SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Desserts - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Desserts teaches you how to wrap up your home-cooked meals with everyone’s favorite course. Because we know there are never enough sweets\, we will craft three different dishes in this class! \nTo get started we will whip up a gluten-free and seasonal Blood Orange Meringue Pie. Talk about a show-stopper: it will begin with the simplicity of a press-n pistachio crust. Then on to making a citrus curd\, as we thicken and sweeten crimson blood orange juice into our filling. Topped with the science-heavy light as air clouds of an Italian meringue\, and grab your spoons in one hand and your phone in the other for this dessert. \nThen onto cookies\, with everyone’s favorite dunker biscotti. Want to learn to bake? What could be better than something called “twice-baked”? Measuring\, scaling\, and other precision excursions into the world of pastry\, plus the use of a savory herb just to ground Chef Mike in this world of sugar. \nFinally\, we will wrap up this dessert tour with the childhood favorite chocolate pudding\, all grown up and fancy. We will learn the basics of thickening (as if three desserts weren’t thickening enough!) with cornstarch and eggs\, and talk about chocolate as we use it in three forms for this dessert. Just to make it interesting we will add in a touch of chocolate’s ancient partner chile to make this a more grown up option. The class will also include a hearty salad and an array of cheeses and snacks\, as we know we cannot live on sweets alone. \nMENU \nBlood Orange Meringue Pie with Pistachio Crust \nRosemary\, Almond\, Orange Biscotti \nGrown up Chocolate Pudding \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: egg\, wheat\, dairy\, tree nuts. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. SUMMARY:111 Minna Gallery: The Bay Area 5 - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:111 Minna Gallery is pleased to present their latest project\, ‘The Bay Area 5’ featuring the works of five renowned and highly prolific Bay Area artists. \nOpening on April 20th 2023\, the Bay Area 5 will feature the works of Max Ehrman (Eon 75)\, Seibot\, Nicole Hayden\, Josh Thurman\, and Messy Beck. All five of these artists have been active in the Bay Area throughout the last decade (and longer) creating murals throughout the streets of San Francisco\, the greater Bay Area and abroad. Ranging from backgrounds starting in graffiti\, street art\, illustration\, architecture and fine art; all of these artists have come to make a name for themselves in the Bay with full building-size murals\, expansive street art projects\, dozens of community-driven storefront murals during the pandemic and privately commissioned murals for clients ranging from small businesses in San Francisco to The Googleplex in Mountain View\, Ca. \nMax Ehrman goes under the moniker ‘Eon 75’ meaning Extermination.Of.Normality and 1975\, his birth year. Gaining much of his inspiration from studying architecture in Florida and Germany\, Max has painted murals and exhibited work in 10 countries and 3 continents. He has traveled with the ‘Meeting of Styles’ creating large scale works throughout Europe\, Asia and South America. \nSeibot (KT Seibert) is an extremely queer\, trans non-binary visual artist and muralist based in San Francisco. KT works primarily in acrylic and latex paint\, metal leaf\, ink\, glitter additives\, and high gloss finishes. KT is the co-owner of Moth Belly Gallery\, located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. \nNicole Hayden’s work explores a juxtaposition between pattern and figurative realism. She uses imagery from photos and magazines from the 1950s-60s with a vintage color palette to ignite a feeling of nostalgia. She intuitively marries this imagery underneath a colorful patterned foreground with the intention of creating a new open ended story for the viewer to interpret. \nJosh Thurman’s new works explore the combination of making 2D pieces look 3D\, and 3D pieces look 2D. His process of layering wood of different thicknesses provides a unique viewing experience from different angles making his oil paintings look 3D and lifelike. His work explores subjects ranging from cultural iconography to various pop culture based fan art all the way to original characters of his own creation. \nMessy Beck is a painter\, illustrator and muralist. Her work showcases narratives that explore themes of identity\, mental health and human connection. The contrast between her inviting color palettes and uniquely peculiar figures yield paintings that are constantly navigating a fine line between celebratory and disturbing. \nFeaturing art by:\nMax Ehrman (Eon 75) – @maxehrman\nSeibot – @seibot\nNicole Hayden – @nicolehaydenart\nJosh Thurman – @thurmanart\nMessy Beck – @messybeck \nEvent Info:\nWhat: ‘THE BAY AREA 5’\n	Music by DJ David Choong Lee\nWhen:\n Opening Reception Thursday 4/20/23 from 5:00 PM – 10:00 P M\n Open By Appointment Saturday 4/22/23 – 7/06/23 – reach out to:dyoungv@111minnagallery.com\n Closing Party Thursday 6/29/23\n Art Coming Down Thursday 7/06/23\nWhere: 111 Minna Gallery at 111 Minna St\, San Francisco\, CA 94105 \nAbout 111 Minna Gallery\nOver its 28 years\, 111 Minna Gallery has been recognized as: Winner: Best Art Gallery (2019 & 2018/SF Weekly)\, Winner of the Small Business of the Year Award (2018/SF Chamber of Commerce)\, and Winner of the 2018 Small Business of The Year Award at The Ebbies. 