SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Basic Knife Skills - In Person

Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nJoin 18 Reasons Chef and Culinary Instructor\, Mike Weller\, for a class in the basics of using your chef’s knife at home. We will discuss the ins and outs of knife use\, care and safety. You will walk away knowing how to maintain a sharp edge and the best way to cut vegetables and herbs. This is a great class for beginners. \nThis class includes our Knife Skills manual for reference when cooking at home. The vegetables cut in this class will be used by each student to create their own individual salad\, with a shared buffet of vinaigrette\, fried shallots\, minced chili\, roasted peanuts\, and optional roast chicken meat to garnish. Wine\, beer and bread will also be served. \nIf you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Os Mutantes\, Rogê
DESCRIPTION:$43 advance and $48 day of show \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nOs Mutantes (“The Mutants”) are an influential Brazilian psychedelic rock band that were linked with the Tropicália movement of the late 1960s. When Os Mutantes was formed\, it combined influences from psychedelic acts from the English-speaking world like The Beatles\, Jimi Hendrix\, and Sly & the Family Stone with bossa nova\, tropicália\, samba and the cultural legacy of the Brazilian art vanguards from the modernist movement. \nOne of the most well-known and influential rock bands in Brazil\, Os Mutantes are cited as a major influence to many contemporary underground or independent bands in the United States and Europe. Beck paid tribute to the group with his single “Tropicália” from the album Mutations. The Bees (UK band) covered “A Minha Menina” on their first album\, Sunshine Hit Me. Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea has stated on his Twitter account that he is a fan. Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal cites Os Mutantes as an important influence. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has worked to publish and promote the group’s music through his Luaka Bop label. Kurt Cobain publicly requested a reunion tour from the trio in 1993\, writing a letter to Arnaldo Baptista\, but the bands first live performance since 1978 was at London’s Barbican Arts Centre on May 22\, 2006 – (though without Rita Lee\, who was replaced with Zélia Duncan on vocals). This performance was followed by shows in New York City\, Los Angeles (with the Flaming Lips)\, San Francisco\, Seattle\, Denver\, Chicago\, and Miami. However in September 2007\, both Arnaldo Baptista and Zélia Duncan left the band\, each expressing wishes to continue with their respective solo projects. \nSérgio Dias\, however\, vowed to keep the reformed band alive\, not wanting to let “the giant sleep again”\, as he put it. And so\, led by Dias with Esmeria Bulgari on vocals\, Henrique Peters on keyboards\, Vinicius Junqueira on bass and Claudio Tchernev on drums the band toured extensively enjoying some great highlights such as “A Minha Menina” featuring as the audio track for the McDonald’s commercial “Victory” in June 2008\, their first new release in 35 years\, “Haih Or Amortecedor” (ANTI- Records) in September 2009. Extensive tours in support of the album including Glastonbury Festival in June 2010. In 2011\, they collaborated with Of Montreal on the song “Bat Macumba” for the Red Hot Organization’s most recent charitable album “Red Hot+Rio 2.” and in 2013 the release of their album “Fool Metal Jack.” In 2017\, Sergio Dias collaborated with the English singer-songwriter\, Carly Bryant and subsequently she was put into the band’s line up on vocals\, guitars and keyboards. Tres Olhos Music Festival quoted after her debut performance “”Packed with the new vocals\, Carly Bryant took the audience to ecstasy\, showing she’s here to stay.”

