SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Summer Fruit Tree Pruning
DESCRIPTION:Fruit trees require year-round care\, and summer pruning is critical to their health. Summer pruning allows air and light to reach fruits and lower branches\, controls growth on vigorous trees\, helps direct a tree’s shape\, and is an opportunity to remove dead\, damaged\, and dying wood. Our expert instructors will teach general pruning techniques\, discuss the differences between summer and winter pruning\, and lead a hands-on demonstration so you can learn which cuts will keep your trees healthy and productive. \nFollowing the workshop\, you can put your newfound skills to use! Feel free to bring a lunch and eat with GFE staff and volunteers\, and then at 1pm\, join a group of fellow workshop participants and others from the GFE community to prune our orchard trees. \nYour expert instructors Jamie Chan and Blas Herrera are natives of San Francisco. They tend a small homestead in San Francisco with their two girls\, complete with honey bees\, chickens\, greenhouse\, mini-orchard\, and vegetables. Blas has a degree in environmental studies\, a certificate in sustainable design from the Urban Permaculture Institute of San Francisco and currently is assistant director of education at CuriOdyssey\, Zoo and Science Museum. Jamie has an MS in science and a doctorate in education from SF State University. She is a certified UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and is currently director of programs at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park (which includes the SF Botanical Garden\, Conservatory of Flowers\, and Japanese Tea Garden). In their free time\, you can find them volunteering at their local community greenspace Sisterhood Gardens and running their garden education company @FogCityGardener. \nCOVID-19 information: \n GFE Mask Guidelines: Masks are optional for vaccinated visitors (workshop participants\, volunteers\, students etc.) and required for unvaccinated individuals. Our staff is fully vaccinated and boosted. Thank you for continuing to keep the garden a safe and open space for everyone!\n Please bring your own gardening gloves for possible hands-on activities.\n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Mozzarella & Burrata by Hand - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$120.00\nMember Price:\n$110.00 \nA hands-on cheesemaking course. This class is limited to 16 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nFresh burrata and mozzarella can be notoriously fussy to make. Cheesemaking teacher Kirstin Jackson will guide you along the fun process of stretching bocconcini\, ovolini\, and their cream-filled cousin\, burrata. We’ll start with a mozzarella and burrata cheese tasting\, then jump into making it ourselves. You’ll learn the basics of cheesemaking science\, which ingredients to use and why\, the ins and outs of stretching cheese curd\, and get advice on some simple ways to eat your newest cheese creation. \nWe’ll end the class with a light lunch consisting of our own cheeses\, a seasonal vegetarian salad\, locally baked bread\, and a glass of wine or beer! \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nAuthor of It’s Not You\, it’s Brie: Unwrapping America’s Unique Culture of Cheese\, Kirstin Jackson is a cheesemaking teacher\, wine and cheese educator\, and writer. She loves teaching people how to make ricotta and creamy burrata pillows as much as she adores pairing her new favorite local cheese with wine. She blames her parents who took her on trips to the California dairy country at a very young age for feeding her current obsession.

SUMMARY:Luna Rienne Gallery: Visible Light Spectrum (Opening Reception)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Opening Reception Saturday\, July 29\, 2023 from 6 to 9PM. \nVisible Light Spectrum is a collection of paintings further exploring the perceived notions of color. With his signature style\, Apexer takes spray can to canvas to create abstract styles with high-key color combinations that play with the viewer’s eye and emotion. \nApexer AKA Ricardo Richey is a San Francisco-born and -bred artist who creates colorful abstract patterns with spray paint for a style that is both typographic and architectural. Having begun his career as a kid tagging MUNI buses\, Apexer moved to the wall\, then the canvas\, in careful exploration of abstract letter forms. His pieces are crafted with multiple layers\, patterns\, and colors that evoke the sense of urban building. Part of the Gestalt Collective\, Apexer has curated and created mural projects throughout the city. His fine art has been exhibited at Pacific Asia Museum\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts\, White Walls\, the Luggage Store Gallery\, and abroad. He completed an artist residency at the Headland Center for the Arts and has been featured in numerous documentaries and publications about art in the Mission District.

