SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Masa Madness: Cakes\, Cookies and Conchas - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nMasa madness is back—and this time\, right as the baking season begins. You may be familiar with savory cooking involving masa harina\, but what do you know about baking with it? In this class\, we will be playing with a variety of heirloom masa harina—red\, blue\, and yellow—for one sweet evening. \nWe will make Mexican corn cake\, chamomile corn conchas (the traditional seashell sweet bread with a twist)\, and a batch of cookies kissed with corn for sparkle and crunch. You will learn two methods to infuse and build blocks of flavor and deepen your appreciation for an ingredient all too often only associated with tortillas. The evening will finish around a dinner of tostadas topped with refried beans and all the fixings. \nMENU \nPastel de Elote | Corn Cake \nConchas de Manzanilla y Elote | Chamomile Corn Conchas \nGalletas de Oro | Golden Cookies \nAlongside a tasting of the baked goods\, a light dinner will be served: Tostadas with refried beans\, lettuce\, tomatoes\, guacamole and cotija cheese \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Egg\, Tree Nuts\, Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nAnnelies Zijderveld teaches with a California twist\, bringing the brightness of Bay Area produce onto the plate. Proudly Mexican-Bolivian-Dutch American\, she specializes in Mexican (including TexMex + CalMex) and Bolivian cooking classes and private classes. If you’re looking to eat vegetarian/vegan\, check out one of her eat more meatless cooking classes with ideas for omnivores and plant-based eaters. Author of Steeped: Recipes Infused with Tea\, a Los Angeles Times notable book\, she writes about food for epicurious\, the Kitchn\, Simply Recipes\, EatingWell\, and others.

SUMMARY:The Chapel: Jack Symes & The River House Band
DESCRIPTION:$18 Advance and $22 Day of Show \nMake a night of it and have dinner and drinks at Curio before the show! Reservations are available HERE. \nWebsite | Spotify | YouTube | Instagram \nFor information on our current COVID policy\, please click here. \nJACK SYMES \n“The River House\,” beyond being a straight-to-tape album with loveable moods and a full rainbow of emotions\, is really a successful proof of concept. If you put good people with open minds and hearts into a cabin together for a week\, regardless of how well they might know each other\, you’re going to get something special. \nThe attractive tendency for artists is to “Play Producer.” They stress the importance of minute decisions and stand very seriously\, preferably with arms crossed\, while listening back to a take. Here they assess which potentially perfect idea is the ‘missing ingredient\,’ and attempt to play the Divine\, summoning it from the ether. \nThis was not the process of “The River House.” \nAt the River House we hung out. We jammed. We said “Go on…” \nWhile Jack Symes has already established himself as a clever and unique songwriter\, this album shows a very obvious step forward in the depth\, range\, and dynamism of his writer’s voice. And while we hear his growth as both a writer and guitar player\, the album is perhaps the first example of something else that makes Jack different from other artists: his thoughtful leadership. \nJack believes in people. He is a listener that empowers those around him\, and is true to his Pillars of Focus: Vibe\, Energy\, and Good Communication. He understands that when you trust in people and take your hands off the wheel\, Magic has space to breathe and hopefully enough room to shake its ass. The musicians (Rob Shelton\, Steven van Betten\, Gregory Ackerman\, and yours truly)\, producer (Dillon Casey)\, and host/pied piper for a good time (Daniel Nally)\, were hand picked awith these pillars in mind. Then we were given that trust. \nWith the pieces set\, wined and dined\, the band assumed their positions with the amps hot and not a headphone in sight\, Dillon rolled tape\, and there we stayed for 8 euphoric days. \nMany people will listen to this album and many will turn it off because it is too long\, too meandering\, and let’s be honest\, asking too much of their deeply traumatized attention spans. But that is exactly why those who love it will love it Deeply. It’s not like everything else\, and the further you let yourself in\, the more you will find and the more you will love. It was made with love\, and I agree wholeheartedly with the decision not to trim its length\, nor its intros and outros. We don’t need more neat packages in the world. We need magic\, preferably of the real variety. Jack Symes and The River House is certainly that. At least that’s the way I feel. \nWritten by John Fatum (drums and percussion)