His delightfully unconventional brand of House\, which has been described by some as “a whirlpool of weird\,” features his unmistakably peculiar vocals floating over the infectious basslines that have earned him the support of some of House music’s heaviest-hitters including Walker & Royce\, FISHER\, Kyle Watson\, Claude Vonstroke\, and Justin Martin. Since bursting onto the scene in 2018\, OMNOM has gone on to release several original tracks and remixes with labels such as Dirtybird\, Confession\, Box of Cats\, and Insomniac. \nBABY WEIGHT BIO: \nBaby Weight\, aka Cara Eser\, is a DJ\, producer\, and label boss from Washington\, D.C. who has gained notoriety for her “chunky” style of dance music. Her genre bending sound\, dynamic DJ sets\, and advocacy for more inclusivity within dance music has earned her the respect and support of peers like Walker & Royce\, The Blessed Madonna\, Claude VonStroke\, Claptone\, Shiba San\, Justin Martin\, DJ Sliink\, LP Giobbi\, VNSSA\, Kevin Knapp\, Noizu\, and Idris Elba among others. \nIn 2017\, Eser started the label Chub Rub which she uses to showcase emerging sounds from under the radar artists across the house music spectrum. This has led to a cult following curated around quirkiness\, community\, and diversity. In 2019\, her debut album ‘Phases’ peaked in multiple Top 10 charts on Beatport which spawned an equally popular remix album the following year. \nIn 2020\, she publicly came out as transgender citing a need to address her transition as an artist as well as in her personal life. Later that year\, her track “Rave Police” reached #1 paving the way to a wider audience. In 2021\, Eser was featured in Mixmag’s ‘Impact’ series leading to debuts on BBC Radio 6\, Diplo’s Revolution on SiriusXM\, and appearances at multiple festivals including Dirtybird Campout\, EDC Vegas\, Hard Summer\, and Firefly Music Festival. \nIn 2022\, Baby Weight released “House Princess” featuring Karnage Kills on Femme House’s first ever compilation to both commercial and critical acclaim — including a feature in Calvin Klein’s Pride campaign for that year. With an undeniable energy and music steeped in emotional integrity\, Baby Weight is quickly becoming an industry darling in electronic music. \n━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━ \nWhen you purchase tickets to this event you’ll automatically be signed up for LOCAL 161\, Public Works’ SMS community where you’ll get special invites + guestlist + other perks as a thank you for your support. We will have grilled veggies to balance the mix-and-match meal that will get you ready for summer gatherings. You’ll have the confidence to make barbacoa at home\, no ground pit needed! \nMENU \nBeef Barbacoa \nHandmade Flour Tortillas \nHandmade Corn Tortillas \nPasilla chile salsa \nChile BBQ sauce \nGrilled Seasonal Vegetables \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Soy\, Wheat. SUMMARY:Manny’s: Mission Local presents: The Shooting of Banko Brown
DESCRIPTION:Manny’s is excited to welcome fellow Mission mainstay Mission Local to our living room for our newest monthly event! \nSince 2008\, Mission Local\, the Mission’s fiercely independent local news site\, has focused on everything from police reform to corruption at City Hall\, housing\, the gig economy and the people and places that make the Mission a community. Now Mission Local is bringing its award winning team of journalists to Manny’s every month to delve into the big issues facing our neighbors and the city as a whole. \nThis month\, Managing Editor Joe Eskenazi is sitting down with Julia Arroyo\, the co-executive director of the Young Women’s Freedom Center\, and Lateefah Simon\, a longtime achiever in undoing the worst excesses of the criminal justice system — and\, presently\, a candidate for Congress. The subject of their discussion will be the life and death of Banko Brown and the city he called home. \nWhile the early April stabbing of tech executive Bob Lee grabbed international headlines and spurred ruminations on the condition of San Francisco\, the facts of the case as they now appear indicate it had little to do with the state of this city. Brown’s death\, however — a homeless Black trans man shot by a Black Walgreens security guard who had himself struggled with housing security — did indeed epitomize the dystopian state of San Francisco. In brief: Two marginalized Black men were pitted against one another\, with one killing the other\, in a conflict sparked by $14.64 worth of goods from a cynical\, billion-dollar corporation. \nArroyo knew Brown well and worked alongside him at the Young Women’s Freedom Center. Simon founded the forbearer of the Young Women’s Freedom Center when she was just 19\, and has spent decades fighting for better outcomes for society’s least fortunate. \nPlease join us for this important and necessary conversation. \nThis conversation will be open for all community members and we never turn away folks due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket or have any access needs/questions\, please email angelina@welcometomannys.com with the title of the event. \nABOUT OUR PANELISTS \nJulia Arroyo: \nJulia has over two decades of experience in community health\, rape crisis\, and work with sexually exploited youth. Since joining YWFC in 2014\, Julia has been instrumental in the success of the organization’s programmatic work and in maintaining the culture and healing methodologies central to its ability to effect change. Julia can also be credited with running the YWFC headquarters in San Francisco – enabling expansion to Santa Clara County\, Oakland\, and Los Angeles. \nShe is a second-generation immigrant of Mexican/ Filipino descent and identifies as Xicana. And this work and YWFC are personal to her\, having had involvement in foster care\, the underground street economy\, and incarceration. She has healed her life and is committed to supporting marginalized girls to break free from systemic and interpersonal violence. She is currently majoring in Women’s Studies at San Francisco City College and has an extensive background in community health\, rape crisis\, and work with sexually exploited youth. \nLateefah Simon: \nLateefah Simon was first elected to serve District 7 on the BART Board of Directors on November 8\, 2016 and was reelected in 2020. She served as President of the BART Board in 2020. \nA nationally recognized advocate for civil