SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Chicken - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Chicken teaches preparation techniques for this most-popular protein – and the recipes for two complete chicken-centric meals. \nFirst we’ll make a chicken stew “grandmother-style”: lovingly garnished with mushrooms\, pearl onions\, and bacon. For this recipe\, Chef Mike will teach you the art of braising to get tender\, melt-in-your-mouth chicken. You’ll also learn to work with offal – intimidating entrails – by transforming chicken livers into a smooth pâté that you’ll spread on bread for dipping. Round out the meal with a creamy base of polenta to sop up every spoonful of tasty braise. \nNext we’ll make a fried chicken and biscuit sandwich – perfect for a special brunch or dinner! We’ll start by pan frying a crispy chicken thigh\, and then to make it extra crispy\, we’ll fry it again. Bake up a tray of homemade biscuits\, then give your sandwich a fiery drizzle of duck fat and hot sauce – and don’t forget the side of homemade pickles. A celebration of chicken! \nMENU \n“Grandmother Style” Braised Chicken Thigh with Bacon\, Onions\, and Mushrooms\, Chicken Liver Crostini; Creamy Polenta \nTwice Fried Kentucky Hot Chicken\, Hot Sauce Drizzle\, Biscuit\, Pickles \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: wheat\, dairy\, egg. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:Z Space: Word for Word present: Home by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:April 5-29 at Z Below \nThe story of Mikey\, a war veteran returning to a home that is increasingly cruel and absurd—and his quest for understanding and compassion. George Saunders’ subtle yet absurdist humor brings a unique slant to otherwise dark topics. \nOf “Home”\, George Saunders says\, “If you send four hundred thousand people into a shitstorm\, don’t expect everybody to come back smelling like roses. Some of them are going to come back damaged. To show ourselves to be an honorable culture\, we have to step up and deal with them with all the generosity and love we can summon\, or shame on us.” \nWord for Word has a long history of adapting Saunders’ work\, going back to 2017 when they performed a staged reading of a section from his novel Lincoln in the Bardo at both the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. Saunders both attended and performed in both readings. Duly impressed by their signature style of using the entire text of a work in realizing a dramatic adaptation of a piece\, he has graciously lent his permission for Word for Word to use his work in subsequent productions\, and has often participated in post-show conversations. Most recently his short story “Victory Lap” was given a full production treatment in Word for Word’s 25th Anniversary Show (2018).

