At the end of the workshop\, students will have a draft of at least one main character\, an outline for a fantasy world\, and a general understanding of how to play Dungeons & Dragons. Students\, will you answer the call and begin your quest? Treasures beyond your wildest imagination await… \nThis workshop will take place at our Mission Center Writing Lab (826 Valencia Street). To express interest in this workshop fill out the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/H8RnYXQv2TbLJ7PN7. \nAfter registering\, staff will reach out to offer a spot depending on eligibility and availability in the program. SUMMARY:SOMArts Cultural Center: Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power
DESCRIPTION:What is power? Who wields it? How can it be owned\, contested\, and exercised? For Asian women whose embodiment of power has culturally been limited to either Dragon Lady\, Lotus Blossom or Tiger Mom\, these questions are ever more prevalent. The true definition of power remains elusive and open to inquiry. \nCurated by Yeu Q Nguyen\, Jade Wave Rising: Portraits of Power celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander woman agency and resilience in a multitude of manifestations. Jade is a rare mineral imbued with different metaphysical and cultural meanings\, used since prehistoric times to adorn objects associated with power such as ceremonial daggers\, jewelry\, and crowns. Using jade as an allusion to more diverse definitions of power\, the exhibition pays homage to overlooked figures in our history and establishes new legacies of leadership for a more equitable future for AAPI women everywhere. \nPresented by Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) and the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) as part of their 26th annual United States of Asian America Festival: REIMAGINING HORIZONS \nCurator\nYeu Q Nguyen \nExhibiting Artists\nAnh Lee\nAJ Schnettler\nChoppy Oshiro\nIna Kaur\nIS/LAND Asian American Performance Collaborative\nJoanna L. SUMMARY:Verdi Club: SF Salon Music - Heels
DESCRIPTION:$65 – 120 \nThey say that to know a person’s journey\, you need to walk a mile in their shoes. At this salon\, we’ll learn about the stories of several dancers through the history of their shoes – from bare feet to pointe slippers to tango heels! \nThe program will start with a talk about the symbolism and feminism of shoes\, why women wear heels\, and how wearing heels changes and reflects the body – the look from outside the shoes and the feel from inside the shoes. Then\, join us for riveting dance performances from a group of trained dancers representing many different styles. You’ll walk away inspired\, and learn a bit more to tell your story with your own shoes. \nAs always with SF Salon Music\, expect the unexpected! You’ll leave with new knowledge\, new memories\, and perhaps even a new connection. Join us on April 30 at the Verdi Club in San Francisco for this once-in-a-lifetime performance.

SUMMARY:18 Reasons: Pate a Choux Primer - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$165.00\nMember Price:\n$155.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class. Alongside the tasting of baked goods\, a seasonal salad will be served with wine or beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nOne magic dough can create a delicious appetizer\, a main course\, and a dessert. Can’t believe it? Join us for a class celebrating the versatility of the iconic pastry known as Pâte à Choux! \nFirst\, you’ll make gougères. These light-as-air gruyere cheese puffs are the perfect canvas for savory fillings (or solo snacking). Make them ahead of time and you’ll have a delicious appetizer at the ready. For the main course\, you’ll make Parisienne gnocchi. They’re like their Italian counterparts\, except these cheesy herbed dumplings use pâte à choux dough instead of potatoes to make little pillows of deliciousness. You’ll serve the dumplings with brown butter and even more cheese. Finally\, we’ll work together to make a towering dessert that intimidates many a home baker: the croquembouche. French for “crunch in the mouth\,” a croquembouche is a cone-shaped tower of cream puffs (aka profiteroles) bound together by caramel. \nAdd this dynamo of a dough to your repertoire with this essential recipe! \nMENU \nGougères \nGnocchi à la Parisienne with Brown Butter and Sage \nCroquembouche—Vanilla Custard Cream Puffs with Caramel \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: Egg\, Dairy\, Wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nJennifer Altman began her culinary journey at age eight\, baking and cooking for her family and friends. After a career in science\, she followed her passion to become a pastry chef. She loves anything to do with food—cooking\, gardening\, recipe development\, and especially teaching. In a nod to many of her students’ baking anxieties\, Jennifer demystifies the process by teaching baking fundamentals\, allowing her students to return home with the confidence to create their own masterpieces. Jennifer’s specialties include baking and desserts.

