has collaborated with Max Roach in their work SenseUs (1990). “Eleanor Bumpurs” (1993) and “Can’t Stop Cryin’ for America: Black Lives Matter!” (2017) represent Jang’s works in response to the legal lynching of Black Americans. Jang’s Reparations Now! Concerto for Large Ensemble and Taiko (1987) pays tribute to the National Coalition for Redress and Reparations and shouts out a clarion call for reparations for Black Americans. \nJang also explores Chinese American transnational history in works such as The Chinese American Symphony (2007)\, a work that pays tribute to the Chinese immigrant laborers who built the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. Jang\, a grandson of a paper son\, composed “Island: The Immigrant Suite No. 2” for the Kronos Quartet about the Chinese immigrants who were incarcerated on Angel Island in San Francisco during the Chinese Exclusion Act era. \nJang has toured with Max Roach\, James Newton\, David Murray\, Jiebing Chen and Min Xiao-Fen in Europe\, China\, South Africa\, Canada and the United States. \nPeople who are interested in this workshop can dive deeper by exploring private lessons and group classes and ensembles at CMC.
