SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: In the Summers
DESCRIPTION:Siblings Violeta and Eva live in California with their mother\, but every summer they travel to Las Cruces\, New Mexico\, to spend time with their loving but unpredictable father\, Vicente (René “Residente” Pérez Joglar). Over the course of four formative summers that span adolescence to early adulthood\, Violeta and Eva learn to appreciate their father as a person\, his flaws and limitations inseparable from his passion and tenderness. Lovers come and go\, the backyard goes to seed\, but the idea of home remains knotty and elusive. This powerful and deeply personal directorial debut from Alessandra Lacorazza offers a nuanced study of young people questioning their place within their families\, their communities\, and their identities.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Chungking Express
DESCRIPTION:The whiplash\, double-pronged “Chungking Express” is one of the defining works of nineties cinema and the film that made Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai an instant icon. Two heartsick Hong Kong cops (Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung)\, both jilted by ex-lovers\, cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out restaurant stand\, where the ethereal pixie waitress Faye (Faye Wong) works. Anything goes in Wong’s gloriously shot and utterly unexpected charmer\, which cemented the sex appeal of its gorgeous stars and forever turned canned pineapple and the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’” into tokens of romantic longing. This recent 4K digital restoration was undertaken from the 35mm original camera negative by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with L’Immagine Ritrovata\, Jet Tone\, One Cool\, and 3H Sound Studio. It was supervised and approved by Wong Kar Wai.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: Vote With Your Phone
DESCRIPTION:Our democracy is broken because the way we vote is broken. But there is a solution: Mobile Voting. \nGun control. Abortion. From the halls of Congress\, it may seem that Americans are bitterly polarized on the biggest policy issues of the day. But Americans are not as divided as we think\, and polls show that most of us largely agree on even the most divisive issues. The problem lies in how we vote. \nPolitics is becoming more extreme because only the most extreme voters turn out in primaries. And with politicians prioritizing reelection above all else\, they shun compromise\, feed this extremism\, and get rewarded for it. If a lot more people vote\, the views of the electorate will become more mainstream\, and our politicians and policies will shift. \nMobile voting is the solution. We do just about everything on our phones\, and yet we still can’t use them to vote. But the technology exists\, provides enhanced security over traditional paper ballots\, and could exponentially increase voter turnout by: \n Allowing Americans to vote from anywhere\, on their own schedule\n Making voting more accessible for people with visual impairments or for military service members—and their families—overseas\n Incentivizing younger voters to participate by using technology they’re familiar with \nFrom Bradley Tusk\, philanthropist and founder of the Mobile Voting Project\, comes a deeply informative and timely analysis of our broken voting system\, introducing us to the history\, opposition\, and potential of voting from our phones. Including essays by Martin Luther King III\, Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar\, and other prominent figures in the cybersecurity and voting rights communities\, Vote With Your Phone shows us that the solution to restoring faith in our democracy is right in the palm of our hands.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Borderland: The Line Within
DESCRIPTION:Q&A with director Pamela Yates and producer Paco de Onís! \nThere is a war on immigrants being waged every day in our country\, and not just along the southern border – we have become a Borderland\, the border is everywhere and within every immigrant. A massive surveillance\, militarized and carceral apparatus has been built to capture\, imprison and deport millions of immigrants. If Trump becomes president again\, he vows to round up and force mass deportation of immigrants regardless of documentation status. \nIn Borderland | The Line Within a trio of digital humanists\, immigrants themselves\, dig deep into the hidden apparatus of the border industrial complex\, exposing ruthless profiteering from the suffering of fellow humans. In juxtaposition\, the stories of immigrant heroines and heroes forge a way forward\, intent on building a movement claiming their human rights in the shadow of this behemoth. The protagonists’ engagement with each other via text\, zoom\, voice and in person\, crafts our storylines into one coherent whole\, envisioning a future for immigrants rooted in human connection and the sanctity of life. \nFive years in the making\, Borderland continues the cinematic journey that Director Pamela Yates has taken us on for the past 40 years\, beginning with When The Mountains Tremble\, Granito: How to Nail a Dictator and 500 Years. \nDirected by Pamela Yates. Produced by Paco de Onís.