He has worked in the theater and in film/video as an actor\, director\, playwright\, producer\, and designer. Having stage managed and production managed several plays in college at Dartmouth and at his time at ACT as a Fellow\, Spencer now works in technology but has his heart in the arts. \nDennis Hasty (Zack) trained at the prestigious Jean Shelton Acting School\, and did summer workshops with the legendary Stella Adler. A former competitive gymnast and Chippendale’s dancer\, Dennis was last seen locally at The Curran Theater in “The Real Live Brady Bunch”\, as well as his recurring role of Spiderman at several children’s birthday parties. \nDenise Tyrrell (Norma) re-entered the theatrical world after a public affairs and executive career spanning thirty+ years. SUMMARY:ODC Theater: Amy Seiwert’s Imagery - SKETCH 13: Lucky
DESCRIPTION:SKETCH 13: Lucky invites four choreographers to embrace chance and create their own luck as they step out of their creative habits. What happens when we bring an element of chance into our choreographic process\, challenging our collaborators to flex their creativity and leading to new discoveries? Join us as we flip a coin\, roll the dice and see what happens… Get your tickets now\, and let the games begin! \nIt’s rare to have time and support for the kind of risk-taking Seiwert has championed with the Sketch series—and a privilege to witness. — Karen Hildenbrand\, Fjord Review \nAmy Seiwert’s Imagery\, a contemporary ballet company in San Francisco\, expands the definition of ballet by exploding the preconceptions of what ballet is and can be. Imagery drives ballet’s evolution by nurturing responsible environments for creative risk-taking\, partnering with diverse collaborators\, and mentoring emerging leaders in the field. Imagery’s artists share the belief that through collaboration and experimentation\, vibrant and courageous ideas can become inspiring works of art.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Meet California Senate candidate Congresswoman Barbara Lee!
DESCRIPTION:The race for California’s Senate seat has already started to heat up\, with three strong contenders from across California announcing their candidacy. \nOne of those strong contenders is none other then East Bay representative Congresswoman Barbara Lee! Throughout her time in Congress\, representative Lee has been a consistent progress voice in Washington and now is looking to take those progressive policies to the Senate. \nJoin us on Monday\, July 31st at 5:30pm for a special meet and greet with the amazing Congresswoman Lee. This will be an opportunity to meet not only a local representative\, but also one of the 3 candidates running for California Senate! \nAbout Barbara Lee: \nCongresswoman Barbara Lee has been representing California’s 12th District (formerly 13th) since 1998. She is the highest ranking African American woman appointed to Democratic Leadership\, serving as Co-Chair of the Policy and Steering Committee. She also serves on the Budget Committee and the powerful Appropriations Committee\, which oversees all federal government spending. \nIn 2001\, Congresswoman Lee received national attention as the only Member of Congress to oppose the authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) in the wake of the horrific events on September 11th. The Congresswoman believed this AUMF would become a blank check for endless war. As of 2013\, this authorization had been used more than 30 times to engage in military action without Congressional oversight. Congresswoman Lee is working to repeal this blank check and restore Congress’s constitutional oversight to matters of war and peace. She was also an outspoken opponent of the Iraq War. \nCurrently\, Congresswoman Lee serves on the Budget Committee and the powerful Appropriations Committee\, which oversees all federal government spending. She serves on three subcommittees (Ranking Member\, State and Foreign Operations; Labor\, Health and Human Services\, Education; and Agriculture\, Rural Development\, Food and Drug Administration) of the Appropriations Committee. In January 2021\, she became the first African-American to chair the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State\, Foreign Operations\, and Related Programs.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Honduras & The Drug Trade:SF Chronicle Editor in Chief + Reporters Discuss
DESCRIPTION:The open air drug markets in San Francisco drug trade is one of the main issues affecting San Francisco today. Recently in response to this crisis within the city\, the San Francisco Chronicle spent 18 months investigating the purported connection between those drug markets and a specific area in Honduras. The response to that reporting has been swift\, powerful\, and polarizing. \nComing to Manny’s to discuss the reporting their methodology\, and what the Chronicle hoped to accomplish with this investigative report will be the editor-in-chief of the chronicle Emilio Garcia-Ruiz something and the two journalists who led this report\, Megan Cassidy & Gabrielle Lurie \nIn addition to discussing the findings in the report the chronicle staff will be here to also discuss how they made sure to navigate the complex political waters of reporting on the connection between the drug trade and a specific place\, and how they might believe the findings in that reporting could or should affect policy makers thinking around how to how to address the drug trade in San Francisco.

