Pat is an original writer for NBC’s Seinfeld\, a Tonight Show veteran\, a critically acclaimed playwright and a contributing commentator to National Public Radio. He is recognized for his genuinely funny Americana humor and his salute to nostalgia. Pat is the creator and host of the weekly podcast Creativity in Captivity available on all platforms. \nAs a playwright\, Pat’s first endeavor Bunk Bed Brothers was optioned by Columbia Pictures\, then gained the attention of the TV industry and was filmed as the sit-com\, American Pie\, for NBC. Hazell’s signature work\, The Wonder Bread Years\, a grand salute to the baby-boomer generation\, aired on PBS where they referred to Hazell as “America’s Foremost Pop Culture Anthropologist.” \nAs the Chief Creative Officer of Sweetwood Creative\, he is responsible for the creation of eight original productions: Pat Hazell’s Permanent Record\, The Wonder Bread Years\, The Good Humor Men\, Bunk Bed Brothers\, My Funny Valentine\, My Life in 3D\, A Kodachrome Christmas and Grounded For Life:The Musical. Finally\, because just like a solid pair of tennis shoes or a little black dress\, everyone needs a dessert up their sleeve\, we will make chocolate pudding – why not? And a perfect warm dessert you can use with whatever fruit looks best at Bi-Rite Market. \nBy the end of the third night\, you will have been exposed to a host of recipe. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

SUMMARY:ATA: Jesse Malmed — “Still\, Moving”
DESCRIPTION:film + performance + merch table \nTRT: ~60 mins\, video\, sound\, voice \nTRAILER – https://vimeo.com/846431161 \n“Still\, Moving” is a live collaged video-performance work blending shards and selections\, asides and besides\, sketches and considerations from an archive of some eighteen years of practicing the imperfect. A kind of live re-re- megamix\, a cover of itself\, a glyphic glimpse and an experiment in liveness and notions of iterative television versionalities\, “Still\, Moving”\, includes works that have screened and exhibited at festivals\, galleries\, museums\, bars and barns in new and altered contexts. Exploring the tensions and possibilities along spectra such as improvisation/composition\, comedy/poetry\, clarity/opacity\, stillness/movement\, a sense of the recombinant and polyrhythmic capacity of restless mind syndrome emerges (like emergency\, like urgency). \nAn hour of never not languaging work for the screen playing in creative reading\, studied density\, the one-(hundred)-liner\, choirs\, screen texts\, the bootleg\, the cover\, jokes\, speculative etymologies\, karaoke\, accents\, loops\, improvisation\, the cinemagical\, body swaps\, poetry\, citation and human voice. Conceptually engaged\, textually-intensive and visually mesmerizing\, the suite scrambles somewhere in the intersects of conceptual comedy\, dizzying illogics\, the poetic plu-future and sustainable sourcing. Through deliberate mistranslation and strategic denaturing of languages and codes\, we revel in the revelation of their extra-communicative potential as sound\, as image\, as object\, shifting our expectations of the show\, of the cinema\, of the worlds those words screen. \nIn addition\, Jesse brings his conceptual shoppe droppe of caps\, stickers\, doorhangers\, temporary tattoos\, magnets\, buttons\, postcards\, etc. now numbering in the triple digits. \nBIO: \nJesse Malmed is an artist\, curator and educator living and working in video\, performance\, text\, installation\, events\, occasional objects\, their gaps and overlaps and Chicago and Milwaukee. His works play in sub- and counter-cultural histories\, like a joke that’s a poem that’s a song covering itself\, a shadow puppet interfering in the broadcast beam\, having déjà vu for the first time\, or watching a time travel sequence in reverse. Engaging with a range of publics\, his entanglements and propositions include instigating the poster platform Western Pole\, co-driving artist bumper sticker project Trunk Show\, directing the Live to Tape Artist Television Festival\, programming with