SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Earth Mama
DESCRIPTION:Gia is a young mother fighting for her children. Her son and daughter are in foster care\, and now her unborn child could also be taken away. Struggling to work enough hours with court-mandated classes\, she’s barely making ends meet. Gia loves her children unconditionally\, but how will she give them the future they deserve? \nSavanah Leaf’s directorial feature debut is an intimate depiction of a mother’s fear and love. Leaf’s elegant visual language interjects lush visions of hope and visceral manifestations of Gia’s deepest fears into her everyday life. Moving performances root the film in authenticity\, including that of newcomer Tia Nomore\, whose Gia is tender\, conflicted\, and layered. The warm texture of the film envelops us in Gia’s reality\, while a knowing score smiles at the beauty of everyday moments. \nBetween the backdrops of Gia’s counseling classes and portrait studio job\, Leaf crafts a story that redefines perspectives and asks us to bear witness — to vulnerability and the desire to be seen. Leaf’s permeating vision brings fullness and complexity to Gia\, reclaiming her humanity and honoring the different forms love can take. – Sundance. \nWritten & directed by Savanah Leaf. With Tia Nomore\, Erika Alexander\, Doechii\, Sharon Duncan-brewster\, Dominic Fike & Bokeem Woodbine.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Carne trémula [Live Flesh]
DESCRIPTION:Taut and torrid\, Live Flesh delivers everything you could possibly want from a 90s erotic thriller: smoldering glances\, smoking guns and heaps of high-class carnality. Approaching Dostoevsky by way of Eszterhas\, Almodóvar sharpens a paperback tale of infidelity and revenge into a something both poetic and political. Pared-down by its director’s florid standards\, Live Flesh still surprises at every turn – nowhere more vividly than in Javier Bardem’s portrayal of David\, a cop-turned-Paralympian trying to save his marriage after the assailant whose bullet put him in a wheelchair is released from prison. Intense\, athletic and uncontainable\, Bardem pushes Almodóvar to new kinetic and expressive heights\, yielding some of the director’s most viscerally thrilling sequences to date. While its technique and emotional depth paved the way for the masterpieces to come\, Live Flesh also satisfies a more basic moviegoing lust – for unadulterated popcorn.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: LGBTQIA+ Asylum Communities: A Private Documentary Screening and Panel
DESCRIPTION:jardines: While waiting in limbo\, displaced LGBTQ+ folks hoping to find asylum in the United States find support and healing with one another\, as they process the heartbreak and joy of a queer family on the move. \nSet in a one of the few LGBTQ+ shelters in Tijuana\, jardines is an intimate portrait documenting the life experiences and trajectories unique to displaced queer folks as they flee violence and persecution in their home countries. It is in this limbo where the film happens\, sitting with residents of the shelter in their present\, as strangers become friends and family that might share together moments of joy and grief\, sorrow and hope. \nWe will be joined by the filmaker Alfredo Torres and Adam Chang from Oasis Legal Services to discuss the film afterwards. \nAbout Oasis Legal Services \nOasis Legal Services provides legal assistance with asylum\, residency\, naturalization\, VAWA\, and family petitions for LGBTQIA+ immigrant communities. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening reception of Paola de la Calle’s In This House We Are All Buried Alive on Friday\, July 28\, 7:30–10:00 PM PST. \nDrawing inspiration from Colombian poet María Mercedes Carranza’s piece “La Patria” (“The Motherland”)\, De la Calle threads together personal and collective memory to repair the ruptures of historical amnesia. \nThrough her multidisciplinary practice\, her debut solo exhibition examines the relationship between power and memory. What becomes the memory of a culture? Of a family? Who benefits when memories are forgotten? \nStay tuned for upcoming announcements! \nAbout Paola de la Calle \nPaola de la Calle is a Colombian-American multidisciplinary artist whose work examines home\, identity\, borders\, and nostalgia through the use of textiles\, printmaking\, and sculpture. In her practice\, De la Calle combines photographs sourced from family albums and found images which she prints on textiles\, as well as poetic texts\, paintings made with coffee instead of paint\, and found objects\, to mine the aesthetics of nostalgia and examine the socio-political relationship between the United States and Colombia. \nShe is a graduate of the New York Foundation of the Arts Immigrant Artist Program in 2019 and the lead artist for the Caravan for the Children Campaign as part of her residency with Galeria de la Raza in 2020. She’s a KALA Fellowship Award recipient and currently Artist-in-Residence at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn\, NY. She’s been featured on Hyperallergic’s “A View from the Easel”\, NPR\, The Boston Art Review\, and VOGUE among others. \nVisit Paola de la Calle’s website to learn more: http://www.paoladelacalle.com/

SUMMARY:Garden for the Environment: Summer Fruit Tree Pruning
DESCRIPTION:Fruit trees require year-round care\, and summer pruning is critical to their health. Summer pruning allows air and light to reach fruits and lower branches\, controls growth on vigorous trees\, helps direct a tree’s shape\, and is an opportunity to remove dead\, damaged\, and dying wood. Our expert instructors will teach general pruning techniques\, discuss the differences between summer and winter pruning\, and lead a hands-on demonstration so you can learn which cuts will keep your trees healthy and productive. \nFollowing the workshop\, you can put your newfound skills to use! Feel free to bring a lunch and eat with GFE staff and volunteers\, and then at 1pm\, join a group of fellow workshop participants and others from the GFE community to prune our orchard trees. \nYour expert instructors Jamie Chan and Blas Herrera are natives of San Francisco. They tend a small homestead in San Francisco with their two girls\, complete with honey bees\, chickens\, greenhouse\, mini-orchard\, and vegetables. Blas has a degree in environmental studies\, a certificate in sustainable design from the Urban Permaculture Institute of San Francisco and currently is assistant director of education at CuriOdyssey\, Zoo and Science Museum. Jamie has an MS in science and a doctorate in education from SF State University. She is a certified UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and is currently director of programs at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park (which includes the SF Botanical Garden\, Conservatory of Flowers\, and Japanese Tea Garden). In their free time\, you can find them volunteering at their local community greenspace Sisterhood Gardens and running their garden education company @FogCityGardener. \nCOVID-19 information: \n GFE Mask Guidelines: Masks are optional for vaccinated visitors (workshop participants\, volunteers\, students etc.) and required for unvaccinated individuals. Our staff is fully vaccinated and boosted. Thank you for continuing to keep the garden a safe and open space for everyone!\n Please bring your own gardening gloves for possible hands-on activities.\n Please cancel your shift and do not come to GFE if you develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of your workshop (fever\, chills\, repeated shaking / shivering\, cough\, sore throat\, shortness of breath\, difficulty breathing\, feeling unusually weak or fatigued\, new loss of taste or smell\, muscle pain\, headache\, runny or congested nose\, or diarrhea)\n GFE will continue to monitor the COVID19 situation in San Francisco and make any necessary changes to the workshop based on current information. \nNo walk-up registration permitted for this course.