111 Minna continues to be a mainstay for art and culture in the bay area. DESCRIPTION:SYNC Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Eli Keszler \n \nFor two nights only on April 20 and 21\, join us for SYNC\, an audiovisual collaboration between Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and percussionist\, composer\, and artist\, Eli Keszler\, originally commissioned by Pace Live.\nCome experience this special performance amid Lozano-Hemmer’s groundbreaking exhibition TECHS-MECHS\, while supporting Gray Area’s year of ACCESS programming. \nThe evening will open with an artist talk from Lozano-Hemmer\, followed by “Sync”\, an audiovisual collaboration between Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Eli Keszler\, originally commissioned by PACE Live.\nA multi-instrumentalist and visual artist\, Eli Keszler has previously worked with Kevin Beasley\, Oneohtrix Point Never\, Skrillex\, and more. For “Sync”\, Keszler will activate Lozano-Hemmer’s immersive installation “Pulse Topology” with his distinctive drumming style\, creating “a morphing geography of light.” Keszler’s performances at Gray Area can be understood as “Beat Minimalism” for the 21st century.\nMaking its west coast premiere as part of TECHS-MECHS\, “Pulse Topology” is a mesmerizing work composed of 3\,000 suspended lightbulbs that glimmer in tune with the heartbeats of different participants from the past. Pulse sensors detect and record new heartbeats\, which replace the oldest ones\, creating a memento mori. \n𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥\nRafael Lozano-Hemmer: TECHS-MECHS is a tribute to the rich Mexican technological cultural history\, and a celebration of San Francisco’s Mission District— a historic center of the city’s Latinx and Mexican-American communities. Since opening two weeks ago\, 26% of attendees have been local residents of the Mission District who received free admission through our community program. \n𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐒 \n𝐄𝐥𝐢 𝐊𝐞𝐬𝐳𝐥𝐞𝐫\nA multi-instrumentalist\, Eli Keszler has released numerous solo albums\, his most recent being ICONS (2021\, LuckyMe)\, and presented his work at The Kitchen in New York; Lincoln Center\, the MIT List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge\, Massachusetts; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, and other spaces around the world. He has previously worked with Kevin Beasley\, Oneohtrix Point Never\, Skrillex\, and many more artists. \n𝐑𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐋𝐨𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐨-𝐇𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫\nRafael Lozano-Hemmer was born in Mexico City in 1967. In 1989 he received a B.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Concordia University in Montréal\, Canada. A media artist working at the intersection of architecture and performance art\, Lozano-Hemmer creates platforms for public participation using technologies such as robotic lights\, digital fountains\, computerized surveillance\, media walls\, and telematic networks. Inspired by phantasmagoria\, carnival\, and animatronics\, his light and shadow works are “antimonuments for alien agency”.

Cantonese cuisine is the cuisine of the Guangdong province of China\, particularly the provincial capital Guangzhou\, and the surrounding regions in the Pearl River Delta including Hong Kong and Macau. The popularity of this cuisine outside of China is due to the widespread influence of Cantonese emigrants. The cuisine is known for mild\, fresh\, and slightly sweet flavors\, where the ingredients’ natural flavors are given center stage. Deep frying\, braising\, stir frying\, and steaming are key techniques covered in this class\, plus how to cook rice without a rice cooker! \nYou will use a pantry of salt\, sugar\, sesame\, soy sauce\, and a high-heat neutral oil (ex. grapeseed\, rice bran) and add to it no more than 5 other ingredients per recipe. If you’re looking for new weeknight meal ideas or feel overwhelmed by the breadth of Asian pantry ingredients and don’t know where to start\, join us. Let’s cook classic Cantonese dishes together! \nMENU \nSalt & Pepper Shrimp with Wok Salt \nSoy Sauce Chicken with Ginger Scallion Sauce \nPea Shoots with Garlic \nSteamed Minced Pork with 3 Kinds of Eggs \nAlmond Mungbean Cookie \nPerfect Stovetop Rice \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Shellfish\, Egg\, Soy\, Tree Nuts\, Peanuts\, Wheat. For the last 18 years\, Linda has shared her passion and knowledge of East and Southeast Asian cuisines in the Bay Area by teaching at many notable cooking schools in the Bay Area.
