SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Golden Thread Productions presents Amreeka: The Comedy Show
DESCRIPTION:Golden Thread Productions Presents\nAmreeka: The Comedy Show \nCurated by Wafaa Bilal \nFriday\, May 12\, 2023\nat 8pm in Brava’s Main Stage \nWith headliner Eman El-Husseini\, featuring Usama Siddiquee\, Jackie Keliiaa and Emcee Charles McBee.\nAmreeka: The Comedy Show was born after the 2016 election\, bringing together diverse comedians with one thing in common: they love to complain. Then and since\, the toxic culture and politics in “Amreeka\,” as some Middle Easterners playfully pronounce it\, offer ample fodder for complaints. This cathartic and witty venting holds a mirror up to reality showing it has become so absurd and surreal\, one must laugh\, if not cry.\nFor Iraqi artist Wafaa Bilal\, the show\, just like his solo works\, “is an artistic platform for creating dialogue and bringing people together on highly charged topics. Not politicizing laughter but laughing at politics as a form of solidarity and resistance.”\nTo learn more about Golden Thread Productions\, click here https://goldenthread.org/ \nTICKETS\n$20-$100\nGeneral admission tickets available at a sliding scale.

SUMMARY:Dance Mission Theater: When Eyes Speak South Asian Choreography Festival: Ghadar Geet
DESCRIPTION:When Eyes Speak\, SF’s First South Asian Choreography Festival \npresents \nBarnali Ghosh and Anirvan Chatterjee’s Radical History Walking Tour \nwith \n“Ghadar Geet: Blood and Ink” by Joti Singh and Duniya Dance and Drum Company. \nWhen Eyes Speak presents a historic collaboration between Duniya Dance & Drum and Berkeley South Asian Radical History Walking Tour. This year’s theme\, “Space\, Place\, and Ancestry\,” pays homage to the vastness of the term choreography within the South Asian diaspora\, and especially #ghadarinthemission. The Radical History Walking Tour of the Mission helps locate the featured performance by traversing audiences through the spaces we have and continue to occupy\, identifying the deep\, radical\, and sometimes painful histories of South Asians here in San Francisco. The tour is led by Barnali Ghosh and Anirvan Chatterjee who are renowned for their venture of a similar name in Berkeley. Following the tour\, Duniya Dance and Drum performs Ghadar Geet created by Artistic Director Joti Singh\, who undertakes the personal journey of tracing her great grandfather’s own radical South Asian history here in the Bay Area as part of the Ghadar party\, which opposed the British occupation of India. \nNote: We have a YOUTH/STUDENT/FINANCIAL HARDSHIP discount code: dancehistory \nSORRY\, WE ARE SOLD OUT OF WALKING TOUR TICKETS. \nAND TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR THE GHADAR GEET DANCE PERFORMANCE\, WHERE JOTI SINGH’S (WITH DUNIYA DANCE AND DRUM CO.) SUMMARY:Luna Rienne Gallery: The Thin Places by Chris Stokes (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:Luna Rienne Gallery is pleased to present The Thin Places\, a solo exhibition featuring San Francisco artist Chris Stokes. \nThe Thin Places is a collection of works that examines the porous veil between two existences — heaven and earth\, light and dark\, this world and the other. Crossing the veil shifts the delicate equilibrium of light\, life\, and color\, which are pushed and pulled into each landscape. When the veil returns\, it releases these elements to be reclaimed by its previous existence. Stokes addresses this tenuous relationship and the resulting effects of the tension. \nIn addition to his solo exhibition\, Luna Rienne Gallery will be launching the crowdfunding campaign for their new parklet\, designed by Stokes. \nChris Stokes uses mixed media to interlace and layer unassuming combinations of color\, lines and found materials. Elements from literature\, cultural symbols\, and architecture meld together to become art that equals more than the sum of its parts. Born in Philadelphia\, the long-time San Francisco resident’s work is a reflection of his travels\, his ever-evolving perspective of the world\, and an interest in science fiction. The resulting pieces represent new landscapes and structures that seem barely possible. \nThe Thin Places will be on exhibit from May 13 through June 11\, 2023 at Luna Rienne Gallery\, 3318 22nd Street near Valencia in San Francisco\, which features visual artists working in contemporary mediums who integrate elements of urban culture with traditional techniques. The opening reception will be held on Saturday\, May 13\, from 6PM until 9PM.