ACRE TV and the Nightingale Cinema\, hosting the Artists’ Karaoke Archive\, permanent guest hosting contemporary art radio show Bad at Sports\, slinging wares and wears via Jetsy Merchblatt\, and recording and assisting the kindergarten a capella noise ensemble Huskies Floorchestra. He has performed\, screened and exhibited at museums\, microcinemas\, film festivals\, galleries\, bars and barns\, including solo presentations at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\, DePaul Art Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Photography\, Artists’ Television Access\, Microlights and the Back Room at Kim’s Corner. Raised in Santa Fe\, he attended Bard College and the University of Illinois at Chicago\, where he teaches alongside Chicago Public Schools and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. www.jessemalmed.net

SUMMARY:Sha’ar Zahav: CMC Shenson Faculty Concert Series: Jon Jang\, piano
DESCRIPTION:The Shenson Faculty Concert Series returns this summer with free concerts spotlighting CMC’s talented faculty members. Each year\, the Shenson Foundation sponsors free community concerts for musical projects to support CMC faculty as performing artists and ensure their work on stage is shared and celebrated in our community. \nThis year’s accomplished presenters will highlight a wide variety of musical styles\, techniques\, and creative inspirations—from jazz to classical to folk traditions\, original compositions\, and music as a tool for social justice and historical and cultural reflection. \n July 13: Rita Lackey\, voice/piano\n July 20: Dorisiya Yosifova\, violin\n August 3: Erick Peralta\, piano\n August 10: Jon Jang\, piano \nCivil Wrongs: Music about Black American & Japanese American Incarceration with Jon Jang\, piano \nThursday\, August 10 at 7pm \nSha’ar Zahav (290 Dolores St\, San Francisco) \nFREE \nCivil Wrongs Music will commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the signing of the Civil Liberties Act on August 10\, 1988\, the United States federal law granting reparations to Japanese Americans who had been wrongly incarcerated by the United States government during World War II. \nThe program will feature Mediations on Integration\, written by Charles Mingus in 1964 in response to a Life Magazine article about prisons being built in the South to incarcerate Black Civil Rights activists\, and Jang’s original 1987 composition Reparations Now!\, paying tribute to the National Coalition for Redress and Reparations for Japanese Americans\, as well as a support statement for reparations for Black Americans. \nFeaturing Musicians: \nErika Oba\, flute; Gary Brown\, double bass; Jon Jang\, piano; Deszon Claiborne\, percussion (CMC Faculty) \nThis event will be hosted by our Mission District neighbors Sha’ar Zahav. RSVP is recommended\, but there will be space for walk-up patrons at the door. \nAbout the Performers: \nFor four decades\, the trajectory of composer-pianist Jon Jang’s work mirrors the development of a multiracial democratic New American Majority from his unique perspective. Inspired by the music from the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s\, Jang has collaborated with Max Roach in their work SenseUs (1990). “Eleanor Bumpurs” (1993) and “Can’t Stop Cryin’ for America: Black Lives Matter!” (2017) represent Jang’s works in response to the legal lynching of Black Americans. Jang’s Reparations Now! Concerto for Large Ensemble and Taiko (1987) pays tribute to the National Coalition for Redress and Reparations and shouts out a clarion call for reparations for Black Americans. \nJang also explores Chinese American transnational history in works such as The Chinese American Symphony (2007)\, a work that pays tribute to the Chinese immigrant laborers who built the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. Jang\, a grandson of a paper son\, composed “Island: The Immigrant Suite No. 2” for the Kronos Quartet about the Chinese immigrants who were incarcerated on Angel Island in San Francisco during the Chinese Exclusion Act era. \nJang has toured with Max Roach\, James Newton\, David Murray\, Jiebing Chen and Min Xiao-Fen in Europe\, China\, South Africa\, Canada and the United States. \nAbout the Venue: \nMasks are encouraged but not required. SUMMARY:GLBT History Museum: High Spots in a Low Dive: Doris Fish Home Movies 1981-1991
