SUMMARY:ODC Theater: Dragons Dance & TWO IN SEVEN BILLION: We Aren’t Alone Here
DESCRIPTION:“We Aren’t Alone Here” is a 2-day event including a dance show and workshops. This show is produced by Dragons Dance\, and it will feature new work and Bay Area premieres by Two In Seven Billion and Dragons Dance. “We Aren’t Alone Here” is a chance to bring physically-driven dance artists together from across the nation to connect with Bay Area dance communities. We can’t wait to share our work with you. \nPhotos by Abigail Hinson and Effy Grey \nSupport ODC\nODC Theater exists to empower and develop innovative artists\, but ticket sales cover just a portion of a show’s total cost. In addition to joining us for our fall programming\, your generous donation provides equitable space access and mentorship opportunities to those artists and allows us to continue presenting dynamic in-person and virtual experiences to dance lovers everywhere. Make a gift today at odc.dance/support-theater. \nRamaytush Ohlone Land Tax Fund Donations\nODC is on the ancestral lands of the Ramaytush People in Yelamu. We pay respects to elders past and present\, who are still here and part of our community. We recognize that regenerative land management is not new\, but is a continuation of practices from Native cultures and from our own ancestors. It is our responsibility to steward the land with care\, as our elders did before us. ODC is donating $.50 for each in-person ticket (seat) sold to all performances in the Theater in 2023. ODC will donate these funds to the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone land tax fund. We encourage you to consider paying land tax donations\, and to learn about the land where you reside by visiting native-land.ca. \nODC Theater is generously supported by Anonymous\, APAP ArtsForward Grants Program\, CalOSBA\, Fleishhacker Foundation\, John and Marcia Goldman Foundation\, Hearst Foundations\, Hellman Foundation\, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation\, Sam Mazza Foundation\, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, National Endowment for the Arts\, San Francisco Grants for the Arts\, U.S. Small Business Administration\, Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation\, and our many individual donors. \nWith any additional questions\, do not hesitate to contact the ODC Box Office at boxoffice@odc.dance. \nAll ticket sales are final.

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Beginning Beekeeping: The Basics and Mid-Season Colony Health
DESCRIPTION:So you’re thinking of becoming a beekeeper? This workshop is an introduction to bees and beekeeping practices whether you’re starting a backyard hive or are just curious about bees. We’ll cover some basics on bees\, their progress through spring and summer\, and what to expect as colonies expand in the warmer\, longer days. There will be a class outline\, suggested reading\, and additional recommendations provided. If weather permits\, students will see the hives close-up. Protective clothing will be provided. \nThe class is designed for absolute beginners so no prerequisite knowledge is required. We will have more beginning beekeeping classes this year\, and each will emphasize what is happening in a beehive throughout the seasons. Keep checking our workshop schedule for more beekeeping workshops! \nInstructors: \nMarc Johnson and Pilar Leano completed GFE’s Get Up! (Gardening and Composting Educator Program) in 2010 and have volunteered at the garden ever since. They first put hives at GFE in early 2015 and manage about a dozen hives\, mostly in Western San Francisco. Marc is on the board of the SF Beekeepers Association and volunteers his time and energy to promote urban beekeeping. \nPaul Koski’s interest in honeybees\, and insects in general\, began as a graduate student when he studied entomology at San Francisco State University and UC Berkeley. He taught high school biology and science classes in San Francisco for many years. After retiring in 2008 he was able to spend more time with honeybees and beekeeping. Paul has tended honeybee hives in San Francisco for more than 20 years and has taught many beekeeping classes for the Garden for the Environment\, San Francisco Beekeepers Association\, community gardens\, and other groups. \nMark Carlson served in El Salvador in the Peace Corps from 2005 to 2007. During that time\, he kept bees as part of his community agriculture extension work. In 2019\, he graduated with the inaugural class of the California Master Beekeeper Program. He is the co-chair and “honey guru” for the Good Food Awards and has been a mead maker for many years. He works and keeps bees in the Bayview. \nCOVID-19 information: \n GFE Mask Guidelines: Masks are optional for vaccinated visitors (workshop participants\, volunteers\, students etc.) and required for unvaccinated individuals. Our staff is fully vaccinated and boosted. Thank you for continuing to keep the garden a safe and open space for everyone!\n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