SUMMARY:Herbst Theatre: Theatre Flamenco of SF presents: Transitar por un Mundo sin Tiempo (Passage through a Timeless World)
DESCRIPTION:Tickets ($25-55): CityBoxOffice.com/TheatreFlamenco \nTheatre Flamenco of San Francisco\, the Bay Area’s oldest flamenco dance company (having been founded in 1966)\, brings audiences an explosive music and dance experience in its 57th home season production\, Transitar por un Mundo sin Tiempo (Passage through a Timeless World). \nIn the company’s joyous return after three years of the pandemic\, Artistic Director\, Carola Zertuche\, fuses flamenco with live electronic music\, violin\, and electric guitar. World-renowned Spanish guitarist\, Juani De La Isla\, will lead the musical journey. De La Isla is a highly respected flamenco guitarist from the island of San Fernando near the port city of Cádiz\, in Andalusia in southwestern Spain. Renowned Spanish musician Diego Amador\, Hijo will be bringing his vocal and piano stylings to the ensemble. Amador hails from a long line of Gypsy flamenco artists who have expanded their reach into rock\, jazz\, and other forms of world music\, launching the world-famous flamenco band Pata Negra.\nAdrian Santana\, a flamenco dancer from Malaga\, will join Zertuche on stage. This will be Santana’s debut with the company and his first time performing in San Francisco. Santana comes from a family of flamenco artists\, including his uncle\, Pepito Vargas\, a well-known dancer who passed down his knowledge to his nephew. Making his debut with the company is California-based electronic musician\, Pascual Martinez. Come travel the world through Transitar por un Mundo sin Tiempo!\nThis show is inspired by a trip Zertuche took to Jordan in 2021\, during a time of many Covid restrictions. She says “visiting the Wadi Rum Desert\, especially\, was one of the most incredible experiences of my life: peaceful energy surrounded me like an inexplicable force.I felt the sensation —with the light\, the endless red sand\, the stars clear in the night sky — that time had ceased to exist\, that everything was perfect\, that anything could happen. Flamenco\, to me\, also has that inexplicable energy\, and I’d like the audience to feel those same emotions\, even if just for the hour and 15 minutes of the show.”

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Are Tiny Homes the Answer to Homelessness?
DESCRIPTION:Could the solution to San Francisco’s homelessness crisis be 64 square foot cabins dotting empty lots and spaces around the city? \nOakland and San Jose are just some of the Bay Area communities that have built tiny home villages to provide short term housing for their neediest residents. Advocates site the need for both bold temporary housing solutions and longer term permanent housing for the region’s homeless. Tiny homes seem to fit that bill. Unless you’re in San Francisco. \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? SUMMARY:Manny’s: Restoring the City: Reparations and the Future of San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco created the African American Reparations Advisory Committee (SFAARAC) in 2020 and tasked it with developing a Reparations Plan to address the city sanctioned harm that has been inflicted on San Francisco’s African American communities. \nAt the core of the Committee’s work is a fundamental question: can San Franciso heal communities undermined by years of racism and institutional neglect? In other words\, can the city make its Black community whole and what will that mean for the rest of San Francisco? \nSFAARAC has focused its work on education\, housing\, policy and economic empowerment. After more than a year of research\, study and public comment\, the Committee released a draft Reparations Plan and the world took notice. \nThe Plan includes more than 50 recommendations including direct compensation\, educational support\, and reimagining some of downtown’s empty commercial spaces. \nWe have invited SFAARAC Chair Eric McDonnell and Vice-Chair Tinisch Hollins to our living room to talk about their hometown\, reparations\, history and the way forward for San Francisco and its Black residents. Join us for this necessary conversation. \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nABOUT OUR PANELISTS: \nTinisch Hollins \nA crime survivor and a native of San Francisco from Bayview Hunters Point\, Tinisch is the Executive Director of Californians for Safety and Justice\, the cofounder of SF Black Wall Street and the Vice Chair of the San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee. \nHer leadership helped to pass historic first-in-the-nation legislation that extended employment leave for all survivors of violence\, as well as legislation permitting crime victims to terminate their leases if they no longer feel safe in their homes following a crime. Tinisch also played a pivotal leadership role in the defeat of Proposition 20\, a regressive ballot measure on the 2020 California ballot that sought to repeal numerous successful criminal justice reforms. \nShe has been deeply engaged in the Bay Area social justice movement as the community organizer\, policy advocate and systems navigator for nearly two decades. Tinisch has worked passionately to bring the voices of survivors to the center of community engagement and public policy and has advocated tirelessly for those voices to guide decisions\, priorities\, and resources. Across her work\, Tinisch brings underrepresented Black voices into decision-making processes and redirects priorities\, power\, and resources back to our community. Prior to joining CSJ in 2019\, Tinisch served in various leadership capacities in local government\, including at the San Francisco Human Services Agency and in the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. \nEric McDonnell \nEric McDonnell is a people-first advocate\, strategist\, diversity trainer\, executive coach\, and keynote speaker in pursuit of positive impact in the world. Eric provides strategic management consulting support to leaders and organizations