Join Brian for an evening of laughing… but more importantly\, for an evening of THINKING as he explores how to deal with a family member who’s all in for the Donald when you’re not\, when America was last “great\,” #MeToo and more. If you love Trump you’ll hate this show!\nAbout the Performer \nBrian Copeland has been in show business since he first stepped on the comedy stage at the tender age of 18. Soon he was headlining clubs and concerts across the country and opening for such artists as Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Ringo Starr\, and the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin\, in venues from The Universal Amphitheater to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Soon\, Copeland branched off into television\, appearing on comedy programs on NBC\, A&E and MTV. He spent five years as co-host of San Francisco FOX affiliate KTVU breakfast program Mornings on 2 and two years hosting San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO’s Emmy Award winning afternoon talker 7Live. \nIn 1995\, ABC affiliate KGO Radio premiered “The Brian Copeland Show”. \nIt’s unique mix of talk and entertainment soon made it the most listened to program in its time slot. Copeland branched out into theater in 2004 with his first solo play\, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. This critically acclaimed exploration of race and identity created an audience pleasing blend of laughter\, tears and sociology that led to the show becoming the longest running solo play in San Francisco theatrical history. Successful runs in Los Angeles and Off Broadway and a bestselling book adaptation followed. GENUINE has been performed in over 30 cities across America. The play is currently in development with Rob Reiner’s Castlerock Entertainment for television. \nCopeland’s other theatrical work includes THE WAITING PERIOD\, a solo play about his lifelong struggle with depression and the Christmas play THE JEWELRY BOX\, THE SCION\, and THE GREAT AMERICAN SH*T SHOW with Charlie Varon. \nHe has also appeared in the films THE BUCKET LIST and the Marvel’s VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE. \nBrian’s latest work\, GRANDMA & ME won the 2023 SF Bay Area Broadway World Award for Solo Performance. His first crime novel\, OUTRAGED\, about the police shootings of unarmed African Americans\, was released nationwide on April 23. \nThe book version of GENUINE is available on Amazon and is taught in high schools and colleges across the country.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Basquiat
DESCRIPTION:Now in black and white and newly restored! \nNo painter electrified the 1980s art scene like Jean-Michel Basquiat\, a New York street kid whose visionary blending of expressionism\, pop art\, and the radical new aesthetics of hip-hop and graffiti propelled him to international fame before a tragic early demise. Julian Schnabel’s stunning debut charts Basquiat’s dizzying rise and fall with an insider’s eye for authentic details of the downtown arts demimonde as well as a fellow postmodernist’s interest in the dream-like and surreal. Jeffrey Wright’s brilliant introductory performance provides trenchant insight into the artist’s creative passions and personal demons. Cemented by David Bowie as a spot-on Andy Warhol\, Basquiat’s supporting cast is a murderers’ row of Hollywood legends and art lovers (Dennis Hopper\, Gary Oldman\, Benicio del Toro\, Parker Posey\, Christopher Walken\, Willem Dafoe) lending their talents to one of the high points of 90s independent cinema\, an intimate elegy for a once-in-a-generation artistic phenomenon.

