The company brings together disperate backgrounds in Noh Theater\, Coporeal Mime\, Butoh Dance\, Physical Theater\, and unconventional orchestrations involving acoustic instruments\, sound design and nostalgic wonderment. \nPresented by San Francisco International Arts Festival\nBUY TICKETS https://ci.ovationtix.com/34231/production/1268037 \nShinichi Iova-Koga directs this rumination on being and non-being in collaboration with Dana Iova-Koga\, Jubilith Moore\, Dan Cantrell\, Elke Luyten\, Cass Tunick\, Adria Otte\, Mari Osanai\, Allen Willner and KT Nelson. \nAdditional collaborators include Pamela Z\, Khatchadour Khatchadourian\, Suki O’Kane\, Shahzad Ismaily\, Kaori Yamashita\, Edward Schocker\, Brian Collentine\, Jon Raskin\, Ann Dragich\, Eileen Housteau\, Erin Carper\, Joy Cosculluela\, Mary Parks\, Carla Kihlstedt\, Crow Nishimura\, Joshua Kohl\, Jackson Kao\, Maia\, Elizabeth Pasquale\, Jim Koester and members of EMBODIMENT PROJECT! \ninkBoat Funders: Zellerbach Family Foundation\, New England Foundation for the Arts\, Rainin Foundation\, MAP Fund (supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation\, Howard Gilman Foundation and Mellon Foundation)\, National Endowment for the Arts\, CASH Fund and San Francisco Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Grand Theater: William Basinski with Kelly Moran

A classically trained composer who has worked in experimental media for over 30 years\, from New York City to California\, Basinski uses obsolete technology and analog tape loops to shape haunting\, slow-moving soundscapes that linger on memory\, impermanence\, and the passage of time.

SUMMARY:Verdi Club: The Adam Lee Morgan Jazz Orchestra – Revitalizing The Big Band Works of Mary Lou Williams
DESCRIPTION:Mary Lou Williams was a Pittsburgh-raised jazz pianist and composer who would go on to become one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time\, writing music for Andy Kirk in Kansas City and later Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman\, as well as informally instructing jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Williams’ harmonic and rhythmic ideas\, while chronologically rooted deep in the swing era\, were the foundation on which much of the bebop movement was built. Despite this\, her own name and work is underrepresented in the Jazz Canon. Come and enjoy this music in the manner it was meant to be enjoyed: with dancing; or grab a table and simply enjoy the sounds of the big band! All are welcome. \nAdam Lee-Morgan is a Pittsburgh-Based Jazz Scholar\, professor\, and bandleader. This project: “Revitalizing the Big Band Works of Mary Lou Williams\,” aims to ensure that Williams’ work is presented and passed along to new generations of jazz musicians and fans\, furthering her legacy as a jazz icon. This Project Reconstructs her big band writings from her handwritten notes supplemented by transcription and musical analysis of her writing style. The Adam Lee-Morgan Jazz orchestra features the talents of great jazz musicians from up and down the West Coast and beyond! \nAll proceeds beyond ensuring musicians get a fair wage go to expanding the Revitalizing the Big Band Works of Mary Lou Williams project.

SUMMARY:GLBT History Museum: Queering Urbanism: Insurgent Spaces in the Fight for Justice
DESCRIPTION:$10 admission; Free for GLBT Historical Society Members \nRSVP and reserve tickets here https://glbthistory.ticketing.veevartapp.com/tickets/view/list/queering-urbanism-insurgent-spaces-in-the-fight-for-justice \nIn this reading and conversation\, architectural historian and author Stathis G. Yeros presents Queering Urbanism: Insurgent Spaces in the Fight for Justice\, a book that rethinks cities through the spatial histories of LGBTQ+ communities. \nDrawing on archival research and community narratives\, the book traces how queer people—often excluded from formal planning and policy—have reshaped urban life during the last fifty years by appropriating of everyday\, generic spaces and building informal networks that inform collective resistance. \nWith case studies from San Francisco’s and Oakland’s rich history of queer placemaking\, the discussion will explore the evolution of the Women’s Building of the Bay Area\, the impact of gentrification on LGBTQ communities of color and low-income residents\, and ongoing struggles to preserve queer spaces as sites of radical possibility rather than commodified nostalgia. How have trans women of color\, sex workers\, queer youth\, and other underrepresented groups created community in hostile urban environments? What can we learn from these histories of resistance as cities continue to change? \nThe evening will feature a reading from the book\, followed by conversation about the past\, present\, and future of LGBTQ urban spaces and the communities that have fought to claim them.