DESCRIPTION:$10.00 | Free for members \nRSVP and purchase tickets – https://glbthistory.ticketing.veevartapp.com/tickets/view/list/high-spots-in-a-low-dive-doris-fish-home-movies-19811991 \nPhillip R. Ford\, director of the cult film classic Vegas in Space (1991)\, served most of the 1980s as “honorary straight man” in the legendary San Francisco drag troupe Sluts A-Go-Go. Collaborating with his mentor and friend\, the legendary drag queen Doris Fish\, along with Miss X and “Tippi”\, he created and co-starred in some celebrated drag theater\, both on nightclub and legitimate stages\, which are still lovingly remembered today by those who were there. \nDoris Fish hailed from Sydney but relocated mostly full time to San Francisco in the late 70s. Ford was a young filmmaker of 21 when he met Fish\, who soon recruited him to direct her feature film obsession Vegas in Space. Little did they know the next decade of their lives would be given over to the toils and triumphs that awaited. Driving under the influence of glamour\, film theory and an addictive love of vivid colors and bad acting\, they devoted all of their time\, money and youth to the completion of Doris and Phillip’s cinematic fantasy. Vegas in Space famously took nine years to complete and created a sensation at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival\, appeared at festivals worldwide\, and was broadcast on USA Network’s Up All Night. The film today is a greater cult phenomenon than when it was released\, having inspired generations of young queens the world over to dedicate themselves to follow their own artistic dreams. \nIn High Spots in a Low Dive – Doris Fish Home Movies 1981 to 1991\, Ford presents a selection of greatest hits from his extensive “home movie” collection of videos from stage and TV performances together with many glimpses behind-the-scenes. Live onstage he shares his stories and reminiscences\, along with a fabulous assortment of video hits from San Francisco in the 1980s\, a rather forgotten period of drag theater history. Among the high spots are clips from Nightclub of the Living Dead\, The Happy Hour Show\, Bad Seed\, Gay Cable Network and The Sluts A-Go-Go All Star Gang Bang and Who Does That Bitch Think She Is?. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive and DorisFish.com. \nSpeakers \nPhillip R. Ford is an erstwhile producer\, director and entertainer\, best known as the director of the classic cult film Vegas in Space starring the legendary Doris Fish. He spent most of the 1980s serving onstage as the “honorary straight man” in numerous low dives in San Francisco with the fabulous and notorious Sluts A-Go-Go drag ensemble.

SUMMARY:Red Poppy Art House: Jazz in the neighborhood: Scott Foster & Sheldon Brown Duets
DESCRIPTION:The evening will feature an Eclectic mix of jazz\, original and improvised music for guitar and saxophone in an intimate duo setting. Scott and Sheldon are reuniting after a long hiatus and look forward to sharing work from their collaboration 25 years ago and updating their work together with developments that have sprung up in the interim. This will be a concert full of surprises for both the audience and performers. \nFeaturing:\nScott Foster – Guitar\nSheldon Brown – Saxophones \nFriday\, August 10\, 2023\nTime: 7:00 pm doors\, 7:30 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $15 – $30 / (Door) $35 general \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nComposer and woodwind instrumentalist Sheldon Brown has been active on the San Francisco Bay Area creative music scene and beyond for over 30 years. In addition to performing his original music with Sheldon Brown Group\, Brown has performed with a diverse array of people and groups including Anthony Braxton\, Ben Goldberg\, Omar