SUMMARY:Manny’s: The Return: Mayor Willie Brown + Will Durst LIVE at Manny's!
DESCRIPTION:The Will & Willie Show returns to Manny’s just in time to commemorate May Day! \nYou won’t want to miss the lively back and forth between Mayor Brown and Will Durst as they talk about everything that’s happened since they got together to mark the second anniversary of the Insurrection. Hard to believe but since that event\, we now have a feisty California Senate race and another presidential first (indicted!) to talk about. And… we still have birthdays to celebrate. THERE WILL BE CAKE! \nWildly insightful and entertaining\, the award-winning Will & Willie Show is hosted by political icon Mayor Willie L. Brown\, Jr. and political satirist Will Durst. \nThe Will & Willie Show began as a morning radio talk show on 960 AM KQKE The Quake\, San Francisco in 2006. Since then it has continued as a periodic Podcast\, TV and Radio Talk Show from iconic venues in San Francisco serving as “Pop-up” studios. \nWill suffered a fairly severe stroke just before COVID. His recovery has been incredible but there’s still a ways to go so we’re returning with a live show to help with Will’s many medical expenses. \nTickets are $20 in advance and it will sell out so get yours today. All proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the Will Durst GoFundMe. \nTo donate directly to Will Durst’s GoFundMe\, click HERE \nThe Will & Willie show is a Flow Communications SF Production. Manny’s is honored to partner with them for this live event. \nThis show will be broadcast live and archived on the Will and Willie Youtube channel. \nWe would like to thank Chris Sweis\, CEO of Yellow Cab and his wonderful drivers for providing Will’s transportation to and from the Will & Willie Show. \nSpecial thanks to Emporio Rulli of Larkspur for providing the delicious birthday cakes for Will and Willie. \nAnd thank you to our sponsors Mona Lisa Mare e Monti\, and also Convivium Enoteca- both in Northbeach\, SF. \nThanks to all for your support. \nManny’s never turns away anyone for lack of funds. SUMMARY:18 Reasons: The Confident Cook: Tofu - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Price:\n$155.00\nMember Price:\n$145.00 \nA hands-on in-person cooking class culminating in a dinner served with wine and beer. This class is limited to 12 students. Review our registration and cancellation policies here. Masks are recommended. \nTake your culinary skills to the next level with our new fundamentals series\, The Confident Cook. It’s a Pick-Your-Own-Adventure\, where you decide which classes are most beneficial to you as a home cook. We guarantee that taking at least six classes will build your kitchen skills\, broaden your repertoire\, and give you the confidence to tackle any 18 Reasons class on the calendar. That’s why we’re offering you a deal – add six or more Confident Cook classes to your cart to take 15% off your total order! Cook along with Chef Mike and add a swagger to your seasoning\, a cool hand to your chef’s knife\, and a flair to your plated presentations. \nThe Confident Cook: Tofu: is an introduction to this wonderful and versatile ingredient. Three uses in this class as well\, as we only begin to explore the many applications of this culinary jack-of-all-trades. \nTo begin\, we will make a riff on classic Mapo Tofu. Chickpeas instead of pork\, but a soft\, simmering use of tofu\, sparked with ginger and garlic. We will have a great introduction to the world of Sichuan peppercorns\, as their numbing heat is essential in this dish. Plated with some rice our volunteers will whip up in the back\, and our first dish on the tofu tour. \nNext we will revisit Chef Mike’s first college days\, very early in San Diego with tofu fish tacos. No mahi in this version: we will dust pieces of firm\, marinated tofu in seaweed flavored flour\, then beer batter the tofu and deep fry it. Whip up some taco garnishes\, all vegetarian\, and assemble our “fish” tacos in a tofurrific application. \nFinally we will wrap up our tour with dessert\, with a pudding where our culinary All Star will go out in deep disguise. No one will know what makes our pudding so smooth and unctuous\, but we will all know its silky tofu at the base. It’s up to you whether you tell or not\, but we encourage you to celebrate tofu in all its incarnations. \nMENU \nMapo Tofu with Chickpeas \nDeep fried Tofu “Fish” Tacos\, Crunchy Slaw\, Guacamole\, and Vegan Crema; Vegetarian Refried Beans with Warm Salsa Topping \nChocolate Orange Tofu Mousse \nThis menu contains the following common soy\, wheat. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along\, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket. \nLet’s Cook Together! \nBorn in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco\, Mike Weller grew up in the suburbs of San Jose\, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors\, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops\, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds. He moved on to help open several restaurants\, attend the California Culinary Academy\, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later\, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies\, wineries and country clubs. When his son was born\, Mike transitioned his career into teaching\, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field\, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools\, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community. When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden\, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

Two dishes and many more techniques to keep you happy and full every night of the week. \nTo begin with we will learn to poach fish with a glorious piece of pristine white California halibut. Delicate and moist\, poaching is an ideal way to cook – but never overcook – tender fish. Then\, so that none of our flavor gets away\, we will reduce the poaching broth down into an old-school French butter sauce. Call by its actual name and charge more for it: a beurre blanc! Then we will learn the pilaf-method of rice cookery for perfect fluffy rice\, and glaze some colorful carrots in buttery goodness to wrap up our dish. \nThe secrets of crispy-skinned fish will center our second offering\, as we crisp up some local and sustainable rock cod. Served over a warm lentil salad so we can explore the tiniest dried legume\, and sauced with a mustardy vinaigrette just to prove that vinaigrettes are for far more than salads. \nMENU \nPoached Halibut\, Rice Pilaf\, Glazed Carrots\, Beurre Blanc \nCrispy Skin Local Rockcod\, Lentil Salad\, Mustard Vinaigrette \nThis menu contains the following common allergens: fish\, dairy. DESCRIPTION:Within Sadie Barnette’s The New Eagle Creek Saloon\, join us for a hybrid performance\, lecture\, and dance party led by artist-scholar and DJ madison moore. \n “TRAXXX is an invitation for you to come and catch the beat. Black queer dance floors have always served something else — a vibrant and vibrating antidote to the here and now. The most important clubs in Black queer nightlife history\, from The Warehouse in Chicago to Paradise Garage in New York\, were known for serving ovah beats\, guiding clubbers eager to ride waveforms to other dimensions. What do these frequencies of Black queerness make possible?” \n — madison moore \nDrinks will be available for purchase at the bar. Please note\, the bar is cash only. There is no ATM on site.\nAccessibility Information \nSeating is available at this event. For any other accommodations\, please email publicengagement@sfmoma.org 10 days prior to the event\, and we will do our best to fulfill your request.\nAbout madison moore \nmadison moore is an artist-scholar\, DJ\, and assistant professor of Critical Studies in the USC Roski School of Art and Design. His research is broadly invested in the aesthetic\, sonic\, and spatial strategies queer and trans people of color use to thrive in the face of rolling catastrophe. His first book\, Fabulous: The Rise of the Beautiful Eccentric (Yale University Press\, 2018)\, offers a cultural analysis of fabulousness as a practice of resistance. He is currently writing a new book called How to Go Clubbing that offers a journey through the iridescence of queer nightlife.