SUMMARY:Roxie Theater: Audition
DESCRIPTION:Part of You Are So Cursed: J-Horror Classics \nOne of the most infamous\, impactful\, and gut-wrenching Japanese horror films ever made returns to the big screen! Recent widower (and movie producer) Shigeharu is looking for a new wife. But instead of going the usual route\, he decides to hold “auditions” for a movie that doesn’t exist. Shigeharu quickly becomes enchanted with Asami\, a spooky twenty-something who is responsive to his charms. But things aren’t what they seem. AUDITION was the turn-of-the-millenium flash point that signaled the talent of Takashi Miike (ICHI THE KILLER). With this movie\, Miike delivers a nerve-shredding exploration of male fears and the stereotype of submissive Japanese women. SUMMARY:111 Minna Gallery: Portal by Attaboy and Here Comes The Howellman by Jay Howell (opening reception)
DESCRIPTION:‘PORTAL’ Solo Exhibition by Attaboy\n‘HERE COMES THE HOWELLMAN” Solo Exhibition by Jay Howell\n111 Minna Gallery \nOPENING RECEPTION: Friday\, October 11th 2024 \nFor their October exhibition 11 Minna Gallery will be showcasing two powerhouses in the art world\, Jay Howell and Attaboy. Jay Howell will be displaying his solo exhibition ‘Here Comes the Howellman’ in 111 Minna’s 2nd Street Gallery. Attaboy will be displaying his solo exhibition ‘Portal’ in 111 Minna’s Zappa Gallery. \nThis will be the first time former 111 Minna Curator (2007-2012) Jay Howell has exhibited in San Francisco since his solo exhibition ‘Pages From Books’ at Fecal Face in 2012. This will be the first solo exhibition Hi Fructose magazine co-founder Attaboy has displayed at 111 Minna. \nAbout JAY HOWELL \nJay Howell is a Los Angeles based illustrator\, artist and cartoonist who lives with his dog\, Street Dog. \nExposed to Punk music and Skateboard culture at an early age. Howell immediately identified with their shared DIY ethos\, inspiring him to self-publish his own zines\, cartoons\, animations and skateboard graphics. Best known for his work as the character designer for Fox’s hit show “Bob’s Burgers”. Howell is also known for his success as the co-creator\, art director and executive producer of “Sanjay And Craig”; an animated children’s show for Nickelodeon. Howell’s unique line-style\, eccentric characters\, carefree wit and no-permissions-asked artistic approach has been exhibited around the world and garnered collaboration with brands such as Vans\, Gucci and Playboy. \nYou can follow Jay Howell on instagram @punkgitcut \nAbout ATTABOY: \nWith a commitment to creating and curating surprising forms of visual art\, Daniel “Attaboy” Seifert has forged a varied career\, often fusing together subversion with disconcerting whimsy. Attaboy’s work has been seen in books\, magazines\, galleries\, museums\, television and many designer stores. His influences include Alexander Calder\, Yayoi Kusama\, Maurice Nobel\, Eyvinde Earle\, and the futurist Syd Mead. \nIn June 2019\, Seifert inadvertently created an international underground holiday; his one day Game of Shrooms Art N Seek event has grown across the globe. Now thousands of artists across the world create and hide original artwork for collectors (and the unassuming) to find. Artists and gatherers from Hong Kong\, Berlin\, Japan\, the UK\, India\, Russia\, Switzerland\, the US\, Antarctica\, and many more participate in the world-wide event\, creating a world-wide non-religious\, no cost\, political-free interactive “art show” of making and sharing. The event spread viral on Instagram as an art making holiday and is set to be repeated on June 14th\, 2025. \nIn 2005 artists Annie Owens and Attaboy co-founded Hi-Fructose magazine\, which has become a best selling art magazine with a global reach. In 2009\, in order to better define the scope of the magazine\, New Contemporary Art was added to the masthead. Since then\, the term has been adopted by many galleries\, museums and artists. \nHi-Fructose: The New Contemporary Art Magazine was honored with a ten year retrospective titled “Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose“\, which premiered at the Virginia MOCA\, and traveled to the Akron Museum of Art and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento\, CA. The publication has spawned a popular series of hardcover books\, elaborately designed box sets\, curated shows\, and a recent Hi-Fructose hardcover distributed by Abrams books focused on New Contemporary Fashion. Atta has done numerous talks and presentations at art schools\, companies\, book stores\, museums and galleries\, Topics have included discussing his creative process\, his former career as a toy designer\, his children’s books\, his partnership with Annie Owens\, creating concepts from scratch and finding inspiration in unlikely places. \nAtta and Annie live in Richmond California with the ghosts of their dogs Donut and Ripley the one-eyed wonder dog. \nYou can follow Attaboy on instagram @attayumfactory