rights and racial justice\, Lateefah brings over 20 years of executive experience advancing opportunities for communities of color and low-income communities in the Bay Area. She has been the President of the Akonadi Foundation since 2016. That same year—driven by the death of Oscar Grant—she ran and was elected to the Bay Area Rapid Transit Board of Directors. Lateefah is also a member of California State University’s Board of Trustees and frequently turned to by state officials for strategic advice on policy matters related to racial justice. Lateefah received the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award in 2003—making her the youngest woman ever to receive the award. \nPreviously\, Lateefah served as Program Director at the Rosenberg Foundation—where she launched the Leading Edge Fund to seed\, incubate and accelerate bold ideas from the next generation of progressive movement leaders in California. She also held the position of Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area. Lateefah also spearheaded San Francisco’s first reentry\, a highly effective anti-recidivism youth services division under the leadership of then-District Attorney Kamala Harris. \nJoe Eskenazi: \nJoe is the Managing Editor and a Columnist for Mission Local. He was previously a writer and columnist for SF Weekly and a senior editor at San Francisco Magazine. You may also have read his work in the Guardian (U.S. and U.K.); San Francisco Public Press; San Francisco Chronicle; San Francisco Examiner; Dallas Morning News; and elsewhere. The Northern California branch of the Society of Professional Journalists named Eskenazi the 2019 Journalist of the Year. Born in San Francisco\, raised in the Bay Area\, and attended U.C. Berkeley\, he now resides in the Excelsior with his wife and three (!) kids\, 4.3 miles from his birthplace and 5\,474 from hers. \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Community Dinner: Grandmother’s Beef Salpicón with Chef Violeta Sandoval
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$18.00 \nA one-plate dinner with beer and wine available for sale. This is not a cooking class. This seating is limited to 40 guests. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are welcome. \nFor May’s Community Dinner\, we are happy to welcome the return of Chef Violeta to 18th St. Kitchen. She is one of our longest serving Peer Health Educators in our Community Programs and is one of our most beloved teachers and chefs. She graduated from culinary school in El Salvador before emigrating to San Francisco\, where she raised her beautiful family and shared her love of delicious food. Join us for a very special evening with Violeta as she cooks a meal to honor her grandmother’s love. \nVioleta shares this story behind the recipe: \n The recipe for beef salpicón and its broth are very important to me\, since as a girl it was my favorite food and my grandmother prepared it for me to celebrate my birthday. At this time\, a food processor was not accessible\, therefore my grandmother prepared everything the day before since it was a lot of work and she did it like this: \n She cooked the beef loin with many spices and herbs to make a soup with it; she removed the meat and cooled it. \n She would cut very finely: the already cold meat\, onion\, mint and radishes (she said that ground beef is not the same)\, then she would add lemon juice\, salt\, pepper and serve it to me with white rice\, avocado\, handmade tortillas and cheese. \n With the broth\, she made a delicious soup just by adding potatoes and noodles.\n Everything was done with great love to celebrate my birthday and I waited very excited for that day because she let me eat everything I wanted. \n This is one of the many recipes that she taught me to cook but this one is full of love and nostalgia because she reminds me of how important and special she made me feel by cooking with love for me. \nNote: this ticket page is for the first seating from 6-7 pm. We do not have reserved seating and dining will take place at communal tables. For our second seating at 7:30 pm\, please click here. \nMENU \nCaldo De Carne Con Papas—Meat Broth with Potatoes and Noodles \nSalpicón De Carne De Res—Chilled Beef Salad with Fresh Herbs and a Lime Vinaigrette \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Wheat If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to attend\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. Because we are cooking in large batches\, we are very limited in accommodating allergens and dietary restrictions. \nABOUT COMMUNITY DINNER \nOnce a month\, we open our doors to friends new and old\, welcoming all to our share a table and a delicious meal. Every month is something different\, but tickets are always $18 and always tasty. Wine and beer are for sale at the event. Kids welcome!

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Pearl and The Oysters\, Mae Powell\, Healing Potpourri
DESCRIPTION:$18 advance and $20 day show \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nPut on your Powerglove\, have a colorful cocktail and enjoy the view. Stones Throw is excited to introduce Pearl & The Oysters\, the duo of Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack. Their new song “Pacific Ave\,” written about their move from Florida to Los Angeles\, features Alex Brettin of Mild High Club on guitar. The “Pacific Ave” video directed by Sean McGuirk\, an ’80s-style live TV performance\, was inspired by Japanese Jazz Fusion artists like Casiopea and Yellow Magic Orchestra’s embrace of both analog and digital in their music and visuals. \nPearl & The Oysters met at high school in Paris and immediately bonded over their mutual love for ’70s jazz and ‘90s space age pop. They have been writing and performing together ever since\, and moved across the Atlantic together in 2015. \nPearl & The Oysters say: “‘In January 2020\, we settled in L.A. full of hope for the future of the band. ‘Pacific Ave’ was a cryptic attempt to allude to our first steps in this new environment being a little alienating\, as we were discovering a megalopolis turned ghost town. Because we were physically confined\, it really felt like the only avenue to escape was a mental one. For us\, it meant a lot of daydreaming and fantasizing about L.A. itself or what it could represent. The song is inspired sonically by AOR and jazz-pop records of the late 1970s.”