SUMMARY:500 Capp: The Mex Files: A Divination Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 6:30pm. Performance starts at 7pm. Duration 1 hour \nTickets are on a sliding scale basis starting at $30 \nNo one turned away due to lack of funds\, please contact visit@500cappstreet.org \nLa Pocha Nostra’s Artistic Directors Balitrónica and Gómez-Peña will present a duet performance featuring excerpts from their most recent performance manuscripts and bank of ritual actions. Utilizing a casino roulette and several tarot decks\, Balitrónica will use various forms of oracular magic to select spoken word texts and props for Gómez-Peña’s live performance. The fate of the script and the performance are determined by methods of divination\, chance\, and direct contact with the spirits that be at the dining room of 500 Capp Street. \nAlso on view in the Dining Room starting August 3rd is an evolving exhibition of selected objects from Gomez-Peña’s own “living archives” arranged in dialog with the eclectic collection already inhabiting the room. Curated by Emma Tramposch (La Pocha Nostra’s Executive Director and Curator of the Living Archives) and Lian Ladia (Curator\, Exhibitions and Programs\, 500 Capp Street). Both partners have been investigating topics vital to a current conversation about decolonization and the nature and future of museums and collecting—including who is served and represented by museums\, what it means to curate an archive for artistic reinvention\, political dialog and spiritual survival. \nAbout the Artists \nGuillermo Gómez-Peña is a performance artist\, writer\, activist\, radical pedagogue and artistic director of the performance troupe La Pocha Nostra. Born in Mexico City\, he moved to the US in 1978\, and since 1995\, his three homes have been San Francisco\, Mexico City and the “road”. \nHis performance work and 21 books have contributed to the debates on cultural\, generational\, and gender diversity\, border culture and North-South relations. His artwork has been presented at over one thousand venues across the US\, Canada\, Latin America\, Europe\, Russia\, South Africa and Australia. A MacArthur Fellow\, USA Artists Fellow\, and a Bessie\, Guggenheim\, and American Book Award recipient\, he is a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines in the US\, Mexico\, and Europe and a contributing editor to The Drama Review (NYU-MIT)\, the Performance Art Week Journal of the Venice Biennale\, and emisférica\, the publication of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics (NYU). Gómez-Peña is currently a Patron for the London-based Live Art Development Agency\, and a Senior Fellow in the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics. \nBalitrónica (US/Mexico) Artistic Co-Director\, Priestess & Psychomagic Occultist. Balitrónica is a cyborg-feminist poet\, performance artist\, hereditary witch\, 2nd Degree\, Cabot Priestess\, and co-Artistic director of La Pocha Nostra. Since joining La Pocha Nostra\, she has made a full-time performance practice that explores the ideas of ritual psychomagic acts\, occult methods of transcendence\, and the human body as conduit. In addition to her formal training in musical theater and Victorian literature\, she holds an MFA in Poetry from Mills College. Her performance work has been largely influenced by her time spent living in a 17th Century Catholic Convent in Paris with a Dominican Order of Nuns. Balitrónica has been touring internationally with Gómez-Peña since 2013 and currently resides between San Francisco\, Mexico City\, and the San Diego/Tijuana Border. \nThe Mex Files: A Divination Ritual would not be possible without the support of Tieger Foundation and La Pocha Nostra.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Hot Labor Summer: Is Union Organizing Having a Resurgence?