Please only register if you plan to attend all three sessions. \nSERIES SUMMARY: \nPart I: Sustainable Garden Design This workshop will teach you how to design a beautiful\, functional\, and thriving home garden space. San Francisco urban gardens come with all sorts of unique challenges (fog\, wind\, steep hillsides\, sandy soil) and it can be difficult to know where to start. Instructor Ellyn will provide information to help you evaluate and design garden spaces and choose plants to match the space\, a principle called “Right Plant\, Right Place”. \nPart II: Water-Wise Gardening This workshop will take a more detailed look at the many beautiful plants that grow well in San Francisco and how you can care for them without using lots of water. Even with San Francisco’s dry and foggy summers\, there is an amazing palate of climate-appropriate plants that will thrive here with little or no summer water so that you can conserve water and save on your bill. Instructor Ellyn will teach you about all of this and also about how to water your plants properly and group them by similar water needs to help them reach their full potential. \nPart III: Organic Pest Control Learn how a healthy and biodiverse garden can thrive without the use of pesticides. Ellyn will discuss the notion that most plant health problems are caused by poor growing conditions or improper planting\, and that pests and diseases may be secondary problems. Plant health care involves a combination of strategies including monitoring\, and you’ll learn strategies to attract beneficial insects\, and keep pests\, diseases\, and weeds at bay naturally. \nInstructor Ellyn Shea is a Bay Area gardener\, garden coach\, Certified Arborist\, consultant\, and educator. She is a longtime Garden for the Environment teacher and supporter and shares her extensive gardening knowledge in this workshop series. \nCOVID-19 information: \n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.

Review our registration and cancellation policies here. \nLet’s feast\, Provençal style! Le Grand Aioli is a special occasion in the South of France that embodies conviviality and community. Our tables will hold a vivid spread of food: a variety of vegetables picked at their peak and simply cooked\, plus an array of seafood (typically cod\, mussels and clams). These elements surround the star of the show: aioli. You may think of aioli as simply garlicky mayonnaise\, but when traditionally prepared by hand with a mortar and pestle\, aioli transforms into a distinctively better version! \nTo accompany this full spread\, we’ll make a seasonal fruit galette topped with Bi-Rite vanilla ice cream. We can’t wait to dine with you! \nMENU \nRadish Butter with Chives & Flaky Sea Salt \nSteamed Mussels with Shallots & Garlic in a White Wine Broth \nSteamed Cod with Sorel Compound Butter & Vermouth Cooked in Parchment \nPerfectly Jammy Eggs \nSalt Packed Baby Potatoes\, Yellow Wax Beans\, Baby Zucchini\, Gem Lettuces\n*Vegetables subject change depending on seasonal availability. \nServed with Traditional Aioli made in a Mortar Pestle \nSeasonal Fruit Galette Served with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Fish\, Tree Nuts\, Dairy\, Wheat. She graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and worked in restaurants in France while she wrote and published her first cookbook – a collection of family recipes influenced by her multicultural upbringing. She now lives in San Francisco\, where she works in the non-profit culinary world and hosts online cooking demonstrations. Music In-Takht is committed to serving the San Francisco Bay Area community with the highest professional standard of musical performance. The ensemble members are devoted musicians who value the mission of this ensemble and with humility\, hard work\, and confidence in their abilities they take the responsibility of being among the “Keepers” of Egyptian musical culture within the San Francisco Bay Area. \nBasma Edrees is the founder of Music In-Takht. She is a violinist\, performer\, and educator based in the SF Bay Area. Passionate about introducing the world to the rich music of her native country\, Egypt\, Edrees has given Arabic music workshops at UC Berkeley and Stanford. She also taught Arabic music and European counterpoint at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is currently on the violin faculty of Santa Clara University’s Department of Music. A graduate of the Mannes School of Music and The Juilliard School in New York\, Edrees also enjoys a career playing and teaching European classical music. \nMoe is a self-taught oudist who started his musical journey in 2006 as a guitarist in Cairo’s progressive rock scene. After releasing an album as part of the duo “Auburn Mary”\, Moe developed a strong interest in modal improvisation and jazz fusion. He found his way to Arabic music through early 20th-century influences of Abdel Wahab and El-Qasabgi\, as well as the improvisation-oriented folk traditions around the Mediterranean. Moe pursued his studies in Maqam theory at the Canadian Arabic Conservatory of Music and is committed to serving local music. \nMohamed Abdelradi is one of Egypt’s prominent percussionists. He performed and continues to perform with some of the most renowned singers of Egypt and the Arab world\, most notably Hamid El Shaeri\, as well as Mohamed Mounir; who pioneered the spread of Nubian music and its influence into the musical language of Egypt as a whole\, making it an intrinsic part of all Egyptians’ musical identity. \nhttps://basmaedreesviolin.com/new-page-2