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Thelonious Monk: Rewind & Play
DESCRIPTION:In December 1969\, legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk ended his European concert tour with a performance at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Before the show\, he was invited to appear on a French television program to perform and answer questions in an intimate setting. Using newly discovered footage from this recording\, director Alain Gomis (FÉLICITÉ) reveals the disconnect between Monk and his interviewer\, Henri Renaud\, whose unwittingly trivializing approach conveys the casual racism and exploitation prevalent in the music industry at large. A fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary with extraordinary rarely-seen performances\, REWIND & PLAY offers a unique opportunity to see Monk in a way that very few people did.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Enys Men
DESCRIPTION:A Pre-recorded Q&A with BAFTA-winning director Mark Jenkin\nimmediately follows the film. \n“The writer-director’s use of colour 16mm\, his (now-famous) 1970s Bolex clockwork camera\, and post-production sound anoint Enys Men as the Kernowek equivalent of such classic English folk horrors as The Wicker Man.” ~ Tara Brady\, Irish Times \n“Are its cultish mysteries for everyone? Undoubtedly not. But if there’s a place in your heart for dark\, folky mind-benders that plug into the cosmic energy of remote\, oceanic terrain\, you should take a trip across Jenkin’s freaky landscape asap.” ~ Philip De Semlyen\, Time Out \nA wildlife volunteer on an uninhabited island off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace\, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.’s most exciting and singular filmmakers.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$145.00\nMember Price:\n$135.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class. Alongside the tasting of baked goods\, a seasonal salad\, cheese\, veggies\, and dips will be served with wine or beer. Bring a sealable container to bring home leftover slices of the baked goods (in case we don’t eat it all!). This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nAre you in search of the perfect cookie? \nThe perfect cookie defies easy definition. In this class\, Jennifer will teach you the science of cookies by using one chocolate chip cookie recipe. Together\, we’ll examine the science behind creaming butter and sugar\, the use of baking soda versus baking powder\, different sugars\, and high and low temperature baking. \nAs a result\, you’ll leave knowing how to adjust a recipe to bake your way to a perfect cookie! \nMENU \nA Lot of Chocolate Chip Cookies \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Egg\, Soy\, Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nJennifer Altman began her culinary journey at age eight\, baking and cooking for her family and friends. After a career in science\, she followed her passion to become a pastry chef. She loves anything to do with food—cooking\, gardening\, recipe development\, and especially teaching. In a nod to many of her students’ baking anxieties\, Jennifer demystifies the process by teaching baking fundamentals\, allowing her students to return home with the confidence to create their own masterpieces. Jennifer’s specialties include baking and desserts.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Return to Seoul
DESCRIPTION:In Davy Chou’s dazzling second narrative feature\, a mercurial 25-year-old — born in South Korea and raised in France by adoptive parents — returns to her motherland in search of answers. \nBorn in South Korea and raised in France by adoptive parents\, Frédérique Benoît\, a.k.a. Freddie (Ji-min Park)\, is an arrogant\, mercurial\, and unyielding 25-year-old in search of answers. Unfamiliar with her native language or the intricacies of Korean culture\, she spontaneously travels “home” — there’s no place like it — after being rerouted by a typhoon. There\, she befriends a hotel employee named Tena (Guka Han)\, who sets her on the path to finding her biological parents and unearthing her origin story. While her mother remains a mystery\, Freddie successfully confronts her eager father (Kwang-rok Oh). But much is lost in translation and her impetuous journey leaves her already heavy baggage packed with more questions than answers. As Thomas Wolfe once wrote\, “You can’t go home again\,” and it’s not long before Freddie — still recognizable\, though with her foundations fully transformed and wanderlust as her North Star — is back in her motherland constructing another house of cards.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Menergy: The Sound of Gay Liberation in San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Menergy tells the story of the “postdisco” recording industry in San Francisco between 1978 and 1984. For most of America\, disco died in 1979. Gay people\, however\, continued to dance\, and in the Castro enterprising gay DJs\, record producers\, and musicians started their own small dance music record labels to make up for the lack of new\, danceable music.\nThe sound derived its aesthetic from San Francisco’s unique queer configuration of elements\, but immediately this music had a reach far beyond the Bay Area\, with Megatone Records\, Moby Dick Records\, and other labels achieving worldwide success with San Francisco artists such as Sylvester\, Patrick Cowley\, Lisa\, and Boys Town Gang creating the world’s first gay-owned\, gay-produced music for a dancing audience.\nBring your dancing shoes and join us for this fabulous conversation! Get in the mood with the Menergy! A Gay San Francisco Sound Playlist.\nManny’s never turns away people due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the word “grapefruit” and the title of the event to angelina@welcometomannys.com.\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nLouis Niebur is Professor of Musicology at the University of Nevada\, Reno. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California\, Los Angeles. His research areas include the significance of music to LGBTQ communities as it has shifted between live music\, the jukebox\, and the disc jockey in the context of queer spaces. He has delivered and published papers on such topics as San Francisco’s proto-queercore scene\, the history of Camp Records and other gay recording labels of the 1960s\, and the queer function of electronic sound production in electronic dance music. His most recent book\, Menergy: San Francisco’s Gay Disco Sound (Oxford University Press\, 2022)\, traces the way disco and high energy dance music channeled the spirit of gay liberation through a shared dancefloor experience.

DESCRIPTION:Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-17th-annual-cubacaribe-festival-of-dance-music-reuniongathering-tickets-485647533847\nA mixed program with performances by: Alafia Dance Ensemble\, Los Lupeños de San José\, Agua Doce Dance\, Cuicacalli\, Embodiment Project\, La Unión Matancera\, Batey Tambó\nSeven local and visiting dance companies will create original choreography rooted in the Caribbean and its Diaspora based on the curatorial vision. Gathering is either a noun or a verb\, something we do or is done. After the last few years in a global pandemic\, we recognize the importance of physically coming together. The isolation and reuniting after has taken many forms. We will reflect on our individual and shared experiences and resilience. Dance\, music and art proved more important than ever; they enabled a way to communally gather\, to be a part of something larger than ourselves and to share\, a way to express emotional struggles and joys and serves as freedom for individuals\, cultures and communities. This is true now and has been true throughout history.

I have always been a fan of any electronic sound since my early ages\, more and more into house and techno as I grew. In 2009 I borrowed my friend’s 1200’s and fell in love with mixing. SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Millennium Actress
DESCRIPTION:“A piece of cinematic art. It’s modern day Japanese animation at its best.”Kevin Williams\, Chicago Tribune \nBased loosely on the life and work of Ozu muse Hara Setsuko\, Satoshi Kon’s stunning sophomore feature is a kaleidoscopic\, time-skipping portrait of a reclusive actor looking back on her career. The clever meta-movie follows a two-man documentary crew as they set about interviewing Fujiwara Chiyoko\, a former studio star who withdrew from public life after retiring decades earlier. Her story transports the pair through a century of Japanese cinema and history\, as past and present\, memories and movie roles\, start to blur. Kon co-wrote the script with Perfect Blue screenwriter Murai Sadayuki; as in that film\, the boundaries between inner and outer realities are erased—albeit here in a more fanciful\, less maniacal manner! Musician Hirasawa Susumu\, long admired by Kon\, wrote the electronic score. The film garnered much acclaim and shared (with Miyazaki’s Spirited Away) the prestigious Japan Media Arts prize for animation. \nMILLENNIUM ACTRESS also plays on Monday\, April 10 with PERFECT BLUE . See both for $17 or either for $14. Details here.