in the nonprofit\, government\, philanthropic\, and private sectors. Eric holds a BA in public administration from the University of San Francisco and is a Certified Life Coach. A native San Franciscan\, Eric and his family live in the Bayview neighborhood\, and he enjoys live music and cycling. \nEric has over 30yrs of leadership experience\, transforming organizations and communities\, creating impact. In addition to holding Executive positions in change agencies\, in his consulting practice he has supported Board development\, strategic planning\, executive leadership\, and program sustainability. The common theme and focus for Eric has been to work with mission aligned people and organizations to make a positive impact in the world. \nABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO AFRICAN AMERICAN REPARATIONS ADVISORY COMMITTEE \nThe San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee is a 15 member body legislatively established by Supervisor Shamann Walton to advise the San Francisco Board of Supervisors\, Mayor\, Human Rights Commission and the public on the development of a San Francisco-specific Reparations Plan that chronicles the legacy of American chattel slavery\, post-Civil War government-sanctioned discrimination against African Americans\, and ongoing institutional discrimination that has adversely impacted the lives of Black San Franciscans.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Biryani Master Class - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nBiryani is a classic South Asian dish that combines fragrant rice with savory meat\, vegetables\, and spices. It is a crowd-pleaser that is perfect for special occasions and family dinners alike. \nBiryani preparation is deceptively technical – making fluffy rice that emerges as individual grains\, dry between moist layers of meat\, is an art form. Meghna will make you feel confident with the techniques needed to achieve the complex biryani flavor: roasting whole spices\, caramelizing onions\, and pre-cooking rice to an intimidating 70% doneness. \nIn this master class\, you’ll learn two delicious biryani recipes – chicken biryani and vegetable biryani – along with two classic side sauces to infuse your meal with a final bit of flavor – cucumber raita and cilantro mint chutney. And to drink\, you’ll make a refreshing mango lassi! \nMENU \nChicken Biryani—Layered rice with fried onions\, marinated chicken with cashews and yogurt\, saffron rice \nVegetable Biryani—Layered rice with fried onions\, beans\, cauliflower\, carrots\, peas\, and nuts \nCucumber Raita—A cooling yogurt and cucumber dip \nCilantro Mint Chutney—A fiery and bright cilantro and mint sauce \nMango Lassi—A refreshing sweet yogurt and mango drink \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Tree Nuts\, Dairy. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nThrough her company\, Crimson Kitchen\, Meghna Agarwal teaches Indian cooking classes\, caters parties\, runs her private chef business\, and occasionally feeds the hungry souls of San Francisco’s numerous startups. When asked about her culinary background\, Meghna notes with a smile that she comes from a culture that has been focused on food for the past five thousand years! With a heritage of food as the epicenter of most occasions\, she is driven to find and replicate the countless traditional tastes of India – from Mumbai’s modern restaurants to the street food of tiny villages. \nMeghna regularly visits India\, where she works with Indian restaurateurs and chefs to keep abreast of their evolving cuisine. Upon return to her San Francisco kitchen\, she infuses the latest trends with ancient traditions and techniques to pass along to her students. Meghna can now be found teaching cooking classes in collaboration with 18 Reasons\, San Francisco Cooking School\, The Civic Kitchen and her own company Crimson Kitchen. You can find more information on her at www.crimsonkitchen.com or follow her food journey on instagram @crimsonkitchen.

Protective clothing will be provided. \nThe class is designed for absolute beginners so no prerequisite knowledge is required. We will have more beginning beekeeping classes this year\, and each will emphasize what is happening in a beehive throughout the seasons. Keep checking our workshop schedule for more beekeeping workshops! \nInstructors: \nMarc Johnson and Pilar Leano completed GFE’s Get Up! (Gardening and Composting Educator Program) in 2010 and have volunteered at the garden ever since. They first put hives at GFE in early 2015 and manage about a dozen hives\, mostly in Western San Francisco. Marc is on the board of the SF Beekeepers Association and volunteers his time and energy to promote urban beekeeping. \nPaul Koski’s interest in honeybees\, and insects in general\, began as a graduate student when he studied entomology at San Francisco State University and UC Berkeley. He taught high school biology and science classes in San Francisco for many years. After retiring in 2008 he was able to spend more time with honeybees and beekeeping. Paul has tended honeybee hives in San Francisco for more than 20 years and has taught many beekeeping classes for the Garden for the Environment\, San Francisco Beekeepers Association\, community gardens\, and other groups. \nMark Carlson served in El Salvador in the Peace Corps from 2005 to 2007. During that time\, he kept bees as part of his community agriculture extension work. In 2019\, he graduated with the inaugural class of the California Master Beekeeper Program. He is the co-chair and “honey guru” for the Good Food Awards and has been a mead maker for many years. He works and keeps bees in the Bayview. \nCOVID-19 information: \n GFE Mask Guidelines: Masks are optional for vaccinated visitors (workshop participants\, volunteers\, students etc.) and required for unvaccinated individuals. Our staff is fully vaccinated and boosted. Thank you for continuing to keep the garden a safe and open space for everyone!\n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.