Sosa\, Club Foot Orchestra\, Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra\, Clarinet Thing and Bobby Weir. His extended original composition Blood of the Air (funded by Chamber Music America and Inter Music) premiered at the 32nd Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival\, and was featured at the 16th Annual Outsound Festival. Most recently Brown performed and composed music for Club Foot Orchestra’s score for the classic silent film\, Pandora’s Box\, at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. \nScott Foster has been a fixture on San Francisco jazz scene for over two decades. He can be heard performing regularly with his own group and as a sideman with the Americano Social Club\, B3B4 and multitude of the bay area’s finest musicians at wide variety of venues. Scott Foster’s CD’s “Basement Sinfonietta”\, “Go Small” and “Night Blooming Jazzmen” are currently available. Additionally Scott is the Performing Arts Chair and Jazz Band Director at the Urban School of San Francisco. \nJAZZ IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: \nJazz in the Neighborhood works to improve the economics of jazz performance in the Bay Area by presenting affordable concerts\, paying musicians a guaranteed wage\, and supporting the work of established and aspiring jazz artists. \nArt • Equity • Access. \nART • Jazz is often called the one truly American art form. We honor that legacy while supporting exploration and new approaches to the genre. Jazz in the Neighborhood events provide a space for jazz musicians to be creative\, spontaneous\, and expressive in their interpretation of music. Our Emerging Artists program nurtures the upcoming generation of jazz musicians through mentoring and opportunities to learn on the bandstand. \nEQUITY • Jazz musicians have long been participants in the “gig” economy. Very few have the security of regular employment playing jazz\, especially with the decline of union representation. For many\, the economics of jazz performance has become a cut of ticket sales\, a tip jar\, maybe a free meal\, and often a day job. This kind of remuneration hardly seems fair given the knowledge\, skill\, and practice that’s required to become a jazz musician. So unlike many concert producers\, Jazz in the Neighborhood guarantees musicians a fair wage when they perform at our events. We encourage all venues to join us in paying a guaranteed fair wage to jazz musicians. \nACCESS • We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy live jazz in a comfortable\, acoustically appropriate setting at an affordable price. Many of our shows are free. When events have an admission charge\, we keep the price reasonable and never turn anyone away for lack of funds. Please take a look at our events blog and calendar page for upcoming concerts. \nhttps://jazzintheneighborhood.org/about/mission/\nhttps://sheldonbrownmusic.com/home

SUMMARY:Z Space: Oakland Theater Project and Z Space present Mahâbhârata
DESCRIPTION:Oakland Theater Project and Z Space present\nMahâbhârata\nby Geetha Reddy\nDirected by Michael Socrates Moran \nAugust 10-20 on Z Space’s Steindler Stage \n“It is not a story. No\, not like that. History. Unverifiable history… Old History. Legend. Itahasa.” \nOakland Theater Project and Z space present an encore of Geetha Reddy’s “totally epic” (KQED) 2019 Mahâbhârata\, featuring OTP Company Member J Jha in a bold\, one-person retelling of the ancient text\, reimagined and expanded for Z Space’s Stendler Stage. Dating from around 800 BCE\, the great Indian epic boasts 100\,000 verses and a cast of thousands\, and is told anew to each generation of Indian children in a version that speaks to the time in which they are living. From tales of triumphant warriors to tantalizing histories woven among the battles; from boundaries broken to pathways blazed—don’t miss this audience favorite\, which examines the nature of conflict\, betrayal\, and victory through a contemporary lens\, and recounts the history of a cosmic civil war in the hope that humanity will learn not to repeat it.