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve been reading the news lately then you’ve probably seen reporting on a lot of major wins for labor unions around the country…or at the very least big strikes and fights being waged for fair compensation of their members. \nBetween Amazon\, Starbucks\, and the recent writers and actors strikes in Hollywood the question is out there is this a hot labor summer or a longer-term trend? \nComing to Manny’s to discuss this very question are two of San Francisco’s most senior labor leaders Rudy Gonzalez\, of the building and trades\, and Kim Tavaglione\, The executive director of the San Francisco Labor Council. \nIs there something going on around the country right now\, perhaps something about the post pandemic era\, that’s making labor unions stronger and more bold? \nOr has this been going on the whole time and it’s just being reported on more in this moment. What are folks fighting for and what are they entitled to? How does the advent of AI and streaming tools and gig workers affect the fight for fair compensation and fair work practices these days? \nManny’s never turns away someone due to lack of funds. If you need a complimentary ticket\, please email the title of the event and the word “grapefruit” to angelina@welcometomannys.com \nWant to support community members? By purchasing a “Pay It Forward” ticket you will allow us to provide free tickets to those who may not be able to afford entry otherwise and ensure we can create a diverse socio-economic audience that represents San Francisco. \nAbout Rudy Gonzalez: \nRudy Gonzalez carried his first Union card at the age of 18 as a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. After serving the rank and file as shop steward\, he volunteered as a member organizer and learned to campaign in the South\, where he saw firsthand the struggle that workers face when they attempt to unionize under hostile conditions. \nInformed by his Catholic upbringing’s social justice doctrine and motivated by a sense of stewardship instilled by his father’s lifelong career as a firefighter\, he found purpose in building power for workers. \nIn 2008\, he was hired as a full-time Business Representative and Organizer for Teamsters 856. He negotiated private agreements under the NLRA and RLA and public sector contracts under MMBA\, EERA\, and HEERA. After rising to the rank of Organizing Director and was elected twice as Vice President. During his time at 856\, he led organizing campaigns that nearly doubled the size and strength of the local union\, which now boasts 17\,000 members. \nIn May of 2018\, Rudy was selected by his peers on the SFLC Executive Committee to assist the Council as Interim Executive Director. In August of 2018\, Rudy was nominated and elected unanimously by the Council delegates to a two-year term\, becoming the first person of color and youngest person elected in the 125-year history of the SFLC. \nAt the Labor Council\, Rudy led the staff team to assist affiliated unions with political mobilization\, contract campaigns\, and strategic organizing. Under his leadership\, the Council shored up its finances\, hired the first-ever Campaign Director\, and revamped the political and affiliate support apparatus. Rudy oversaw program expansion of the We Rise SF labor center for immigrant rights which serves workers and families with naturalization services and other immigration casework. The Council also unified labor to win both the highest minimum compensation ordinance for home care workers in the US and a citywide project labor agreement for construction workers. \nIn 2021\, Gonzalez was elected to lead the San Francisco Building & Construction Trades Council. Under his leadership\, affiliated unions won the first community workforce agreement in the State with the University of California for over 1 billion dollars in work. SUMMARY:Brava Theater: Doméstica Realidad
DESCRIPTION:Doméstica Realidad is a captivating piece where comedy and social awareness merge into an unforgettable theatrical experience. It’s a collective creation about the unresolved conflict between women and the domestic space. \nThree domestic situations explore hierarchical relationships\, contradictions\, and conflicts in an activity historically relegated to the female universe. A nauseating smell\, the source of which is unknown\, reveals that something in the house is rotting. Three possible variations of a state of affairs\, with no temporal order\, no apparent succession. A house\, which is maintained as background\, gives a general framework to the story\, the place that enables these contradictions\, dominations and abuses: “What happens indoors\, stays indoors”\, says one of the characters. \nThese stories come from a documentary work that included interviews with employees and employers\, telephone surveys\, readings and discussions of research on domestic employment. Doméstica Realidad deals with intimate\, generational and political dilemmas that come into play in the ‘domestic’ arena. \nPlaywrights\nNatalia Burgueño\, Etelvina Rodríguez\, Camila Sanson\, Florencia Dansilio & Sofía Espinosa \nEnsemble\nDyana Diaz – Carla Gallardo – Deborah Cortez \nMusic and Lyrics\nPatricia Turnes \nDirector\nVirginia Blanco \nTICKETS\n$25 general admission\n$50 La Lengua supporter (priority seats)\n$100 La Lengua mecenas (priority seats + 1 free drink)\nPay-what-you-can on Thursday 08/03