Centering around the narrative of an extra-terrestrial species living on earth and publicly revealing their true nature for the first time\, this multi-sensory immersive installation turns the lens back on the human condition and the trappings of a life removed from our inherent wisdom.Juicebox Burton and Maya Pen’s collaborative exhibition is a love letter to the aliens among us. \nWe’ve Been Among You draws on stories of creature encounters to celebrate those whose cultural practices\, ways of loving\, and systems of care have always been here holding all of us up. Photographic\, video\, sculptural\, and installation works of these creatures tell the story of a species living in tandem with their planet\, reclaiming what was once lost to ecological devastation. Burton and Pen’s otherworldly visitors point to practices coming from a long legacy of Black and Indigenous cooperation to demonstrate what a culture of true cooperativism could look like. \nJuicebox P. Burton (she/her) is a black\, trans-fem multi-disciplinary artist living in New Orleans. She is a world-builder who frames narratives of trauma in the context of horror and sci-fi in order to heal the collective spirit of the black community. Her work gains its power from its self-taught nature\, fostering the collaboration of other creators of color/Black creators whose collective story combats the aristocratic gatekeeping of the mainstream art industry. In 2017 Juicebox became co-owner of Studio Lalala\, a Black and trans mixed media production company that actively redistributes resources to marginalized folks through the sourcing of shared equipment\, warehouse space\, job opportunities\, and skill sharing\, comprised of storytellers\, cinematographers\, set builders\, and special effects artists and gives jobs to BIPOC queer people. Studio Lalala utilizes a DIY philosophy to collectively produce the visions and voices of their community.https://www.juiceboxpburton.com/ \nMaya Pen Raquel is a self taught artist from the Philadelphia area\, based currently in New Orleans\, LA. She works across various mediums\, including performance art\, special effects\, mask-making and puppetry\, theater creation\, installation arts\, music\, creative writing\, and film. She believes in art as a cheap and accessible expression that can be used to celebrate\, house\, and protect communities in need. Her work is concerned with myth making in relation to tangible and ethereal borders\, a dying earth\, and collective storytelling. She has a strong foundation in collaborative practices grounded in shared vision\, equipment\, educational resources\, space\, opportunities\, and worker ownership.https://www.mayapen.com/

SUMMARY:Red Poppy Art House: OkCello
DESCRIPTION:Collision of classical\, jazz\, EDM\, reggae\, and funk with Live Sound Looping\, Improvisation and Storytelling \nOkCello is inspired by the exploration of African Diasporic melodies and narratives and their intersection with people’s perceptions and assumptions about the classical and European nature of the cello. As well\, his work with improvisation attempts to embody the phenomenon of wordless prayer. \nFeaturing Artists:\nOkorie Johnson – cello \nSaturday\, May 20th\, 2023\nTime: 6:30 pm doors\, 7:00 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $20-30 / (Door) $35 general \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nOkorie “OkCello” Johnson is an American cellist-songwriter whose artistry integrates cello performance\, live-sound-looping\, improvisation\, and storytelling – all culminating in original compositions that collide classical with jazz\, EDM\, reggae\, and funk. \nIn 2021\, Okorie OkCello Johnson was selected to be one of the presenters at the Democratic Republic of the Congo Biennale (Scheduled for September 2022) for his proposal of a sound installation project entitled “Vessel of Breath\,” a meditative cello composition comprised of harvested sound\, collaborative compositions\, and community interviews. In addition\, he was selected to participate in the Kennedy Center’s artist residence program entitled Office Hours (scheduled for March 2022)\, in which he will begin workshopping the process for the sound installation project above. 2021 also saw his inclusion in the InStyle February issue\, which identified him as a member of the “Creative Class Making Atlanta the New Epicenter of American Arts.” He was also identified in Atlanta Magazine’s “Atlanta Rising Creative Class [that] Is Gaining New Recognition on the National Scene.” Finally\, a documentary he scored for the Atlanta Journal Constitution\, “Imperfect Alibi” won a regional Emmy\, he released his third studio project Beacon in September of 2021\, and in December\, he released a holiday album entitled\, An OkChristmas. \nIn 2020 Okorie was commissioned by Flux Projects to create improvisational work entitled “Stir Crazy” directly responding to the isolation that stemmed from the COVID19 quarantines. He then collaborated with visual artist Fahamu Pecou and poet Jon Goode to create a performance art piece entitled HUE+MEN that\, in response to the murders of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor\, asserted through sound\, imagery\, and poetry the sanctity and power of Black humanity. He also went on to be selected by Emory University to participate in its inaugural Arts and Social Justice Fellowship program\, created by the Emory Center for Ethics. In that program\, he and 5 other Atlanta artists were commissioned to create in collaboration with Emory professors and their classes pieces of art that spoke to the racial reckoning that the US experienced that summer. \nIn 2019\, he had the honor of performing at SXSW for Choose ATL and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau\, performing at the Oak Hill Stage of the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, opening for Grammy award winning artist Van Hunt\, being a featured artist on the Story2019 festival at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville\, opening for Grammy award winning recording artist Maxwell at the Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park\, and being invited to perform in Havana\, Cuba at the classical music festival Habana Classica\, which coincided with the 500th birthday of that capital city. \nHe is a recipient of the Alliance Theatre’s 2018 Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab grant\, and a 2018 Creative Loafing Readers’ Choice winner for Best Local Jazz Act. His sophomore album Resolve was named one of ArtsATL’s top local albums of 2018. \nFurthermore\, over his career\, Okorie has had the opportunity to perform and/or record with India.Arie\, De La Soul\, and Big Boi of OutKast\, amongst many others. \nhttps://www.okcello.com \nOkCello