SUMMARY:ODC Theater: AXIS Dance - Ecos
DESCRIPTION:AXIS Dance Company presents Ecos\, featuring a lineup of three world premieres with special guest artists Post:ballet. The evening features works from award-winning Spanish choreographer Jorge Crecis\, celebrated Bay Area artist Dazaun Soleyn\, and AXIS Artistic Director Nadia Adame. Across these diverse artistic perspectives\, Ecos unveils the many complex layers of the human experience to illuminate the core of what moves us forward. \nThe evening begins with Adame’s Piel de Luna\, which draws inspiration from the mystical energy of the moon – exploring how its gravitational pull not only affects the tides but also weaves invisible threads connecting the human spirit. Following is Soleyn’s Harmony of Souls\, a duet which blurs the boundaries between our individual and interconnected experience. The evening closes with Crecis’ epic Blueprints of Being\, a collaboration with Post:ballet in which each dancer represents both a real individual and an emblematic archetype\, inviting audiences to see parts of their own stories and identities echoed on stage. \nFounded in 1987\, AXIS Dance Company is one of the nation’s most acclaimed ensembles of disabled\, non-disabled and neurodiverse performers\, based in the Bay Area\, California. AXIS is led by Artistic Director Nadia Adame and creates world-class productions that challenge perceptions and redefine dance and disability. Alongside our artistic programming\, the Company provides unparalleled integrated dance education and outreach programs that remove barriers and showcase the beauty of difference.

It explores the vibrant\, layered\, and largely unknown social-political relationship between Guinea\, West Africa and Cuba\, forged by the transatlantic slave trade as well as the post-colonial cultural exchange that began in the 60s. Bringing together their cultural expertises\, their passion\, their senses of joy and justice\, Pedroso and Sidibe have created a unique performance built on storytelling and cultural collaboration. “Raices et Résistance” embodies the past as well as the present\, a story of Black people defining themselves through dance and music\, during and after the traumas of slavery and colonization. \nAfter independence from France\, Guinea elected socialist president Sekou Touré\, one of the African continent’s prominent independence leaders. Touré aligned closely with Cuba’s Fidel Castro\, and through this alliance came cultural exchange between the two countries. Artists were invited to festivals by the government’s of both countries\, and national music groups in Guinea\, like Bembeya Jazz\, created music with heavy Cuban influence. This story informs the collaboration between Duniya\, Arenas\, and Dance Mission in “Raíces et Résistance.” \nFree with your ticket\, you can catch a screening of the documentary short\, Cuba to Guinea\, before each show (Fridays at 6:45pm\, Saturdays 7pm\, Sundays 2pm). \nCuba to Guinea (film\, 2024)\n“Cuba to Guinea” is an immersive and poetic documentary short film\, following the research and creative process building up to the performance\, Raíces et Résistance. SUMMARY:Public Works: Sama' Abdulhadi @ As You Like It 14-Year Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 11th\, 9pm – 3am \nFull Space / 21+ / Limited Capacity \nIn addition to online presales\, tickets will also be available at the door night of. \nMain Room: \nSama’ Abdulhadi \nAnnika Wolfe \nEichef B2B Mossmoss \nLoft Hosted By Program: \nCrystallmess \nb0nitababy \nEspurr \nInfection \nAs You Like It (AYLI) and Public Works invites to celebrate 14-years of community rooted in a shared taste in quality music\, late nights and artistic self-expression. The Bay Area’s vast contributions to dance music culture run deep underground—a family tree rooted in psychedelic rave\, radical funk\, and electronic invention\, steeped in global influences. Beginning in 2010\, AYLI extended this