The Newport Beach native now calls Los Angeles home\, and has immersed herself into the local electronic scene. Although Santa never gave her the turntables she wanted at a young age\, she soon found herself drumming in local rock and indie rock bands. From there she started djing\, and began performing at local clubs and house parties. After djing for 7 years and producing for 3\, her debut single was released in early 2018 on House of Hustle Records and since\, she has released multiple EP’s and singles on labels such as Dirtybird Records\, Higher Ground\, Dim Mak\, Sweat It Out\, Psycho Disco\, Box of Cats\, Strangelove Recordings\, and many more\, including a Beatport #1 single “Word”\, with Walker & Royce\, on Black Book Records/ HotBoi. Her live sets cover all genres of house and techno\, although don’t be surprised to hear some classic disco as well. SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Handmade Halloumi: Cheesemaking & Appetizers - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on cooking class culminating in a family-style dinner served with a glass of wine or beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nAn ancient Cyprus cheese from the Byzantine era\, halloumi is one of the most popular Mediterranean cheeses around. It’s one of the rare cheeses that doesn’t melt when seared\, it grills like a dream\, and it transforms into beautiful mezze and appetizer plates. Yet it’s somehow still underutilized in our American kitchens. The class will kick off with a halloumi tasting and breezy lesson of the cheese’s rich history and tradition. Then you’ll make your own halloumi by-hand\, and master searing it to golden perfection. Using store-bought versions while your own halloumi cures\, you’ll also learn how to incorporate this versatile cheese into three easy summer dishes. We’ll enjoy the bounty together at the end of class! Every student will leave with their own piece of halloumi that will be ready to eat the next day. \nMENU \nHandmade Halloumi with Cow’s Milk \nSeared Halloumi with Stone Fruit and Torn Mint—A simple\, composed dish with peaches or nectarines and mint that’s as easy as it is beautiful. \nGrilled Halloumi\, Corn\, and Tomato Herb Salad—Grilled halloumi meets summer’s corn\, sweet tomatoes\, and herbs in this simple and fresh summer salad. \nHalloumi Mediterranean Platter: Golden Halloumi\, Heirloom Tomatoes\, Cucumbers\, Olives\, and perfectly-cooked Eggs with Pita or Lavash. A classic breakfast that highlights the season’s produce that’s fit for lunch or al fresco dinner\, too. \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Dairy (Cow\, Sheep and Goat)\, Wheat\, Eggs. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nAuthor of It’s Not You\, it’s Brie: Unwrapping America’s Unique Culture of Cheese\, Kirstin Jackson is a cheesemaking teacher\, wine and cheese educator\, and writer. She loves teaching people how to make ricotta and creamy burrata pillows as much as she adores pairing her new favorite local cheese with wine. She blames her parents who took her on trips to the California dairy country at a very young age for feeding her current obsession.

He tends his sheep and rides his motorcycle\, passing his days in familiar and traditional routines far from the city lights. But when Tharlo travels to the city for an ID card photo and meets Yangtso\, a modern young hairdresser\, his monastic life will forever change. \nWriter and director Pema Tseden (1969-2023) is widely recognized as the leading filmmaker of a newly emerging Tibetan cinema and the first director in China to film his movies entirely in the Tibetan language. Tseden has published more than 50 short stories and novels both in Tibetan and Chinese; his work has won numerous wards including the Drang-char (sbrang-char) Tibetan Literature Prize and has been translated into languages English\, French\, and German. \nCo-presented by Bay Area Chinese Culture Salon (BACCS)\, our tribute to the recently deceased Tibetan New Wave pioneer Pema Tseden shows off the thoughtful nuance of his range by pairing the stylish existential road movie Jinpa with the atmospheric neorealist dramedy Tharlo. \nGeneral admission is $14. Both shows are free or discounted for Roxie members. Get a Pema Tseden Tribute pass and see both films for only $22! If you purchase a double feature pass\, this will be available for pick up at the box office on August 13.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Jinpa
DESCRIPTION:On the path of life\, sometimes we meet someone whose dreams overtake our own to the point that they converge. This is a story of revenge and redemption. On an isolated road passing through the vast barren plains of Tibet\, a truck driver who has accidentally run over a sheep chances upon a young man who is hitching a ride. As they drive and chat\, the truck driver notices that his new friend has a silver dagger strapped to his leg; he comes to understand that this man is out to kill someone who wronged him earlier in life. As he drops the hitchhiker off at a fork in the road\, little does the truck driver realize that their short time together has changed everything\, and that their destinies are inexorably intertwined. \nDirected by Pema Tseden. Produced by Jacky Pang and Wong Kar-Wai. \nWriter and director Pema Tseden (1969-2023) is widely recognized as the leading filmmaker of a newly emerging Tibetan cinema and the first director in China to film his movies entirely in the Tibetan language.