SUMMARY:111 Minna Gallery: Bay Area 5 Sketch Tuesday + Amanda Lynn Benefit
DESCRIPTION:111 Minna Gallery is excited to invite you to our latest art event Sketch Tuesday in conjunction with our Bay Area 5 show on Tuesday May 23rd from 5-9! With dozens of artists including our current exhibiting artists: Max Ehrman (Eon 75)\, Seibot\, Nicole Hayden\, Josh Thurman\, and Messy Beck. \nSketch Tuesday is part of an ongoing tradition at 111 Minna Gallery for over a decade. Originally founded by Sasha Eckes\, then carried on by Brad K Alder for 12 years until Covid created a short hiatus.. \nThe idea of Sketch Tuesday is to bring together artists of various media and career levels under one roof to create work for sale in front of a live audience. Typically – all sales go directly to the artists themselves – but in this case\, all participating artists have come together to support prolific artist and muralist Amanda Lynn who is recovering from a recent injury. \nThis event allows the public to become more familiar with individual artists and artists to become more familiar with other artists – thus opening up networks and intimate art sales at affordable prices. \nFeaturing:\nAmanda Lynn\nIan Ross\nJet Martinez\nD Young V\nFleetwood SF\nHenry Lewis\nBrett Amory\nMicah Lebrun\nDavid Choong Lee\nSteel MSK\nChad Hasegawa\nOptimist Williams\nJohn Casey\nJohn Vochatzer\nEmily Fromm\nLillian Shanahan\nJames Perry\nSeibot\nMessy Beck\nJosh Thurman\nNicole Andrijauskas\nRob “Pengoo” Casanovas\nNora Bruhn\nRalph C. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Tasting Seminar: French Cheese & Wine Pairings - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$90.00\nMember Price:\n$80.00 \nA 90-minute tasting seminar\, served with crackers to cleanse the palate. We highly recommend eating a heavy snack or meal before arriving. This class is limited to 24 students over age 21. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nWith good reason\, French cheese and wine is celebrated as some of the world’s best. They invented triple-cremes and sparkling wine that begs for reasons to celebrate\, after all. But sometimes the region’s offerings can seem a little tricky. In this class\, cheese and wine expert Kirstin Jackson will break down France’s complicated wine labels and specific cheese regions to teach you how to harmoniously enjoy the two together\, à la Française. You’ll learn that the country’s pairings are all about tradition\, regional combinations\, and that once you have the basics down\, pairing is actually quite easy. By the end of the class\, you’ll have the tools to pair at home\, and perhaps more important\, after 4 wines\, and 7 cheeses\, you’ll also be very happy. \nBottles of wines sampled in class will be available for purchase\, so bring a credit card and a bag to take home your favorites. \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Tree Nuts\, Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to participate\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nKirstin Jackson\, author of It’s Not You\, it’s Brie: Unwrapping America’s Unique Culture of Cheese\, is a cheesemaking teacher\, wine and cheese educator\, and writer. She loves teaching people how to make ricotta and creamy burrata pillows as much as she adores pairing her new favorite local cheese with wine. She blames her parents who took her on trips to the California dairy country at a very young age for feeding her current obsession. Kirstin’s specialties include wine and cheese tasting seminars and cheesemaking classes.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Frankie Rose\, SRSQ\, Houses of Heaven\, DJ Omar Perez (popscene)
DESCRIPTION:$20 advance and $25 day of show \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nLove As Projection is the new album by Frankie Rose\, her fifth studio LP and her first since 2017’s Cage Tropical. Frankie Rose has forged an enviable musical legacy\, from playing with bands like Crystal Stilts and The Vivian Girls but on Love As Projection she takes a bold step into electronic pop production. A sumptuous recorded statement\, it dances in ecstasy and broods on the tumult of the western world’s decay in equal proportion. At the heart of the album is glowing\, confident songwriting\, resplendent in hooks and choruses but still touched with an optimism undimmed. \nAfter spending nearly two decades establishing herself across New York and Los Angeles independent music circles\, Rose re-emerges after six years with a fresh form\, aesthetic\, and ethos. Celebrated over the years for her expansive approach to songwriting\, lush atmospherics\, and transcendent vocal melodies and harmonies\, Love As Projection is a reintroduction of her established style through the lens of contemporary electronic pop. Recorded with producer Brandt Gassman and mixed with long-term collaborator Jorge Elbrecht this is the album Frankie Rose has been building up to her entire career.