sparkling legacy with a decade of parties dedicated to quality\, intimacy\, and an intensely local glow. \nTimelessness—reflected in AYLI’s beloved influences from Detroit and Chicago to NYC\, Paris\, London\, Tokyo\, and Berlin—as well as diversity\, evidenced by each party’s distinctive lineup\, are the crew’s watchwords\, deployed across an ever-changing techno landscape. Outdoor picnics in Golden Gate Park\, undergrounds in Oakland\, ambitious all-night affairs that brought together some of the most excitingly varied lineups of DJs and performers in Bay Area memory—these were what grew AYLI’s stature as a party powerhouse. \nOver the course of a very busy first 10 years\, AYLI debuted dozens of international and domestic touring artists—Nicolas Jaar\, Ben Klock\, Maya Jane Coles\, Peggy Gou\, and Robert Hood\, among them—while always giving an equal platform to the incredible local talent on offer\, a sophisticated balance that showcased Bay Area excellence and nurtured budding artists’ careers. An As You Like It podcast\, launched in 2011\, connected that local ethos to the global community\, featuring scores of dance music legends while broadening the Bay Area’s influence\, and introducing core AYLI players to the world. \nBut the unity of close family in a fractious time was what grounded AYLI’s essential presence on the scene. Weathering increased anti-nightlife prejudice from the authorities\, a crass tech invasion that out-priced and exiled many local artists\, and the tragic loss of several members and associates in the Ghost Ship Fire\, the AYLI crew and its devoted followers has continued to build a resilient underground movement together. \nIn the shadow of the current pandemic\, AYLI reached out to the world via its collaboration with Fault Radio\, As You Like It Coast-to-Coast\, a virtual party series\, AYLI Radio on Sutrofm.net\, and the launch of the AYLI Ground Level podcast series\, energizing and connecting the community further. \nMission Statement: \nAs You Like It (AYLI) is the result of a shared taste for quality electronic music\, late-night experiences\, and creative expression\, rooted in the underground and branching out to new heights. \nProceeds from the event will be donated to the Middle Eastern Children’s Allian (www.mecaforpeace.org) \nSAMA’ ABDULHADI BIO: \nAlthough Sama’ Abdulhadi is the first Palestinian DJ to gain international recognition\, her career really began when she left home for Beirut’s burgeoning techno scene. Plunging into Lebanon’s nightlife\, Abdulhadi gigged\, practiced\, and got inspired by the many local and international DJs gigging on the scene\, while refining her trademark set: high-octane full-bodied techno with a distinct ark\, a spectrum of moods\, or as she says: “Berlin techno\, but I perceive it in a Lebanese way.” \nAbdulhadi’s story begins in Ramallah\, Palestine’s de facto capital. Moving there from Jordan\, her place of birth\, she first connected with hip-hop and rap\, the region’s foremost alternative genre. A penchant for music was evident at an early age\, but it was the technical side that drew her in first\, leading her to study in Beirut. She returned to Palestine with a new understanding of electronic music\, and brought with her the techno genre\, inspiring a local community of artists that continues to flourish in the face of the geo-political restrictions imposed upon it as documented in the Boiler Room 4:3 short\, Palestine Underground. \nIntent on pursuing a career in Music Production\, Abdulhadi studied Audio Engineering at SAE Institute London\, the basis for two albums as Skywalker\, her former alias\, and a job in Cairo\, Egypt\, where she began working with bands and designing sound for moving picture\, including Egyptian films like “The Builders” and “Thread and Wall.” It was during this time in Egypt that Abdulhadi also trained with Oscar-winning sound designer Nicolas Becker (Sound Of Metal)\, and later partnered with Arabic music incubator Eka3 to start her own publishing agency\, Awyav. \nBeirut was both her training and testing ground\, but she was back on home turf in Ramallah when she played the 2018 Boiler Room debut that would make her a household name among international techno fans. Her 58-minute set has over ten million views to date\, an achievement shared by a very small group of DJs\, all the more impressive for a Palestinian DJ who was virtually unknown outside the region when it first broadcast. \nThe set was a window into the rare electric energy of Arab techno parties; the energy of people living in the moment. Abdulhadi saw the same attitude in western audiences after lockdown ended. She said in a recent interview with The Face: “It’s always been like this in the Arab world. We don’t know what tomorrow holds so you feel this really intense energy from the crowd. I love how parties and festivals can disconnect you from reality. They can create this utopian bubble and just put you in a different world.” Abdulhadi leverages her status as an international touring DJ to support the growing number of musicians and creatives in Palestine in a number of ways. She has set up Union\, a collective in Ramallah that serves as a hub for DJs\, producers and creatives of all stripes to meet\, collaborate and hone their craft together whilst also advising them on the challenges they’ll face. In honour of the Boiler Room set hitting 10 million streams\, there was a re-sale of the highly-sought after Palestine t-shirt to raise money for the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center\, Palestine’s leading arts and culture non-profit organisation and a place very dear to Abdulhadi. \nHowever\, her efforts have not been without controversy. In 2020 during lockdown\, she was commissioned by online electronic music store Beatport to create a monthly music stream to promote the country’s heritage sites and emerging local talent. While recording her stream in a bazaar near a mosque\, she was illegally detained by Palestinian authorities on December 27 and spent eight nights in jail\, charged with “desecrating a holy site” despite having a permit from the Ministry of Tourism. Two days in detention\, a judge ruled to extend her punishment by fifteen days\, but she only remained in custody for six more days thanks to a Change.org petition that amassed over 101\,000 signatures from the international DJ community. Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and political activist Angela Davis were among the signatories. On New Year’s Day 2021\, while still incarcerated\, Abdulhadi released a Jane’s Addiction remix with a vocal sample from Jim Morrison. \nHer first full recording as Sama’ Abdulhadi came out in June 2021 on the new Circoloco label / compilation in partnership with Rockstar Games. She also collaborated with Rage Against The Machine legend Tom Morello\, a frequent advocate of DJ culture and solidarity with Palestine\, on his album The Atlas Underground Fire. She is now working on her debut EP slated for release early 2023. \nAbdulhadi’s focus continues to be on the Middle East and through Bring Back Beirut\, her fundraise initiative for a liquidity crisis-afflicted Lebanon\, she set up events in London\, Paris\, Berlin and her “second home” Beirut. As part of the initiative\, she released an eclectic NFT compilation of Lebanese artists through Bolero Music in May 2022. April 2023 saw Abdulhadi launch Resilience\, a global platform for artists and creatives to share their stories and artworks that depict experiences of marginalisation\, displacement and oppression. The platform aims to create a space for expression and advocacy\, where artists can tell their stories and amplify the voices of individuals and communities often ignored in mainstream narratives. With the funds from the Bring Back Beirut initiative\, the platform will be launched in Beirut with a free party over two consecutive nights (Abdulhadi bringing Richie Hawtin back to the city for the first time since 2017) to raise money for the beleaguered people of Lebanon. \nAbdulhadi now stands as one of the world’s most exciting DJs (and fearless cultural activists). She has played all over the world including Coachella\, Glastonbury\, Fusion\, Circoloco\, Lost Village\, Primavera and Belfast’s AVA festival\, Brazil’s Warung and Serbia’s Exit Festival legendary Dance Arena. Her close connection with Richie Hawtin has seen her tour extensively across South America and likewise her 2019 b2b with Lebanon’s Nicole Moudebar at IMS Dalt Vila In Ibiza holds huge significance. In London\, January 2023 saw Abdulhadi sell out the first 4 Friday’s with her own residency at Phonox nightclub. \nShe has also done her first BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix\, significant for Abdulhadi as the platform served as a source of huge inspiration for her whilst living in countries with no international guests.
